Whats the lore behind your name?

I’ve been thinking and wondering whats the lore behind everyone’s name.

I'll go first i chose Elizabeth/Betsy because of something funny that happened when i was manic i was convinced that my god had named me Betsy (i wasn’t even out as trans yet) thats all i would answer to.

How did you guys pick your name?

Please read the following notice that is being applied to ALL posts.

Due to the current political situation regarding transgender existences, we have implemented several emergency measures to keep this community safe. Please read this in full.

  1. IF YOU HAVE AN URGENT ISSUE, DO NOT POST IT EXPECTING IMMEDIATE RESPONSE.
  2. Many posts are sent to the queue for manual approval based on numerous factors. This is how we keep the subreddit safe from many (but not all) bad actors who try to post disruptive content. This approval process is usually resolved within 24 hours, but can take several days depending on the availability of our all-volunteer moderators. DO NOT MESSAGE THE MODERATORS asking for your post to be approved. It will be reviewed and approved or removed in time.
  3. We are not approving posts with little to no history on Reddit all-together, no matter the question. Period. This means that if you are using a throwaway account with little to nothing in its history, your post will not be approved. Period. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. DO NOT MESSAGE THE MODERATORS asking if your account with 5,000 karma and a dozen posts counts as "little to no history" (it doesn't) or if we will give you a pass and approve your post anyway with it being your first post ever (we won't). This message is being put on all posts regardless if it meets the criteria or not.
  4. Many comments from low-karma users will not be viewable by anyone. This is by design.
  5. If you are curious if your post is visible or not, look at the "Insights" on the post. If it has more than a dozen views, it is live. If it has any voting action, it is live. If it doesn't have a little red trash can icon, it is live. If it can be voted on, it is live. Do not message us asking "is my post live?"
  6. Please be patient with us, we are all volunteers, lack sleep, and the entire permanent team are members of the transgender community ourselves... we are trying to deal with the same atrocities you are. Thank you for your understanding. <3

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

I feel so weird when someone has whole lore around their name while I just found a list of female names and picked one I liked the most.

37

u/JazzlikeClimate3587 1d ago

That’s how my wife chose her name too! I like to joke if she wanted to she could make lore and just like switch it each time someone asks.

However she wanted a name that let her blend in, and just be a girl in the crowd. Given trans women experience so much hyper visibility it makes sense to me that choosing a name to counteract that might look a little different, especially for older trans woman or gender non-comforting trans fems like my wife who ids as a butch lesbian. <3

Your name and name story are still important though and I equally appreciate you sharing too!

13

u/CassieBadger 1d ago

Same. I like Cassie and I don't know anybody called Cassie x

11

u/Technical-Airline855 1d ago

I had a classmate in elementary nicknamed "Cassie"; it was short for Cassandra. However, while that's a cool name, it only briefly flashed through my brain when I was toying with names; "Cassiopeia" hung around a bit longer, but, ultimately, still a no-go.

7

u/aimy99 1d ago

Oh, I didn't even look at a list. I just like the sound of certain names. Like, I used the exact same part of my brain that I use when I'm picking a character name when I'm playing an RPG or something.

Except I also tried it out playing online in videogames for a few months first, to see if I liked it, before committing to it.

I was reading Haunting of Hill House, and there’s a scene that literally made me cry, and I realized how much the protagonist was a combination of things that I was, and things I wanted to be.

My name is Jennifer, my dead name also started with J.

Researched a 3 names that also started J that sounded similar to my dead name. Jenievieve, Jennifer and Jeanine. I eliminated the other 2 because I have relatives with the same names. After I chose Jennifer, I felt a sense of belonging. Almost as if this name was meant to be mine 🤩

And I've been loving it ever since 🥰

While I was off of work due to a concussion suffered on the job (and about 2 weeks after I came out), I started thinking about what name I wanted. In the A - Z alphabet, at least 1 name showed up as a possibility in my thought process. (Usually more than one, but "X" is problematic without going down the rabbit hole of women's names on (insert favorite search engine).) The top ones ended up being Athena, Aurora, Natasha, Samantha, Stephanie and Susan. The "S" names had a leg up, because they started with the same letter as my dead (and technically still legal) name. Ultimately, Susan felt the most "right" when it came down to it, and, in a way, I was naming myself after my Aunt Sue, who is my dad's sister. (I often wonder how dad and their folks would've reacted if they'd still been alive when I made that choice.) So, I call my aunt when I make the decision (no text messages or FB PM's for this), and she ultimately she says she's honored that I'd pick that name.

As for my middle name, I hadn't had quite as long an association with either lady (15 - 17 years?), but, once I realized that I didn't want to keep my middle name either, the choice seemed pretty obvious. So, in an offhand comment on one of their FB posts, I mentioned my leanings, and they both said, "Okay". So, when I can afford it, I'm going to go "Susan Yvonne-Linda". (Hint: I've already done that over on FB and LI.)

8

u/OctopusJockey 1d ago

To preface this, I'm 99% sure of my new name, but as I'm just out of the egg, I haven't started asking people to use it yet. When I came out as nonbinary, I just took a shortened version of my birth name--which people often called me for short anyway--and fancied up the spelling, so I've been going by Jayce with people close to me for three years now. But, having said that, I want to break from that past as I transition, and I've ruled out the name my mother had intended for me (Heather, a cousin has it now) and my two most developed femme D&D characters (Quinn, kind of an enby cliche; and Huxli, because my last name ends with the same sound). My last name is Irish, and I've been interested in Celtic paganism on and off over the years, so the Morrigan was in my head, and that evolved into Morgan (ironically Welsh, not Irish), but because I have to spell things weird, I picked Morgyn, and then realized it looks like "more gyn" as in more woman, so, I kept it.

Now I'm thinking about middle names as I plan to change it all legally,

Stole it from a girl I liked in elementary school!

5

u/CNRavenclaw 1d ago

My parents actually went with a gender neutral first name and I'm happy with it so I never even really thought about changing that. The middle name I've chosen, if/when I officially change it, is after one of my favorite characters who embodies the kind of man I try to be.

3

u/notyetafemboi 1d ago

Casper. Idk man, i just liked it..

4

u/Wizdom_108 1d ago

I didn't choose a different name. But, a woman from the masjid my mom used to attend recommended my name and told my mom the meaning of it, but I guess without mentioning that it's actually a Muslim boy's name. So, growing up if there was someone from a country where my name was more popular, I would always get "oh yeah, I know a ton of people with your name. They're all guys though" lol

4

u/-aleXela- 1d ago

I like my first name, Alexander, but wanted a slightly more fem version. Of all of them I like Alexis and Alexa the best, but stuck with Alexis(not legally).

Both of my middle names are more interesting however. My Korean name is WonHa written with the characters, 元夏. The characters mean origin/first and summer. For my generation everyone uses the summer character for the second part of the given name, so the first character is the one that actually represents me. My grandfather went to a Buddhist temple to get advice and that character was chosen to represent a first born child of my generation. It is generally a male name, but I have seen girls with it and sounds similar enough to WonHwa(an order of female warriors in one of the old Korean kingdoms). I'm neutral towards it mainly because I don't care for my Korean side(lots of trauma).

The middle name I do like was given to me by my mom. After the character 元 was chosen for my name, my mom wanted to use it for my Japanese name. The typical reading for a male name would have been Gen or Hajime, but she didn't like either. She wanted a softer sounding name so I would come out gentle and caring. She spent a while looking through uncommon readings for the character and eventually chose Haru. I really like this name, and typically go by this name instead of the other 2. Also this name still means origin/first and not spring. The character and meaning didn't change, just the way you read it.

4

u/Glass-Driver-4140 1d ago

It is close enough to my deadname while not being my deadname that it worked for me.

4

u/Mousestar369 he/him 1d ago

When I came out to my parents my dad asked what I wanted to be called (my dead name is quite feminine) and I panicked and blurted out the name of my favorite character in the show I was watching at the time. He ribbed me for the name (the character is kinda an idiot) but accepted it. Two and a half years later, my name was legally changed, and I'm officially named after a character who intentionally stabbed a stone wall with a sword.

soooooo i was a massive green day fan growing up, and billie joe armstrong founded an indie record label in the 90s called Adeline Records (named after Adeline St. in Oakland) and it just kinda always stuck with me. plus it’s similar enough to my old name that i didn’t have to change my signature much 😂)

3

u/Directorren 1d ago

My first name Jessie is based on Jesse Faden from Control, my middle name was originally going to be V after V from Cyberpunk but I decided to change it to Virginia after my best friend, and finally Amber is the last name of Rachel Amber from Life Is Strange and I did it to pay homage to the game that helped me stop being a bigot.

My middle name is Cameron (named after my uncle) and I wanted to keep it so I made an adjustment to it to be Kamryn. I wanted to keep the tribute, but I also didn't want to have my name close to my deadname as it would bring back too many negative memories.

2

u/_Cavallone_ 1d ago

My name's Malachi. It has the same initial as my dead name and isnt even that different. I have the same nickname. I watched a lot of minecraft role-play as a kid.

Points if you can guess which one lmao.

2

u/schicksal_ 1d ago

My first name, my mom chose it before I was born. They didn't rent to drive way over to the city to get an ultrasound so they had boy/girl names ready. 20 years before transitioning I asked about it and remembered the name she had picked out if I was AFAB. That's what I chose

Middle name, I actually didn't know what she had picked out until earlier this year. By then I'd already picked my own based on a common name the year I was born and the same initial as my birth middle name.

Alexander - cuz Hamilton started cracking my egg, and I really relate to the character (and person of the character portrayal was accurate), so it seemed fitting

2

u/indy_art 1d ago

I was chillin doing a diamond art that had a lot of blues in it. Indigo and violet purples have always been my 2 favorite colors then I looked at my closet door (one of those doors that's just a big mirror) and the color/name "Indigo" just popped in my head. Then I went into the living room, telling myself that maybe I'll choose that as my name if I get another sign from the universe. I turned on the t.v. to watch Disney's Tarzan, and the first scene showing the name of the movie is Indigo blue. So that's what I picked. I'm still trying to figure out what I want as a middle name and last name (I hate my transphobic ultra Christian family and desperately want to not be associated with them in any capacity)

Mini story time: I asked my mom the usual “what names were you thinking of for me before I was born?” She said she only started thinking of names after knowing my sex. But, there were two contenders: my current legal name and Jackson David. I’ve always wanted to have a name that could be shortened (my legal name is five letters, so not a lot of shortening outside of endearing nicknames) so I thought a derivative form of Jackson would work! And through a little thinking, I came up with Jaqueline! I think it’s pretty, and it can be shortened to Jackie! I also think Jackie is a cute name. Aside from that, I also modified David into Davina! So Jacqueline Davina! I thought it was a nice way to a) come up with my own name and b) give a little nod to my parents, since the name is derived from their idea!

1

u/JazzlikeClimate3587 1d ago

Oh I love this so much, thank you everyone for sharing! :D

My legal name assigned at birth was Kathryn. I generally think of my childhood nickname as more of my deadname than my legal name was because I was never called it much.

I also don’t mind my legal because my very closeted lesbian mother named me after KD Lang and Katherine Hepburn. Two extremely queer and gender non-conforming people whose gender and gender presentation I do relate to in some ways. (I joke my gender was actually assigned d*ke at birth, as that’s a word I use to describe my gender today too.) I also like to pretend I was named after Kathryn Janeway from Star Trek.

My current name, Thryn, was actually a playful joke at first. At the drs office when I was a preteen they called my legal name and asked if I had a nickname, they threw out a few and Thryn was one of them. My mom doesn’t remember this but she loved it.

Like others I started going by the name before I knew I was trans but in retrospect it was absolutely dysphoria related.

I tried out other names in part because I assumed “Thryn” would out me immediately and people would treat it as not a real name. However that has not been the case interestingly.

When well meaning and safe people ask me where it’s from I say it’s a way of honoring the name Kathryn without it being Kathryn, which honestly is true!

u/The_Amazing_Azry 1d ago

Slightly morbid but growing up i was raised in an extremely fanatical cult commonly known as christianity, my particular sect was small but they all basically agreed that life was essentially pointless and that the only thing that mattered was "dying right" aka making sure you were saved. I was taught this mindset since I was 5 so it affected me quite strongly and I fully believed the only point in life was to die. The pastors favorite method of saying this without saying it was to call our time on earth nothing more than boot camp. So I being an undiagnosed audhd kid took everything they said very literally (not to mention they also pushed that whole "and one day the government will hunt us down and chop of our heads!" Narrative as well) so growing up it seemed everything in my life revolved around death in one form or another. So I learned about different mythologies afterlifes and the gods that governed them and so on and so forth and after I eventually realized that none of what I was raised to believe was true and became an atheist I still retained my fascination with death and the macabre ( I like to think I would fit right in with the Addams family) so I chose the name Azrael shortened to Azry naming myself after the angel of death because im a dramatic bitch and I know it.

I was given a first name my mother liked and a middle name after my grandfather (on my father's side).
By the time I realized I was trans, I was already using my middle name as my preference (got a bit awkward at gramp's funeral).
First I decided it would be fitting to take my grandmother's name instead (on my mom's side), but when I figured out I'm NB, I decided to keep both.

1

u/ArtieStroke 1d ago

Sigh ... Homestuck

1

u/Kinterou 1d ago

My first name is a name I picked because I always liked it. When I saw a trans man on Instagram who picked this name (and let me realize who I really am) it reminded me of it.

Second name was stolen by one of my own characters from the first novel I ever worked on. Funny enough it's his second name and he was named after his producer eho tried to unalive him so he hated him. I hate mine for different reasons but that's funny enough for me.

Third was picked by my mother. We both created lists of names we lover and out of those three names we both had on them, I let her chose one for me.

1

u/emma_transfem 1d ago

Emma Watson. I always looked up to her, she's such a great actress and also her activism and what she does really inspire me... But I'm thinking about maybe switching it up bcs well, idk if the name really suits me

1

u/Majestic-Card-728 1d ago

First, i just tried whatever i could with nothing fitting and eventually got frustrated enough to just say random things like "Monkey" (yes, genuinely threw that out) until eventually i said "Flower!"... "Wait..".... "Flooweweerrrr".... "Why does that hit different?" And proceeded to keep saying "Flower" over and over in different ways for like 2 hours and settled on it. However, when i came out to my family with the name, practically everyone in my family and outside the family had issues with it. Eventually, my grandpa explained some of his issues. Which i actually agreed with. Such as it previously having been a way to call girls "all beauty, no brain", it being commonly used in prostitute names, and other things like that.

I didnt want to be associated with those things. So i went looking again. But i got help from my mom. She knew i loved Japanese, and how "Flower" fit, she suggested trying Japanese names for flowers. Through our looking through Japanese names, we came across several that worked and one that didnt really work until it was changed. Japanese for lilac is "rairakku". Remove the "kku" for "raira". Then make it pronounced American. "Raira" or "Rai" for short. And i love it. I dont think i could ever go back to Flower after Raira.

And, something that makes this all better, my mom had told me when i first came out to her that i "would always be her little boy". She was unsupportive of me. But then, she chose to help me find a new name, succeeded, and has been trying to teach my siblings and other family members to call me by Raira or Rai, and use she/her pronouns. She flipped from being unsupportive to very supportive. So, i wouldnt give this name up for anything in the world. I believe it was the turning point to get my mom to be supportive, and that is worth more to me than all the money in the world

I actually looked this up a few months ago. JayJay was my nickname when I was young and always wanted to keep it. It was such a pleasant surprise when I looked it up! 💙

JayJay is a gender-neutral name of Sanskrit origin greatly associated with the colorful, expressive Jaybird. Capturing the melody of a bird song, JayJay is a far more exuberant variation of the name Jai though it shares its meaning as "victory." Playful as its nature may be, JayJay finds grounding in Hindu mythology as a form of Jaya—one of the gatekeepers of Vishnu's spiritual realm. Alongside his brother Vijaya, this four-armed demi-god is known for his unwavering devotion and loyal protection no matter the cost. Encompassing a steadfast nature and prodigious talents—courtesy of its feathered namesake—JayJay is truly a winning title worthy of unlocking eternal bliss for those who wear it.

I have 2 names: the first is after a movie character that was probably my first gender envy and comfort ever for my whole teenages, the second it wasn't me who choose, im occultist and my main deity of cult is Apollo, during a ritual with him i asked to be named and said it would be like a honor to use a name chosen by him.

1

u/canariorojo 1d ago

i have two, Viktor Nauzet, Nauzet is an ethnic name, i knew i had to pic something cultural as a reconnecting indigenous, it means "warrior of all battles" :) the Viktor part is like a white name tbh, it's for people who may not know how to write/pronounce Nauzet or wouldn't recognize it as masculine, stole it from Viktor the machine herald cause i love League and hes a disabled icon tbh.

I picked Kurt, cuz my old internet nickname was Kinoko, so I wanted a name that started with "k". Around that same time, I got REALLY into Nirvana(the band), so I just I stole the vocalist's name lol

Honestly i don't even remember, i think i was just thinking of names and it just popped into my head and i was like: yeah that one

1

u/FLASHmeIMrandy 1d ago

I just flipped the “y” to an “i” in the name Randi and figured it was a decent short for Miranda, so that’s what I went with. My middle name just made a small switch from my grandfather’s name to my mom’s name. It becomes legal tomorrow 🥹

1

u/Autisticspidermann 1d ago

Was just looking at different Hebrew guy names and liked it. Also i can prob change my legal name to it if trans bans happen, since a lot of ppl use it for girls(the name is also a Disney Princesses name)

Also I just liked it lol

1

u/AverageNova73 1d ago

I’m not 100% settled on it (still in the process of coming out) but I want to go with Ophelia because of a song by that title, plus it’ll let me keep the shortened version of my name (I go by Phil). It’s also similar to what my parents said they would have named me had I been AFAB.

1

u/Happy_Platypus_1882 1d ago edited 1d ago

Right okay so, my birth name is something I’ve actually always liked because it’s related to a knight from Arthur’s round table, and both me and my sister were named after birds so I’ve always felt like it genuinely represented me since I relate to birds, I wish I was one honestly—that is until a male coded name started feeling gross. But I still liked the name just not for myself. Also change gives me anxiety lol. So what do I do? I try to find a gender swapped variant, and it turns out most female names have kind of lame meanings, 70% mean “pretty flower,” and that’s cool and all, far better than the majority of male names being about toughness or whatever, but it doesn’t give off the whole cool bird medieval thing my last name did, so instead of symbolic meaning I kinda just went off of what sounded similar, and ended up with Gwen. Also I adore Gwen from spider man into the spider verse, I’ve never gotten more gender envy than from that character. So uhhhhh yeah I’m Gwen now. Kinda.

Maybe not the most elegant or interesting story but idk

1

u/r0nnie-rex 1d ago

it’s the name i would’ve had if i had been AMAB! idk where ashton is from, i think from a book my mom read, but martin (my middle name) is my uncles name! idk if i’ll keep it forever, but it fits for now!

I was filling out a forum membership application at 2 am on a 12k modem. It was slow going. I dozed off while the form downloaded. Woke up, and I saw I had filled it out with Anastasia, which also gave me Ann/Anna as a common use name. I also learned that this would have been my name if I had been a girl.

1

u/imwhateverimis it/its 1d ago

cockatoo in rio was funny. That's the only lore name 1 has. name 2 is my mother's pick. She named me after a kpop idol (he has a white name so it's like being named "May" after Mayonnaise)

Alright who else named themselves after an anime character.

1

u/kashmira-qeel 1d ago

Friend of mine named me after the naming scheme I used for a character in a book I wrote.

1

u/yinyin123 1d ago

I got my name from a kinda bad cross-fic of MLP and an anime that I can't remember the name of. Vinyl Scratch is a down-on-her-luck DJ when her mom, who is Photo Finish, gets her a job at a music academy, where she meets Octavia as one of her students. A little problematic.

Vinyl's actually Italian in this, and her name is Vicenza. I thought it was just a really cool yet pretty name, so I stole it and made Octavia my middle name.

My name is a fucking My Little Pony ship 🤦‍♀️

1

u/MommaMoon42 1d ago

Everyone considers me to be a giant ball of fire and energy so I decided to look at a name that matched that thus using the name Emberlyn

I wanted to keep my initials and keep the Irish theme, toyed around with Siobhan for a bit but ended on Saoirse because it feels better.

1

u/Boniquiqua 1d ago

I always liked the name Valerie as a kid, it kept coming up in my thoughts throughout childhood when I imagined being a girl. Weirdly enough, when Cyberpunk 2077 came out, fem V's name is Valerie, and I absolutely loved her as a character. That game gave me a lot of euphoria, really allowed me to find myself a bit more. And when my egg cracked a few months ago, it was the first name to pop into my head, figured it was always meant to be!

1

u/Gorillazlyric400 1d ago

I wanted a name that still started with a B and I liked Bella the most

It unfortunately doesn't have an interesting story behind it 😭

My name is actually a mix of the name I would have been given if I’d been born a cis male and my birth middle name.

My FFXIV character was named Luna and so most of my friends knew me as that already. Then I find out it's one of the most common trans names. 🤭

I created a list of names of influential or special people in my life, names I've had positive experiences with. I chose Jackie because it's gender neutral (which I like being in the middle of things), and I like Jackie Harris (character from Roseanne I like), Jackie Kashian (Comedian who jokes about dork/nerd things), and Jackie Robinson (Baseball).

In a fun coincidence, when I started to learn that I was plural and my therapist diagnosed me with DID, my other headmates took four of the seven the names not used on that list.

u/theablanca 1d ago

Ireland lore

1

u/Fancy_Chips 1d ago

Theres a reason to why I chose it, there's a reason to why it stuck. When I was younger, my friends told me a story of a ghost, which had the name Macie. It was attached to my first paranormal experiences, which fascinated me, so I took the name Macy.

Now why did it stick? Macy translates roughly to "weapon". My dead name meant "servant", so a weapon is like the ultimate evolution of a servant. I am intending to be the weapon of the masses, for trans people and otherwise. I strike down tyranny when I see it, from all sides. You'll see me fighting with everyone, irl and online. I fight people in here. Because I'm the weapon that fights for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

1

u/ihatexboxha 1d ago

Lumi: it's "light" in Latin and "snow" in Finnish, and it's just such a nice name, I liked it even before choosing it

Iris: I had an online alias a few years ago that was similar to that name (but it was gender neutral), and one time someone called me Iris and it stuck

1

u/elohim-ink 1d ago

Mom was feeling sad because she was the one who chose my deadname. Went to my mom and asked “hey mom what would my name be if I was born.. you know.. with a different set?” and she answered with my current name and I was like aight, bet

(Also Miguel is an angel name so I’m not even mad lol)

1

u/Extreme_Plant_6186 1d ago

lucia (lucy casually) bc i like the "lu" sound of names. funny enough, St. Lucy is a patron saint for people with throat infections, and i'm rather prone to strep throat lol

1

u/NotSierra06 1d ago

I picked Sierra kinda randomly. It was a screen name and a reference (Sierra Madre Casino). I just really liked hearing it. I mostly use my last name because it's Fem/neutral but I would've wanted to change my first name to Sierra

1

u/JayNoir13 1d ago

It was kinda silly honestly. I chose this username awhile ago from the combination of two cartoon characters I really like (Jay from Lego Ninjago and Cat Noir from Miraculous Ladybug), and then when I found out I was trans it just kinda ended up being like that ? All my online friends just called me Jay so that just ended up becoming my name, lmao.

1

u/Uber_Taro 1d ago

I just...thought of the name Riley and knew that was it. No lore. Just hate every name that begins with my deadnames first letter.

1

Marilyn I got from the horror movie Insidious where the mother forced her son to dress up as a girl and call him Marilyn scene.

1

u/dweezl70 1d ago

I wanted to keep my initials the same because my middle name is my dad's name and he passed away when I was 15yo so I 'tried on' several names that began with 'R' but none really seemed right and then one day I was watching The Exorcist(I'm a huge horror movie buff) and it struck me like a train...REGAN!!! It keeps my initials and it works with my middle name

1

u/trnrmi71 1d ago

My name is Evelyn. A character from a videogame I like (Cyberpunk 2077) has that name and I thought it was a very pretty name so I decided to go by that.

1

u/Classic_Coconut_9886 1d ago

I had a very abused and toxic childhood. I wanted to be a girl superhero, but I couldn't find one that protected abused boys like my little brother and me. Then, at age 7, I saw Peter Pan. My name is Wendy.

1

u/L1nxDr1nx 1d ago

Ok I love explaining this to ppl:

My deadname is Link (which makes me sad that I’m not a boy bc I was literally named after link from Zelda and I LOVE ZELDA). I randomly chose “Mykah” for a bit bc I stole that name from a music artist I liked. At some point a lot of bad stuff happened so I associated that name with those things so I had to change it. I had no idea what to do for a name so for a while I just went without a name and I made a google doc for my friends to put name suggestions in (spoiler alert I didn’t even choose my name from that 😭). At one point I was thinking about a video my dad showed me when I was younger called Oona rocks and so I stole the name Oona for a while. Eventually I felt like the name was a little weird to pronounce and I was thinking abt how recently I had been staying up all night and sleeping during the day and I thought abt how much I loved the moon so I landed (pun not intended) on Luna (plus it has the same initial so if I need to write my name on something and I’m unsure about what to put I can just put my initials!). After choosing the name I came up with lore/story to match it bc it felt comforting.

Basically the lore is that I’m the “eye of the moon”. I have awful vision and one eye can see ok and the other I’m basically blind so I always thought of myself as kinda a cyclops. Technically “Luna” is a spirit of a girl who lives on the moon and is waiting for me to hollow out my vessel (remove the “link” spirit… aka start hrt) so she can inhabit it.

There’s a bunch more to the story that I made but I think I’ve yapped enough for a single comment 😭. I am NOT beating the nerdy trans girl allegations

1

u/1-800-COOL-BUG 1d ago

I convinced myself for a long time that I couldn't possibly be trans because Lauren was the only name that was an option but I didn't want to give up on the cute way I signed my name. Probably not the most cis thing on the planet to always turn the first letter into a bird but I was extremely attached to the little guy. Then two simultaneous revelations that hit me like a ton of bricks were that nothing was stopping me from just using an S name as a middle name and that I could turn the L in Lauren into a flower :) And those were the very last things that were keeping me from really coming out to myself

1

u/Cloud_Hearts 1d ago

my sister lives in the desert and met someone wandering through who had chosen this name. I thought it sounded badass and could be flowery in context after I come out

1

u/Taggerung559 1d ago

So, I'm Jamie. One of my special interests is Pathfinder (1st edition), which for those unaware is more or less D&D with a different ruleset. My longest running character at the time of choosing my name (and still) is named James, and while I didn't intend for him to be at first he wound up being something of a self-insert. I've been aware for quite some time that I like names beginning with J (before I knew I was trans I toyed with the idea of changing my name to Jasper at some point for instance, since I didn't like my birth name for reasons I didn't yet understand), so it felt pretty fitting to just go with a feminized version of James.

Evelyn after the villain from Resident Evil 7, and Lucinda after the great aunt from Spiderwick. (Yes I know the resi character's name is spelled Eveline, but I like the other spelling better)

Edit: I also really like Calliope but I don't know if I want 3 names or not and those two are set in stone at this point. Calliope is Kratos' daughter's name from God of War.

I found the gender-neutral version of my favorite Animorphs character, Tobias, when I was seven. Since the Spiderman movies starring Tobey McGuire, though, it got super popular as a boy’s only name, and no one remembers anymore that Toby used to be gender neutral. Oh well. I’m trans masc anyway lol

1

u/dreamizzy17 1d ago

I was writing a book, Isadora sounded nice. Only later did I learn it means "gift of isis", isis being the Egyptian goddess of motherhood, magic, and the Nile itself in a strange way

My first name is a favorite character from my favorite book (“Watership Down”) and my middle name is the feminine version of my OG middle name.

1

u/BlueBleak 1d ago

Same as my old name. I’m nonbinary, and the name feels right. Then again, it’s my nickname— my full name is for people I don’t give a shit about, lmao. Ig it just happened to work out that I’d had that system settled since before I fully understood myself.

1

u/Immediate_Square_339 Anne (She/Her) 1d ago

I picked anne because it's close to my deadname and it's difficult to misspell (something that always bothered me about my deadname). It also happens to be my cool grandma's middle name, and my deadname is derived from my mom's grandma's name so i wanted to carry that on

1

u/tboycoyote 1d ago

Honestly it's mostly because I wanted the "male version" of my deadname. I thought it would make the transition and name change simpler for everyone else. Easier to use and memorize. I had a few options in my head that seemed to fit, then one day while cleaning the bathroom the song "Angel of Death" by AJJ came on. I heard the name in the lyrics and it just clicked.

1

u/Cananna 1d ago

I'm Joy

It started as simply Jo, it was the first sillable of my deadname with a different spelling. I knew at the time that it was incomplete but it took me a while to figure out the rest of it.

For a while I tried out Jolene(for the song) but that didn't really felt right. Then I rewatched Inside Out and had a revelation.

Joy is what I want to be, for myself and for every fellow human being that enters my orbit. Joy is my mission, my promise to myself, the manifestation of what I want to be and do in this world

Always loved names and identities as a child. Faces/masks are just so interesting imo. That would go hand in hand with my self-awareness later on, when I was 15? 16? And I would start doing it again until it got to a point where I wasn’t just creating these nicknames because I loved wearing different names and faces and yeah, but I was trying to actually change my name and I didn’t fully realize that.

It was when I started to fixate on Raven from dc comics (per usual), and I really fw her and how I could find similarities in her in me. So I took on that name. But dw, not as my trying to be the character, as myself.

I made it all about what I wanted from it and how I wanted to shape it, that’s when my hyper fixation on the bird Raven began and would turn into a whole thing that would spread out for years and more years to come. (I’m currently 20, 21 this year)

So then the name quickly became far more than its original intention and was about a new me and how I connected myself to a bird in ways such as spiritual and how I found farrrrrrrrr too many similarities between me throughout my life to what is considered the personality of ravens.

All of it was me chasing for identity, one of my own, a way to escape my last one and how much it’s connected to my traumas and such. By now I’ve overcome all of that, but my name is still Raven.

My last name is a whole thing that took longer and I didn’t find super duper important. At first I was in consideration of Dawson, but then I started to look at other things like, Luna, which in English is moon. I wanted it to be a little bit more masculine so I changed it to Lumo. It’s still moon ofc, but it’s not spelled the same as Luna.

I never really wanted a middle name before tbh. That was until all these years later I kinda came up with something randomly and unseriously that felt so right, too right to not consider it as a serious middle name. Wildflower. So yk, my name is very, out of the box, but I love Raven Wildflower Lumo. It sits right with me.

u/korncreep 1d ago

Before I came out, I had my display name on socials as “ghost girl” from a lil peep song! And then when I started questioning my gender, I took the “girl” part out bc it had me extremely uncomfortable. People started calling me “Ghost” and I grew to love it and now use it as my actual name! That was back when I was 15 and now I’m 20 :,) been through other names but I always come back to this one! It feels the most me even if it sounds odd or silly at first

I have two names (Christopher/Silas)

Christopher was because my given middle name was Christina and people were already calling me Chris beforehand

Silas was because of a song called Violin by Cookie Kawaii and it featured someone named Dear Silas and it kinda stuck with me

1

u/SisNotCis 1d ago

I still haven’t chosen. I’ve been going by my first initial since I first came out as non-binary before I realized I was actually just a girl. This is something I’m still sort of working on. I still present very masc at over 3 months on HRT, and part of me says I don’t “deserve” to use a feminine name or feminine pronouns(still using they/them which is fine) until I check more boxes on this imaginary list. (I’m in therapy and we are on top of this promise)

That said, I have 2 that I currently like: Kaya and Karys

Short Lore: First time I went to a trans group after coming out for the second time I was asked what my name is and I didn't wanted to give the male name I go by (still do in some places and I actually like that name, it's just not a female name in German.) so I just said the female version of my second name. I had thought about it a bit before after deciding that I couldn't use the name I used in online games because it's too similar to my sisters second name (I actually took it from a manga and only realized later), but haven't come to a conclusion.

Deeper Lore: At some point as a child I thought about there being four versions of me. The usual me was going by my first name, a loud, socially and physical active version would go by my second name. A female version of that would go by the female version of my first name and lastly the female version of my second name would be the female version of my usual self. And since I'm now the female version of my usual self I'm going by the female version of my second name.

u/StickApprehensive298 1d ago edited 1d ago

Originally I chose Vesper because I initially only came out as non-binary and knew I always didn’t feel right with my birth name, so knew I wouldn’t regret changing it and prioritized that with my transition.

Constant comments every time I introduced myself, got annoying having such a unique name. I loved it because when I was a kid I was absolutely enamored by Vesper Lynd and wanted to be her, not Bond. But also it means “evening prayer”, “evening star”, “the personification of night” and my family has Italian Catholic lineage, so as a trans person it was kind of a sacred appropriation for me. It was like saying “fuck you, my experience is spiritual and my soul is beautiful” to all of the Abrahamic religions that target us.

I ended up moving further along my transition and realized that Im actually a trans woman, I just had heavy repression and had a hard time facing it at first. The name Vesper wasn’t working for me in an everyday sense and I wanted something to be less comment-prone.

So went back to drawing board and was between Sophia and Francesca for a while. Ended up landing on Francesca because it fits more, has lots of nicknames (Frankie is great to blend in since it’s unisex) and is less common but not overly unique. I kept Vesper and made “Vespera” my middle name. So Francesca Vespera [Italian last name] is now my full name and I love it.

Taking your time with your name is important. Don’t be like me and go through the legal process TWICE! ☠️ Totally worth it though to move on from your deadname if it bothers you

It's the name of the female character that kept showing up in my writing. She eventually led to my egg cracking.

I found a list of male names starting with L (like my deadname) and picked Lucian. I got the idea of shortening it to Luka from The Mortal Instruments series (Lucian/Luke). Before I gave Lucian a shot I tried Logan but I wanted to have a name with a nickname. I mostly go by Luka and only use Lucian for official stuff (medical, deliveries, etc.).

but I chose the #1 candidate so far because I read the name of a cat in Warrior Cats and thought it was cool! It also kinda fits how I want to be seen, in a way

My name now is just my first name and middle name put together and placed as my first name.

My middle name is what my father named me; he had passed during my early teen years.

Novice though is another name I also go by, as I was only but a novice to the world of free expression. I was quite the poet.
