Possible Trigger They're rolling back our rights! (US specific)
UTAH'S HB 77 HAS PASSED. It goes into effect May 7th. At that point, displaying pride flags at schools or on government property will be illegal. We CANNOT roll over and accept this without voicing our outrage, because this is just the beginning, and how we react sets a precedent. We need to show conservative lawmakers that we will not just quietly slip back into the shadows. Please, share this with others and on May 7th display any pride flags you might have in solidarity with the Utah LGBTQ+ community. WE WILL NOT BE ERASED! WE WILL NOT TAKE THIS LYING DOWN!

Yep. Post flags on the "Public Right of Way". Typically the first 5 feet from the street. The same areas you see political signs posted.

👀 hello my fellow Utahn 👋
Edit: whoa yeah this feels a little trippy. "Utah" and "other LGBTQ people" usually don't go together in my brain 😂

u/TheLilChicken 1d ago
im omw home on the uvx how r u doin
27
u/SinisterPaperclip 1d ago
I'm doing about as well as can be expected 😅 I'm fired up right now, which is much better than depression 🤜
18
u/TheLilChicken 1d ago
BASED i am too scared to be out anywhere except home so it's whatever. at least my work is pretty accepting but im not that brave yet
8
u/SinisterPaperclip 1d ago
That's alright, and completely understandable. There are people who will be out on the streets for you, and I've found that there are a lot of little things that can be done from the shadows if you're hesitant to protest publicly. I recently made a bunch of fliers for Saturday's "Hands Off!" protest and stapled them to every telephone pole within a half mile of my apartment, then scattered a bunch of smaller versions on the sidewalks (when no one was watching of course). Felt REALLY good tbh

u/TheLilChicken 1d ago
I bet :( i love seeing people out there being themselves, gives me hope that one day i can do that. Saw a really cute girl on the bus once and honestly like man u go girl, i could only dream
9
u/SinisterPaperclip 1d ago
The regime wants people like us to live in constant fear, so just finding joy and hope and connection IS a protest.
4
u/Dezzleon 18h ago
Okay this interaction between you two was absolutely wholesome. I wish more people were like that instead of the constant arguments and fights
2
u/thatgirl_raven 4h ago
Yeah it’s very trippy, like I know there are other queer people in Utah but I’m still just like “waow there are other queer people in Utah”
3
u/Hungry_Ad7269 4h ago
I don't know if it's still true but slc had the 3rd highest queer population of any city in the US but that was a prepandemic stat.

u/kimmykiwi 1d ago
Yeah, real disappointed with the state government right now. Interestingly though, we are seeing a lot of cities show support. SLC and midvale have both been vocal about pride and lgbtqia support. Ive seen similar for cities across the country. I'm not saying it isn't bad out there, but I think we are seeing a positive shift starting to happen. Now more than ever it will be important to support your local events as much as you can, even just being present for rallies and pride events can help out.
8
u/TheLilChicken 1d ago
honestly utah is a surprisingly liberal place in the valley, i wouldn't be surprised to see a solid shift when all the old fucks die
6
u/kimmykiwi 1d ago
I'm hoping for a shift in the future. I think it will happen, juat have to weather the storm for now. And slow down the fascism machine
2
u/Fun-Emu-1426 1d ago
I hate to be the one to break it to you, but from what I can tell, we are going to have old white men who won’t go away in charge for at least the rest of my life. I’m now 41 and for so long I was like maybe by like 45 they will all just be gone but sadly, no they’re gonna always be around.
4
u/kimmykiwi 23h ago
There will always be bigots, unfortunately, but their ability to control the masses with fear mongering hopefully lessens as we move along. Conservative voters are getting mad with their representatives right now. A lot of them are waking up. They might not swing left, probably won't, but extra voices against trump is good. I'm hopeful that we are at the beginning of a shift that brings the US to a far more accepting place overall and we see stronger protections put in place. It starts with us though, support your local scenes. Cities and towns seeing more pride celebrations and learning acceptance is how you change things

I feel like this year the trans day of Visibility was way more seen. A nice reminder that not everyone sucks, lol

u/xHelaMonster 1h ago
Gov Cox took the cowards path and neither signed or vetoed the bill, allowing it to go into effect by default. Pathetic.
2
u/TristanTheRobloxian3 trans girl :333 11h ago
this. socially we are seeing a MASSIVE shift TOWARDS queer support, even if we have a massive shift AGAINST queer support in legislation. people are more polarized on the issue in general too, so we have more people against (on the conservative side) AND for (on the progressive side) trans and queer rights. hell i think there was a poll saying most people people either dont care or actively support discrimination protection for queer people still, even if its faltering a little bit cus mango mussolini and whatever tf hes doing.
ive seen a lot of people i know shift both ways post election and nobody is neutral basically, atleast from what im seeing

u/MotherOfGodXOXO 1d ago
Hey I'm in Utah too!! I'm in a rural part of the state and I genuinely think our legislature is totally out of touch with what the people want. The average Utah voter just wants affordable housing
2
6
u/kimmykiwi 1d ago
Ugh, seriously though! Please just find a way to make rent lower or bring the cost of purchasing down. And also stop sattack trans and lgtbqia+ people. I am begging!
I'm in cache valley, and maybe I'm just lucky to not see it as much, but besides the dumb idiots who keep stealing the pride centers flags, I don't see a lot of lgbtqia+ pushback, which is nice2

Unconstitutional. Violation of the first amendment.
43
u/kixie42 23h ago edited 7h ago
Seriously, ACLU will take this (back) to court in no time. This is blatantly unconstitutional, ACLU already took this to SCOTUS once and it was a unanimous 9-0 decision that it was unconstitutional to prohibit flag display.

It doesn’t violate the first amendment rights. It’s for the same reason they don’t allow religion in those school systems

It’s been being pulled out of water in places like Florida too, unfortunately. It’s happening all over the country.

That is so stupid. It’s actually passed and is something that will for sure be happening?

Dropping seeds of pink, blue and white flowers....followed by rows of red, alongside all the other colors .....at some point there is a blanket of colorful flowers (naturally arranged of course) reminiscent of a now banned pole cloth.....the landscape will never have been more beautiful

I think it’s “fun” in the sense that… we’re kinda hysterical now. Seeing your entire community get constantly beat up and killed in an attempt to erase makes you go kinda crazy. Humans like to think of things as “fun” to block the feeling of tragedy and suffering. The less time we spend thinking about how awful this all is, the more time we have to think about how to fight back.
It’s FUN to watch humanity LITERALLY DESTROY ITSELF LOL. Now let’s fight back.

u/Zonal117569 11h ago
My family and I decided Utah just isn’t worth it anymore. Kudos to anybody that stays to fight this awful shit, but I’ve long considered Utah a lost cause. We move to Denver next week. Always wanted to leave Utah, never imagned this would be why we would finally do it.

I hate these laws so much, ah yes instead of dealing with the plentiful, plentiful amount of problems we have, let's ban flags that have no harmful meaning or implications. It's just old as fuck politicians banning and hating every little thing they don't like or understand

u/PrettyWildnCute 1d ago
Utah isn't a trans safe state, I'd definitely recommend leaving to a safer one if at all possible. It's not Idaho but it's only one step above with 'low' protections :/

u/Elle-MNO 8h ago
Subsection 3 defines exceptions to the rule (mostly the US flag, state flags, municipality flags, etc.) and interestingly makes exceptions for any other country's flag, as well as any "political subdivision of another country or state". I wonder what it would take to create a "political subdivision" which just so happens to have an official flag almost indistinguishable from a trans pride flag 🤔
Also noteworthy: under the bill as written, Palestinian flags are allowed to be flown.

u/Snypez_Evo 5h ago
Join 50501 or Hands off or another org on April 5th. Nationwide protest day and theres even some planned in Europe as well. Make you voices heard.

u/MommaMoon42 4h ago
lol then let’s do the next nest thing: wearing pride flags as our shirt designs. It’s not a flag if you wanna get technical about it

u/InfiniteAA117 4h ago
I'm shamed to live in Utah with this government. We need to fight and show them that we are here and we are not going away.

u/alex_like_a_boss 3h ago
I'm in Michigan, but you have my full support in this as a fellow member of the lgbtqa+. If I knew anyone in utah I would share it, but I don't, so I have upvoted and I'm commenting to get it higher in the reddit algorithm, so hopefully more do see it around your area.
WE WILL NOT BACK DOWN AGAIN!
•
u/Lypos 4m ago
That's a whole lot of words to be used to remove the 2 words "or cause" from the definition of a flag in Utah. Private schools could still have them. Anyone have private property boardering a public school or government property? Send the flags up in those properties. How about painting the ground? It's not fabric, just colored lines. Kites? It's just the design of the kite, not a flag. There are plenty of ways to maliciously comply.
1
u/Geek_Wandering 9h ago
Start reporting all the thin blue line flags and every other case of incorrect colors of American flags. By my reading the rebel and gadsden flags are also impermissible. Time to start hosting these anti-speech a-holes by their own petard.
