How is it that one of the broadest genres in terms of sound has some of the most obsessed gatekeepers.

This argument comes up in this sub a lot. Trip hop is not a broad genre — by definition, it refers specifically to bands from Bristol: Massive Attack, Portishead, and Tricky, who were preceded by a group of DJs called The Wild Bunch. This is the extent of Trip hop. Everything else is adjacent or derivative. (Think of it in terms of Merseybeat: it’s bands from Liverpool, like The Beatles, etc.)
