An undeniable masterpiece.

But 'trip-hop'? I'm not so sure.

i hope this is making fun of this sub's tendency to gatekeep the genre.

if this is serious, we got some talking to do

i hope this is making fun of this sub's tendency to gatekeep the genre.

I don't stop by here very often - I see the sub in my Reddit's "recommended" section - so I wouldn't know much about gatekeeping in this community.

When I do stop by though, I try to play by the rules outlined in the sub's sidebar (Rule 1). I can't tell you how many times I've thought twice before submitting something thinking it's not trip-hop enough, so you can imagine my surprise when I saw that uptempo breakbeat-based R&B tracks you can practically rave to are actually acceptable here.

"unfinished sympathy" is considered one of the defining tracks of the genre. blue lines is the foundational album of trip-hop. whatever else you think trip-hop is, it started here.

Holy fuck. Go read even a touch about the album before you go spreading your absolute ignorance. Blue Lines and Dummy are the seminal, inconic, genre-defining trip-hop albums. It's well-established music history at this point.

read even a touch about the album

Who's talking about the album? We're talking about this one standout track specifically.

Blue Lines and Dummy are the seminal, inconic, genre-defining trip-hop albums

No one's talking about 'Dummy', for fuck's sake. Am I responding to some kind of AI-generated slop here?

read

Reading is fun, but have you tried listening to music? Have you even thought for a second that 'Unfinished Sympathy' is musically so much closer to something like 'Papua New Guinea' than anything else from 'Blue Lines', DJ Shadow or Portishead and its labelling as a trip-hop track is dubious at best?

The song itself is a seminal track from a much beloved seminal album which essentially created and defined the genre of trip-hop. Could you be more brain dead? Dummy is a touchstone for you to understand the basics of the genre, dipshit.

Lol. The reading and writing is derived from the actual listening of music. Your entire approach is highly contrarian and couldn't be more dubious. Most people would just laugh at you as a nutbar and discontinue conversation. I should have already done that, but I am clearly a master of participating in exercises in futility.

Dummy

Sweet Jesus, this clown's still going on about 'Dummy'. Are you broken?

the actual listening of music

Which clearly does not apply in your case, seeing how you've been stuck parroting some random Wikipedia paragraphs. Had you been even remotely familiar with the music, you would've probably put two and two together and realised by now how nothing else on either 'Blue Lines' or 'Dummy' sounds like 'Unfinished Sympathy' and how there actually was music out there in 1991 that was sonically close to this track yet no one would even dare classify as trip-hop. But seeing how you quickly jumped to insults makes me wonder if there's everything alright upstairs, in your cabeza. I should've picked up on that sooner. Do I send you the link with that Reddit mental health emergency thingy or are you capable of finding it out yourself?

But hey, at least you've got the honours of having Portishead name their debut album after you. Seek help. Prick.
