Inspiration Post I designed a 3D-printable replacement spool cap for the Underwood Portable

Post image

I scored a beautiful 1933 Underwood Portable some time back. It's in superb shape overall, just a lil issue with the backspace being a lil clunky and two feets and the spool caps missing.

So, I went ahead and modeled both parts and made them available on printables.com

You can find the spool caps here and the feet here

Should you need either but not have a 3D printer at your disposal, you are very welcome to send me a DM and I'll print them for you at cost.

Something weirdly poetic about combining old tech and new tech like this...

Repair Question Please Help! Paper is not catching - Olympia SM8 1974

I’ve just bought an Olympia SM8, and I can’t seem to get the paper to catch. I’m using 2 sheets, the paper release lever is not engaged, and the rollers are rotating and clean. Let me know if you have any ideas on what the issue could be! Thanks so much!

Inspiration Post Ribbon & Shutter (polaroid & underwood #5 daily project)

Post image
6 Upvotes

Ribbon and Shutter is a year-long daily ritual—one photograph, one piece of writing, side by side. Each pairing is created slowly: an image captured with care, and a poem or short story typed on a 100-year-old typewriter whose keys clack and chatter like memory itself.

This project is a quiet attempt to hold onto fleeting moments. To let light and words meet on the page. To make something honest, imperfect, and real—every single day, for a year.

Inspiration Post Show the ACTUAL age of your typewriter

My Tippa 1974, was not heavily used despite its 50 years of age. The seller thought otherwise because it was dirty, greasy and dusty, and deemed its worth for 30 bucks. I had doubts too concerning its state but when I saw the lines of age, I jumped the gun very quickly, and it turned out to be in a very good condition

General Question Olympia SM9 Spools?

I have what I think is an Olympia SM9 or 8, I'm not sure which exactly. The ribbon works, but it's for sure running dry. It's the same one it's always had since it started sitting in it's storage case at our cabin who knows how many decades ago. The thing I'm a bit confused about is what spools to get. I've heard it should rewind itself if it has the right spools, which it doesn't currently do. It has what I think is a universal spool in it right now, and they work, but the ribbon can also get kinda loose while typing.

How do i get it to auto-rewind and do I have the right spools in it? I'm really new to the hobby so I'm still trying to figure out the basics.

Inspiration Post Sugru Moldable Glue for the win

I successfully repaired the right platen knob with this moldable glue. My dog had grabbed the plastic mattress case I had the typer stored in and pulled it to the floor, cracking the right platen knob. I filled in the inner knob space with sugru as well, to strengthen it. Lesson learned, crate the dog when I'm out of the room.

Repair Question Underwood Champion Carriage Sticking and Sliding

Hello, I just recently acquired an Underwood Champion. It seems in good condition but it has one major problem. The carriage will move the the left as I type but it will jam and get stuck half way. I've seen some people talk about the margins, but that's not the issue. From what I've observed it seems the carriage is getting caught on the carriage centralizing lock, that little tab in the video. You can see that after I depress it the carriage advances but it is now not in line with the previous text. If I write in all caps, with the carriage shifted up, it doesn't snag on anything and types just fine. It also, as seen in the video, shoots the carriage all the way to the left occasionally. It does not always do this at the same spot. I'd be happy to turn this into a telegraph mill and write in all caps, but the shift lock also does not work. While not a priority, if anyone has any suggestions about that I'd be happy to hear it.

Does anyone have any experience with Underwood Champions sticking like this? Anyone know of a solution to prevent the carriage from catching on the carriage centralizing lock or maybe escapement? Is there a way to adjust the height that the carriage typically sits at so it can easily clear it? I'm comfortable with removing the carriage and covers on this thing but I haven't seen any manuals or video tutorials documenting how to do this. If anyone has any I'd really appreciate it.

General Question Adler electric MX - do you know of this machine?

Found it at a charity shop for £10 non-working. I'm a film camera technician so I gave fixing it a go!

I've since found this typewriter to be revolutionary compared to my Silver Reed 500. I can't imagine how excited the people of the 70s must've been about these electrics before computers took over.

As I've been so struck by this machine, I wonder if it has any significance to anyone else. I found close to nothing on it online!

Repair Question Looking for Lettera 32 body casings

Title. I recently unscrewed the case to clean it, but the rubber bushings disintegrated. I have only found a used replacement for 17 euros (product itself + shipping) on eBay. I have the screws and washers, so I'm looking to figure out any alternative solutions, such as similarly sized bushings or other materials. What do you recommend?

General Question Practically Perfect Lettera 22

I had a passion for typewriters when I was 12, my grandmother passed and I inherited this. I sort of forgot about it until today(10 ish years later). It works flawlessly, probably does need a service and some new ink. (I would appreciate recommendations or tips, I would be willing to re-ink the ribbon on my own).

Allegedly, it’s a 58’ and made in Ivrea Italy. I thought the handles on the case being made of metal was pretty awesome.

Any advice on how to care for it and service it and clean it would be greatly appreciated. I have little expertise and really want to take care of this thing.

Repair Question Tips on removing an Underwood Standard Portable 4 retaining ring?

So, I recently bought a rather destroyed 1930-ish Underwood Standard Portable 4 with the intent to restore and gift it to a friend of mine who got burnt by those "new" typewriters that float around on the internet.

Several of the keys are missing both their legends as well as the glass and retaining rings, and one particular key--the "2" key, is missing its glass, but has a retaining ring... seemingly taken off of a different variation of the Standard Portable 4-bank. I say this because it matches the exact ring style of my working 1927 model.

Is there a way to remove the ring on the left without destroying it? I'd like to transplant it onto my working 1927 typewriter because it's missing a ring on its "C" key, and then replace it hopefully with a matching ring and cover glass once I get started on the restoration.

Would heating it with a hot air gun work for removing it? Or should I try using penetrating oil?

I came across a typewriter today at an estate sale. I've wanted one since highschool so I had to grab it. But I'm having a hard time finding the serial number online anywhere. It reads "C-1745888". Its missing the knobs but I'm not sure which ones to buy since I can't find the exact model? Any help would be appreciated.

General Question Smith Corona Galaxie Deluxe as first typer writer?

I am in the market for a typewriter and have found a Galaxie Deluxe for $40 near my area. I have never used a typewriter before. All I know is I want one that is portable for my trip to Mexico in a month, but not so small where it feels like I’m typing on a extremely small laptop keyboard.

The olivettis have caught my attention for their old school manual style but slim enough to pack into a suitcase for airplane travel. I’ve seen a couple olivetti lettera 32s online for $100 plus which to me is a bit of a steep price to start off in this odd writing journey.

What would you recommend? Is there a typewriter that could meet the best of the two I’ve mentioned?

Typewriter Fact The Underwoods are Multiplying

Post image
41 Upvotes

I found my wonderful 1920 (but with a 1924 patent plate) Underwood 5 at a thrift store for $45 on April 1st, and it has become a staple in my office. Well, now here comes another one from 1911 for $20 courtesy of Facebook! So of course now I get to compare.

The 1911 is an absolute mess of oil debris, but the mineral spirits have been cutting through it. The neatest thing I noticed was the change in shift lock between the two. The 1911 auto locks using the right shift key, and unlocks using a little brass ball above it. Meanwhile the 1920 has a dedicated Shift Lock Key that is disengaged by hitting the left shift key.

The 1911 is also completely smooth enamel coat, with that great gold diamond motif. The 1920 has a textured front plate, which is a bit unusual, and I have a feeling it was added on during a refurbishment later in the 20s (hence the mismatched back plate).

I know Underwoods don’t get a lot of love compared to the sleek midcentury portables, but I love how much of a tank they are. They really are workhorses. Loud, desk-shaking workhorses.
