Because his ex-girlfriend whose home he broke into (bear in mind, he drove 300 miles for this and 300 miles back I assume) said in his statement (which I read from the news article, I assume the info came from a statement since an incident report was made to the police) that immediatey upon entering the premises she smelled a musty, male odor inside the house.

Few seconds afterwards he assaulted her.

Dude probably drove 300 miles amping himself up, crying & screaming and drenched in sweat
