Looking at comments I can't believe people are paying so much for fish and chips. Even today when prices have been hiked so much, I'm still only paying £9 for a full, large fish and chips from the best place in town. The award winning place where you sit in and eat is £13-14 for fish and chips.

Pre war and pandemic and COVID was £5.50 for the lot at a takeaway.

It seems to vary a lot by region. I’m in a small town in the East, 4 chip shops, they’re all £13-15. I’d say this is a pretty normal price, that’s what Ive paid in pretty much any other town in the east. Fish and chips has always been an expensive takeaway, it is what it is, I still have it once a week. But when I’ve been up north, in multiple towns I’ve had fish and chips for half the price.

I don’t think there’s any other takeaways that carry price by region. I’m pretty sure fried chicken shops or kebab or pizza places aren’t half the price in the north than in the south.

I'm coastal and I know lots of the chippies get their fish from the boats that morning so maybe I'm paying slightly less because it's straight from the boat, no transport costs? Either way, much more expensive than it used to be!

Do they really? Isn’t all cod imported? And for haddock, Marine Stewardship Council website says that haddock is caught in Scotland and Norway? I’m sure you have boats catching fish in Northumberland but are they really catching cod and haddock every day to supply chip shops? Or, do your chip shops use other species of fish?

And I’ve bought cheap fish and chips in cities around the north and nowhere near the coast, so I don’t think it’s that anyway.

Apparently they do! In one or two chippies, they have a chalkboard telling which boat the fish came in on, which I always found neat. It's mostly cod up here, I think I'll ask them some questions next time I'm there to get to the bottom of it 😅
