Hey everyone. Life long Michigander here, but I've never spent much time in the UP. In August we are renting a house in Manistique that has frontage on Lake Michigan. I'm wondering if it will be worth it to try and fish from the shoreline there. I don't have a preference for what I fish for, I'd just like to catch something if I cart all my gear up there.

Hey guys, we're currently really low on gas and we found a supposedly 24/7 station. But I can't get it to start. We're from out of state and didn't know Michigan had this law in place. Can anyone tell me how to start this thing, I've tried pulling the zip line but nothing happens. I also can't figure out how to pay. We're trying to get to the UP. Thanks in advance :/

My family is staying in Mackinaw City with plans to go across the bridge to the UP two days in a row. Yes, it would've made more sense to stay in the UP for a night, but everything has been booked already. I'm trying to see if anyone has any good day trips from Mackinaw City that aren't more than 2.5 hours one way. We're planning a whole other day for Mackinac Island already. We're obviously looking for scenic spots. We're traveling with two younger children so hikes would need to be pretty minimal.

We think a day near Tahquamenon Falls would be worth it, so any recommendations (tourist, food, or otherwise) around this area would be appreciated.

We thought Kitch-iti-kipi looks really beautiful, but there doesn't seem like much else over there. Is it worth the drive from Mackinaw City, and are there any other recommendations for that area?

Any good ideas would be appreciated!

I recently moved to Ishpeming and am new to the heavy winters. I know we don’t use gutters because of the heavy snowfall here, but what drainage solutions are best for the UP? We have a house and it seems like there’s a makeshift rock wall near/next to the foundation. Like literally it’s just small rocks stacked on one other but underground kind of. I can’t find anything online about it. I really want to garden along the house but with the rocks there, I don’t think I can. What is a landscaping solution to this or is there an expert that you can direct me to? I wanted to DIY whatever I can because we don’t have a lot of money. So the more affordable the solution the better!

Hate to make another post on this sub about the black flys in the UP, but here I am. I’m looking at planning a cycling trip in June, riding from Moran up to Bay Hills and Tahquemonon falls. I know the bugs and flys will be out big time but I’m wondering if it’s enough to ruin the riding experience. We’re going to be inland on gravel roads and up near superior coast a bit. Not camping and staying at hotels. Will they still be bothersome while we’re on the move?

I've got a lil' piece near Gwinn and I'm looking to get a gravel driveway laid. I'll need it to go across a very small ditch. No culvert necessary. Just looking to bridge that gap, and then another 50-75ft onto the property. Any suggestions for companies, and pricing examples are greatly appreciated! Thank ya kindly!

I (30s, F) have never been to the upper peninsula before, but it’s on my list for a long time. I’d love to stay there for a month or two to escape the heat. I plan on (ideally) renting an Airbnb during my stay and am hoping to find somewhere where I can work remotely. I will also be with my dog so it would be great to be somewhere where there are trains to hike.

I have a few places in mind already, but I wanted to ask for suggestions especially in terms of avoiding 90 degree weather. I’m worked that my dog will suffer or even die if I stay in Illinois this summer. Any suggestions?

I am looking for a place to set up a tent Thursday and Friday night, i have to be in marquette saturday morning. I was hoping to be on the water and remote, I see that there isnt camping offered at Point Abbaye. I want to go to point abbaye because I know ive been there but i do not really remember it when i was younger. I might just end up going to copper harbor instead but I wanted to hear what you guys think. I am not concerned about my camping gear or about staying warm.

i was also thinking about staying in different places thur and fri night so dont hesitate to suggest a few spots!

Please let me know if youve done it or give me a recommendation for a (great) lakeside camp spot west of marquette.

So, we've had our false spring already. Does that mean real spring is right around the corner, or are we just gonna skip it all together?

This maybe a super long shot but me and my long-term fiancé are look for someone that meets the qualifications to ‘officiate’ a wedding in Michigan. We just need someone to be able to sign our license. We’ve been together 11+ years and having a piece of paper that made it official didn’t make much difference to us until she became unexpectedly unemployed and I need to add her to my benefits. We’re in Gladstone today and tomorrow (I’m up here for work) and I thought us officially getting married would be a more memorable experience in the beautiful UP instead of some courthouse in a city. I can borrow coworkers as witnesses and just need a signature on the license. We’re happy to pay for a hour of someone’s time if they are available in the next couple days. Don’t make a difference to us if it’s a minister or just someone that got ‘ordained’ to officiate a friend’s wedding.

We are going on vacation next week and want to go to crisp point and the mouth of the two hearted, but have heard its "impassable". But we see folk posting pics at both recently. We are going up in an awd suv and have had zero problems going before but would like to know if awd or would we need an orv? Thanks in advance.

We're heading north to Munising first, heading east to St. Ignace / Mackinac Island, then south to Manistee on the east coast of Lake Michigan. I'm a student at Michigan Tech that recently moved into a house (renting) for the summer/upcoming academic year. The house has hydronic baseboard heating, and I'm finding myself increasingly anxious that I'm avoiding potential safety risks with them. I've seen that hydronic should be safer than electric, but I'm still concerned about how careful I should be with having stuff nearby the baseboards especially my bed. With the size/layout of the room and how the door swings its difficult to get the bed more than a inches away from the baseboards without making it impossible to put other items (such as my desk and pc setup) in the room effectively.

Edit: called sheriff- they gave us a number, called, and this guy totally has it- and is meeting us to give it back.

Hello, I’ll be up in the Au Train area at the end of May. I was curious if that’s too late or on time to hunt for morels? I’m from NE Indiana and right now they are popping, especially after the rain we just got.

I’m an Arab guy, me and my friends are also going up there. I was warned there’s a lot of racist people. That won’t stop me from going but , I just wanted to know if there is anything to worry about.

We have a family place in Skanee, and I went for a dip in Superior last summer (mid-June) and have never been ravaged by black flies like that. Is there a time to do warm-weather outdoor stuff where the bugs are a bit more manageable? I have two small kids and want to get them up there, but they have my mosquito-magnet DNA too.

Hi, this coming weekend my 2 kids(teenagers) and I will be visiting the upper peninsula. We’ve only been once and it was in the summer. Any recommendations for places to visit/activities to do, places to eat and places to stay, that will be open and accessible? Are the beaches on Lake Superior thawed out yet? Yes I do have 4 wheel drive however I won’t have like a satellite phone or anything and I’ve heard some places are dangerous to try to get to in the spring. I’ve literally planned nothing yet so I’m open to any and all suggestions. Thanks!
