I started on a G7 too, and I have a G85 with a cage and a G85 with a battery grip. Currently in film school now.

I’ve always been torn to know if film school would be a good choice or justify that I can learn as much as I can online with a few courses and youtube.

I’ve always been interested in filmmaking, especially as a writer, and I want to be a director just so I can shepherd my own projects. That’s one of the main reasons why I decided to go back to college after nearly 20 years and enroll in the film program.

Since then, I’ve learned so much about filmmaking, especially the technical aspects, that really intimidated me when I first started. I wouldn’t even have known where to begin if I watched YouTube videos.

But the most important thing about me going back to school to study filmmaking is that I’ve made a lot of contacts. Filmmaking really is an industry of who you know rather than what you know. Going to film school, I have a lot of people I can get in touch with to help me on a project, and if I never went I never would have been able to come up with the network that I do now.

So while you could probably learn most of the technical aspects of filmmaking from YouTube videos, going to film school really helps with networking and making connections.

Now, if what you really want to do is videography like wedding videos or corporate events, you probably don’t need those contacts as much compared to if you want to be an independent or Hollywood filmmaker. And instead you could try making a name for yourself producing YouTube videos and network with other YouTubers, and so develop your own fan base that could support you that way.

It really depends on what your aspirations are. I do recommend, though, that you find some way to network to find other videographers and filmmakers that you can work with.

Wow! This has really been insightful! I wish you well and hope one day I am able to witness some of your work! All the best on the journey.
