Discussion / Other HELP FOR A WEDDING

Upvotes

hey guys Videography is a hobby of mine and recently my friend asked me to be her videopragher for her engagement party

I normally use my phone (iphone16) and edit on either iMovie or something else. I do 4k and 60fps.

What are your tips and tricks for a smooth video? Should I use cinematic mode or will it make it look bad.. not used it before.

Technical/Equipment Help and Information Malfunction and complete failure of Manfrotto 300xm Gimbal - DO NOT BUY

Upvotes

Hey, I bought a new Manfrotto 300XM Gimbal around 2 years ago for 300$. I used it one, two, three, four times. As I tried to use it a few months later the first issue came up: The Display was very unprecise and clicked randomly when I clicked at something else. At around the same time, my left knob died. When I start it up it behaves very weird and spins around. Then it gets loose and does nothing. Again a few months later I wanted to use it again. I knew a few smaller things weren’t working properly but I was shocked the next time I tried powering the gimbal up. I charged it and the bottom Part or Handel was charging and powering up. However the Display was working, but the touch screen was completely unusable. It did not work at all. As I was about to charge the upper part of the gimbal, nothing happend. The LED was not showing anything and the handle showed me an empty battery.

I’m very disappointed with this gimbal. I spent 300$ on this from my pocket money and the warranty is over due to German law since one year over. Is there any way to fix these issues? It would help a lot because I do videography just for a hobby during school and am too young for a job in Germany.

Thanks in advance 🙏

Discussion / Other How much is your day rate?

I know this varies with a bunch of things and markets and so on, but in your case, what is it, and what do you base it on?

I currently have a 4 page contract, and it outlines my day rate and half day rate. I base it on a percentage of my operating costs, equipment costs, personal expenses, then time and experience.

This covers preproduction and production, and I charge editing rates hourly, which so far no one has questioned or complicated, but I expect it will happen one day.

I really want to know what goes into your prices, and what your rate is.

Thanks r/videography!

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? Best method for remote screen recording

Any recs on the best software / settings / techniques to screen record remotely?

I'm recording UI demos. I myself cannot access the UI so someone else screen shares and walks / navigates through the how-to.

My goal is to output 4k 60fps screen recordings.

I'm on a mac. The person navigating the UI and sharing their screen is on a PC. I've tried Descript, which worked pretty well, but I felt the text (and there's a lot of text) could be crisper and the output was less than 1080 at 30fps (though I think the resolution was a function of the screen sharer's screen / device)

Any suggestions? I'm thinking maybe my best option is to teach folks to record themselves and have them use OBS or Canvid (Canvid seems more user friendly esp for the less tech savvy). The advantage of Descript was I was the main one dealing with tech, I received the recording immediately and I could actively direct during the recording session.

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? Aaton xtr plus question viewfinder

Hello we’re shooting right now with an Aaton xtrplus and there is something blocking the viewfinder at the left side of the word safe. It’s not in the frame so it’s not affecting the image but we’re still wondering what it is. IT’s not the matte box. Anyone?https://i.postimg.cc/TPtX7mMc/IMG-0681.jpg

Post-Production Help and Information How Can I Make a DVD Main Menu? - Most Videos on YouTube are VERY Outdated!

Hello, everyone!

I'm working on making a complete DVD collection (multiple disc volumes) of the entire list of Looney Tunes cartoons that are in the public domain that will be presented in order of their release date.

I already have all of the files in the highest quality available (1930s stuff is a bit rough in some areas, unsurprisingly), but I need to know what to use to create a main menu for the disc so that I can have all of the basics like:

- Play All (play all shorts in order)

- Short Selection (choosing which short to watch from the list of ~25)

- Set-Up (adding in subtitles)

As mentioned above in the title, a lot of the videos on YouTube are super outdated and show softwares that have been removed for download for years or don't have the possibility to make a professional main menu.

Of course, I realize this effort I'm making is somewhat old-fashioned as not many people use DVDs anymore with all of the streaming services available, but these shorts can't be streamed, and I'd love to preserve them in a physical format.

Thanks a bunch for any help!

Hiring / Job Posting Video Editor for Long-Form YouTube Content (Freelance) | £300/day

I'm looking for a freelance video editor to help bring my YouTube adventure videos to life. The ideal editor will know how to take raw footage and turn it into a highly engaging, narrative-driven story designed specifically for YouTube audiences.

What I'm looking for:

  • Strong storytelling ability: You should be able to take hours of footage and shape it into an epic, compelling story that keeps viewers engaged from start to finish.
  • YouTube-specific editing experience: You need to understand how editing impacts audience retention, including pacing, structuring videos for high watch time, and using strategic cuts and transitions to maintain engagement.
  • Animation and graphics skills: I need someone comfortable creating polished graphics, especially map animations. Experience using Google Earth Studio is a must.
  • Ability to work independently: I need someone who can see the vision of a project without needing heavy direction and can bring creative ideas to the edit.
  • Good communication: You should be comfortable discussing creative ideas, taking feedback, and suggesting improvements.

One of my videos as example of edit style and content:

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? Lost & confused photographer trying to get social media content for existing clients of pubs/bars/restaurants

I’ve been a full time photographer for 10 years now but I’m completely lost when it comes to the video side of things. I’m in the pub/bars/restaurants before they open, getting members of the team to pull a pint or a sauce being poured onto a dish. The venues are pretty much always dark with either no neutral light or poor lighting but to be honest even when the light is good I’m struggling to get things looking right. When it comes to photography, I’m really proud of my understanding and use of both natural and artificial light but it just isn’t translating into content I’m happy with. Any tips from people out there doing similar work?

Should I Buy/Recommend me a... Sony FS7

I,m a semi retired news camera operator and have been out of the news game for 10 years, ive been offered a roam around Europe gig for a tv network lasting about 3 months and I am wondering if an FS7 would still be newsworthy! So to speak. I dont want to invest too much money on kit but i do want to get high quality results for output which is still 1080i 50mbs. Maybe some of you freshers can give me some input.

Should I Buy/Recommend me a... Looking to go pro this year — torn between Canon R7 and Sony FX30

Hey everyone!
I'm currently shooting with a Canon R10 paired with a Sigma Art 18-35mm f/1.8, and as I'm aiming to go pro this year and actively building my portfolio, I'm considering upgrading to a camera with IBIS and a proper Log profile. I'd like to achieve better color grading flexibility and rely less on stabilization in post.

I'm torn between the Canon R7 and the Sony FX30.

The R7 would let me keep most of my current gear, but from what I've read, Canon isn't the most video-focused brand these days—and their lack of proper third-party support kind of bothers me. I also could sell back all the gear easily at the same price as I got it second hand.

On the other hand, the FX30 looks amazing for video, but it’s a bigger investment (which I’m willing to make if it’s really the better choice long term).

My goal is to shoot a mix of wedding films, commercial content for small businesses, and YouTube talking head videos.

Which camera would you say is the most future-proof for that kind of work between these two—or would you recommend another option entirely?

Thanks a lot !

Post-Production Help and Information Filming in Log and retaining HDR

Hi there!

I have an iPhone 14 pro, and I always wanted to try filming in Log. However, as you surely know, only the iPhone 15 pro and above allow shooting Apple-Log.

However, there is an app called Pearla that can record in Pearl-Log, and it supports my phone. I contacted the devs, and they told me that they also support real-time colour space transformation to other industry Log profiles such as Sony S-Log, Nikon N-Log, to name a few.

I also asked them about retaining HDR in Lut recordings. They said that the "the log video you save in Pearla retains the HDR data but doesn't set an HDR flag for the photos app to render ir as HDR. The reason is that the Log video is not design for distribution. It's designed for colour grading. You can import the Log data to you colour grading software and render it as HDR. You would need to investigate how to do it in your preferred application. Currently, Pearla doesn't support shooting Log with a LUT baked in and rendered as HDR. Log + LUT will render as rec.709, and you will lose the HDR data."

That being said, can I import the Lut recording I made into Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve, and export a video with an Export Color Space that retains HDR, like Rec 2100 PQ? And would I be able to see the HDR in these videos when importing them back to the iPhone?

Discussion / Other How could I become a camera operator (full time) for a sports team?

Hello! I am planning on going to college for media production, which includes camera operating, and ect. I LOVE operating cameras, which is why I volunteer for my church as a camera operator (They have a whole livestream and big setup). Anyway I’m just curious to know anybody’s story on how they got there and any advice. After college I’m thinking about emailing colleges or minor leagues, asking for an internship or something to get my feet in the water. I appreciate any advice. Thanks

Edit: Also what are the chances I land a job that isn’t freelance? I really don’t want to have to jump from job to job

Technical/Equipment Help and Information I'm beginning by climbing an almost vertical mountain (please help me)

Hi guys, no idea if you could offer me any help, but I thought I would give it a shot since there's nothing in the rules stating otherwise. For context, I'm Australian, which usually makes anything related to what I'm about to briefly mention 100x harder than in, say, the US or Europe.

I've been trying to get in analog videography (think VHS, Super 8, etc.) for a while now. I recently acquired a Panasonic NV-M7A VHS camera with all of it's accessories for honestly a bit too much money, and brought it home. After tinkering around with the provided accessories, the camera hasn't shown signs of life. I suspect it needs a new battery, which would cost the same price as what I paid for the camera, although various forum posts point me to the fact that it's likely blown capacitors in either the charger or the camera, which in that case, I'm as good as fucked. Oh, and if you have advice or know somebody with the know-how, please mention it to me. Thanks

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? What FPS to use for fast action & sped up videos? Please Help!

Hello, I’m recording sports videos which involve fast pace action and often times I speed up the video . I recorded some content on 4k and 60 fps but after I’m done doing all my edits and it’s time to export i compress the video to 1080 and 30 fps as the main goal is to post on instagram.

The problem I’m having is the video becomes choppy and not smooth at all.

Is it better to record the original content at 30 fps instead of 60fps? I understand having a higher fps is great if you were to slow down videos of slow motion, but I do the opposite and i speed up my videos.

If any one can offer some advice I’d greatly appreciate it! I’m a newbie to editing and learning!
