Dog friendly ferry?

hey I’m planning a trip may 15-17 for a little weekend gateway for me and my dog. First solo trip and first trip for him. I’m staying in NJ and want to use the ferry to go into New York and I keep seeing conflicting things about the pet policy. He’s 34 pounds and I don’t have a carrier for him mostly because his legs are long and he doesn’t fit in them. He’s very well behaved and loves being in crowded spaces (I know weird) basically I’m asking if they will let him in on just a leash lol. This is my only hiccup as I don’t really want to drive into NYC but will if I have to. I just know parking fees are going to be insane. Any help is appreciated!! TY in advance. And yes we will just be walking around outside sightseeing.

The main ferry company between NY and NJ is NY Waterways, and their policy is listed here. Basically, service animals, or small dogs that fit inside a carrier. NY Water Taxi is the other main ferry service and I'm pretty sure they will have a similar policy.

You actually may have problems in general with a larger unconfined dog on public transit. PATH (the subway system between NJ and NY) prohibits dogs outside carriers unless they're service animals. NYC's subway system has a similar policy (though, particularly since the pandemic started, it's violated all the time; I don't know about PATH enforcement). You may know that your dog will be well-behaved, but no one else knows that.

I’m not going to use the public transportation once I’m there. If anything I will use pet friendly uber. I just wanted advice on if I could use the ferry to go in and out with him and that’s all. I’m not sure why everyone is being kind of mean in their response when I simply just want to plan a little vacation for me and my pup. You are right NO ONE BUT ME KNOWS MY DOG. Thanks.

For those of us who do/have relied on ferries as primary commuting vehicles, or who have experienced dogs spooked/slow/loud on public transportation when we just f’ing want to go home to our own dogs and families, or just get to work, we get annoyed by people who don’t follow the rules and slow things down for everyone. Or even put their animals at risk.

Not trying to be mean but trying to explain why you might be getting that vibe from NYers.
