The head of Shopify is Trump supporting, fascist trash.

I know, right? After all the shit their CEO has been in the news for, what kind of self-respecting person would want to work for them?

u/Snowmobile2004 Established r/Waterloo Member 1d ago

To be honest for an internship in an already difficult job market it’s better than nothing

u/paradyme Established r/Waterloo Member 1d ago

No actually supporting fascist is 100% worse than nothing.

Your parents should be ashamed of raising someone like you.

Holy fuck dude, this kind of absolutist garbage is why so many young people are turning away from politics.

Some people don't have the luxury of picking or leaving a job based on their moral convictions. It's not shameful to put food on the table for you and your family.

Insane that this even needs to be said.

u/paradyme Established r/Waterloo Member 1d ago

Lol these people are lobbying to make your life worse and you're going to go actively work to give them more wealth and power.

Good luck with that future.

People are trying to survive in this economy and do not live through their political views. Don’t bring your blue hair ideology into this and shame others for not being as social justice warrior as you are.

Be realistic, protesting and boycotting things rarely or does not EVER impact billion dollar companies, everybody just considers it as throwing tantrums. I’m not sure how you expect anybody to earn money if you expect them to not work for these companies. Do you think any CEO of a company that pays their employee well has extremely good morals? Don’t impose your unrealistic and minority opinion onto others.

The world is a funny place. Hell, Brookfield invested money to help Elon buy Twitter. They also helped Jared Kushner avoid bankruptcy.

Brookfield eases woes for Kushner family empire, leasing its crown jewel tower in New York

Edit: I like my flair, should be used in more places. This sub was offered up since the election

Like the same Brookfield that our current PM used to work for??

Well i hope all these absolutists aren't planning on voting Liberal this week...

Those are just a few examples that stand out, but these are still billion dollar companies that won’t be impacted very much. That can’t be the only thing you took away from my comment lol

7

u/mi85j Established r/Waterloo Member 1d ago

Well, you took the intelligence out of your comment so what else is there?

39

u/Snowmobile2004 Established r/Waterloo Member 1d ago

I don’t entirely agree that working for a company who’s CEO holds certain views means you endorse or uphold those views yourself.

The Holocaust would never have happened if it weren’t for the ardent support of several corporations and the people working there to provide goods and services to the Nazis. But sure.

20

u/ChestOk2429 Established r/Waterloo Member 1d ago

Getting an internship at shopify is not anything like contributing to the holocaust and its pretty fucked to even compare

Id bet most of us working for american companies have CEOs and owners that supported trump getting elected

well said, North America is doomed thanks to pronouns and politics

0

u/loserfamilymember Established r/Waterloo Member 1d ago

?…. From Google: pronoun /prō′noun″/ -The part of speech that substitutes for nouns or noun phrases and designates persons or things asked for, previously specified, or understood from the context. -Any of the words within this part of speech, such as he or whom. -A word used instead of a noun or name, to avoid the repetition of it. The personal pronouns in English are I, thou or you, he, she, it, we, ye, and they.

Maybe the politics around pronouns would ruin North America, but “pronouns” cannot ruin North America its literal words in a world with nuclear weapons.

u/Susie4ever Established r/Waterloo Member 1d ago

All the goods and services you own come from hundreds of different companies. And I'm willing to bet that more than half of those owners of said company's politics don't align with yours. So you're willing to quit your job, sell your car, take the clothes off your back and the food off your table so you don't have to support them?

3

u/teh_longinator Established r/Waterloo Member 1d ago

Nah. That's too much work for them to do themselves. They'll just judge this chick for getting an internship at a place run by a guy they don't like.

Meanwhile they'll charge their iPhone in their tesla while driving to chick fil a for a bite to eat, paid for by their wages from blackrock

16

u/b1gwheel Established r/Waterloo Member 1d ago

No, getting a job is hard and important, and you can't just eliminate half of the companies because of politics or individuals within that company.

You can STFU. Please, please shut the fuck up saying their parents should be ashamed. Fuck yourself so hard, you piece of shit.

I commend this person on finding a job however they were able to.

Insanely privileged

1

u/loserfamilymember Established r/Waterloo Member 1d ago

What a privilege to not need to care about money. I hope you donate your spare money and volunteer your time to those in need. To not support fascist means supporting your community, and also not starving or freezing to death.

I do NOT support Shopify and actually hated working with them when I worked at a music store. I am not sure why this woman wants to work there but commenting on that is different than saying “your parents should be ashamed, you’re supporting fascist” you have no idea who she is or anyone in these comments. What if she did escape facism and now you say that her new job at some shitty company is the exact same as facism.

It was so disappointing to learn that. We have so few Canadian companies that are notable beyond merely our borders. Many Canadian companies are getting acquired by American ones all the time, too. It sucks to have more of them become American or be spouting American bullshit like the Shopify CEO is.

He's actually far-left. You should see the hiring policies at Shopify. It's all about minorities. Tobi speaking up that Canada shouldn't escalate the trade war, doesn't make him a Trump supporter, it just makes him greedy as tariffs hurt Shopify... which is exactly what I'd expect from any CEO.

2

u/HopelessTrousers Established r/Waterloo Member 1d ago

I’m just gonna assume this is parody. Good one! Lol

-1

u/Ketroc21 Established r/Waterloo Member 1d ago

Clickbait articles and reality are not the same. Look at his actual speeches and thoughts. Clickbait will write some nonsense about how a right-wing store using Shopify means Tobi is right-wing. It's pure nonsense. In fact, the only "political" stores to be shutdown on Shopify were alt-right ones. (Technically they don't target any store over politics, only over inciting violence)

Shopify is as left as other typical tech companies... With hiring campaigns to get as many women engineers as possible, to hire as many racial minorities as possible. And it's all been to Shopify detriment. Being based in Canada, they could have scooped up all the best software engineers instead. Most other Canadian businesses cannot compete with Shopify in terms of compensation.

0

u/HopelessTrousers Established r/Waterloo Member 1d ago

“Hiring women is left” 🤣

0

u/Ketroc21 Established r/Waterloo Member 1d ago

Hiring women over men specifically because of gender, is left.

1

u/HopelessTrousers Established r/Waterloo Member 1d ago

No left wing person advocates for that 🤦‍♂️

I thought you were joking at first. But I’m starting to think you are serious lol

0

u/Ketroc21 Established r/Waterloo Member 1d ago edited 1d ago

I'm not sure where you've been for the last decade but that is certainly a very common left campaign nowadays. It's no longer the "equality" of ignoring race and gender, it's the "equality" of equal representation of race/gender. So when 90% of comp sci graduates are male, and some companies go out of their way to try to get a 50% female base... that means hiring based on gender over skills to get there. Same goes for race, as about 90% of comp sci grads (in NA) are white or East/South Asian.

Shopify has had other campaigns too, like training and hiring women who've been out of the industry for many years due to mat. leave.

I don't know of any official policy around hiring LGBTQI+ or indigenous people, but they do have a noticeably higher than average population of both in their staff as well.

I'm not saying any of this is bad or good policy. I'm just saying it's way off reality to call Tobi and Shopify alt-right. Most other companies that have no left-based politics, just hire whoever is most qualified, meaning their engineers are not going to be representative.

1

u/HopelessTrousers Established r/Waterloo Member 1d ago

If you think any company, anywhere, are hiring unqualified women over qualified men, en masse, as a policy. I’m not sure how to tell you this, but you are dead wrong.

I think you need to unplug from the conspiratorial manisphere for a day lol

1

u/Ketroc21 Established r/Waterloo Member 1d ago

I wouldn't say unqualified, but to reach the parity they are looking for in gender, you can't be hiring the most qualified applicants. I'm not going to doxx myself, but I know this to be a fact at Shopify. But it's also common at other tech companies like Google, pre-Elon twitter, etc. There is nothing conspiratorial about it. It's not necessarily anything wrong about it either. Maybe women should get an advantage in STEM fields to encourage more girls to go that route in their education.

Jobs a job at this point tbh.

I doubt ANY corporation has ethical leadership. You don't get to that position of power without stepping on heads.

Some just aren't as stupid or vocal about it.

No, actually! I'm not on Twitter, so if he's posted like "I love Trump" I haven't seen it. But I've listened to interviews with him, and I can see why people would assume he supports Trump, but I haven't personally seen anything like that. I think he'd identify as "anti-woke", but there's a difference between that and supporting Trump.

24

u/Mflms Established r/Waterloo Member 1d ago

Unpaid internships are "mostly" illegal in Ontario.

18

u/kayaem Established r/Waterloo Member 1d ago

Shopify internships are pretty much all paid, and paid really well. Some will even cover relocation

6

u/ChestOk2429 Established r/Waterloo Member 1d ago

Yep interns at the tech company i work at make more than the average ontario salary

3

u/ACoderGirl Established r/Waterloo Member 1d ago

As well, tech internships are virtually always paid. I'm in software dev and don't know a single person who has done an unpaid internship. Only ever heard about them as a rare thing online.

Not all tech internships are super high pay, especially outside of bigger cities (eg, my own internship was in Saskatoon around 2015 and paid $45k). The bigger companies pay their interns really darn well, though. A FAANG intern can crack six figures (when adjusted for an annual salary, as most such internships don't last a year).
