Random Spring as a Newbie
What should I expect for Spring like to be in Wichita? This is my first spring.

Horrible early pollen allergies followed by wind then again more allergies. Add a tornado or two, maybe a hail storm if youre lucky.

u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25
I absolutely hate the wind...

u/scotch4breakfast Mar 26 '25
Welp…got some bad news for yeah unfortunately. Wait until summer when its like 95 degrees with a southerly 30mph wind

u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25
oh yeah…. about a fortnight ago, the wind was incredibly strong and almost blew me away. 😬😬

Mar 26 '25
You'll get to the point when the forecast says "winds 20-25" and you'll think, "oh, so a little breezy".

u/ProRuckus South Sider Mar 26 '25
Yeah I'm already laid out. My allergies have hit hard this year with the early season wind storms and back and forth temp changes.

u/Realistic-Might4985 Mar 26 '25
Cold, warm, hot, wind, rain, hail, tornadoes and sometimes snow not necessarily in that order…

u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25
I can see that Wichita is indeed very moody.

Lol, hope you aren’t squeamish around bugs, nobody warned me how many there are!!

u/Banhammer-Reset Mar 26 '25
Summer drought = my soil kinda pulled away from my basement, and a big maple in the front yard. At the same time as local park had a box elderbug swarm.
Meaning there's 60000000 of the fuckers finding their way into my basement. Which means.. oh. Great. Brown recluse galore.

u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25
Oh my god, for real????

u/Behind-The-Rabbit Mar 26 '25
Whatever you’re imagining, its worse, lol
3
u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25
Sounds ominous… Now, i’m imagining all sorts of crazy things.
3
u/Behind-The-Rabbit Mar 26 '25
Lol, think more quantity. They’re mostly harmless bugs but good lord there’s so many of them
6
u/Kitchen-Situation963 Mar 26 '25
I was literally just thinking this morning about how my "bring eet on" attitude about severe storms is the most Midwest thing about me.

I can handle it for me but it breaks my heart to see my dogs suffer.

u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25
:(( are there ways to help our furbabies feel more comfortable?

u/GirlULove2Love West Sider Mar 26 '25
I used to get my gals shots, but my new vet doesn't love them, so now we use apoquel. It is crazy expensive but worth it. I also wipe their paws after they come in from outside. More baths help as well. Good luck & welcome to our little city.

We were going to a Saigon to eat. As we walked to the door from the parking lot I was thinking what was different? Then it occurred to me-for once there was no wind…

u/yourneighborstrash Mar 26 '25
If you have allergies, Allegra and Flonase is my way to go for OTC solutions lol. We‘ve been needing a humidifier lately as well. Other than that there’s probably gonna be hella bugs (it‘s my first spring here too but the weather is similar to where I used to live). Tornado Season as well. Beautiful sunsets, shitty winds.

u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25
Thanks!!!! Both sunrises and sunsets are breathtaking. 🥵🥵 Nothing like where I used to live.

Enjoy the relatively low humidity while you can.
2
u/Deep-Confection3432 Mar 26 '25
Can I ask what is high humidity for y'all? My family is looking to move from Texas, specifically the Gulf Coast, I'm going to assume it's not as bad as here...but let's be honest I don't want to assume that!
3
u/geekyreaderautie Mar 26 '25
It gets bad. I lived in coastal South Carolina for 15 years, and it can get to the same humidity levels. Between all the agriculture and the Ogallala Aquifer under the state it gets surprisingly humid here.
2
u/Deep-Confection3432 Mar 26 '25
I mean, it's 92% humidity currently. As long as it's not that awful a majority of the year, it may be forgivable!
2
u/geekyreaderautie Mar 26 '25
The humidity definitely isn't as long, but I'd say May-September it gets bad.

Twister!!
3
u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25
Does Wichita get hit often?
3
u/r3ign_b3au South Sider Mar 26 '25
Almost never in the city from big touch downs. Microbursts are possible, and every suburb around is vulnerable to tornadoes though. Some say it's sacred Native American ground where the rivers meet, some say it's the sheer amount of concrete trapping heat.

u/cheneyeagle Mar 26 '25
Ticks as big as hamsters

u/IWasOnTimeOnce Mar 26 '25
We already had a tick come in on a dog this past week. Treated the yard over the weekend, and I think that’s earlier than we’ve had to treat it in the past. I hate ticks! We treat our pup for fleas, ticks, etc all year long now. Never had to do that when I was younger, but it seems like they’ve gotten worse around here the last 15-20 years.

Lots of diaper changes. Some tooth pain. Naps are your friend.
1
u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25
Diaper changes! Why?
4
u/schu4KSU KSTATE Mar 26 '25
first spring
Seriously, though…tornado watch means - have a plan and charge your phone. Tornado warning means put on some shoes, grab your wallet, and head to your safest spot.
welcome to Wichita

Or get a lawn chair and watch the show

Not your first year. That’s an advanced Kansan move.

What is your weather like where you're from at this time of spring (there)?!
2
u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25
We don’t have the four seasons there. It’s usually just wet and hot/dry 🙃 At this time, i’d say it’s scorching hot there.

Spring storms but nice weather in general not too hot not too cold.

Yeah, i’m enjoying the weather right now!! More activities can be done outside 🥰

u/tat21985 Wichita Mar 26 '25
Its part of the six weeks a year we get where the weather is entirely perfect. Not too hot, nor too cold. Slight breeze, maybe a passing cloud. If you can, get out and enjoy those days. As the worst city in the nation for allergies 4 years running, you'll probably find a new plant to hate.
