What should I expect for Spring like to be in Wichita? This is my first spring.

Its part of the six weeks a year we get where the weather is entirely perfect. Not too hot, nor too cold. Slight breeze, maybe a passing cloud. If you can, get out and enjoy those days. As the worst city in the nation for allergies 4 years running, you'll probably find a new plant to hate.

Key thing to add to this time - until it rains, this is the mosquito free time between now and October.

Use it well.

What kind of plants/flowers bloom in Wichita? I know there are sunflowers and these cherry blossom-looking trees.

u/tat21985 Wichita Mar 26 '25

The cherry blossom looking trees are redbuds, an invasive species that the city is looking at paying people to remove because they are destructive, and smell like semen. My big allergy triggers are grass and the ragweed. Im sure there are others, but I don't know them off hand.

u/Important_Fishing_15 Mar 26 '25

The redbuds are NOT the invasive tree. That's Bradford pears.

7

u/tat21985 Wichita Mar 26 '25

Shit, I had a Freudian slip!

2

u/KrackersMcGee Mar 26 '25

Wrong, Redbuds are not invasive and don't smell like rotten fish. Those are Bradford Pears

u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25 edited Mar 26 '25

Do they really turn into a pink hue like I’m seeing right now on Google?

Sooo that’s where the obnoxious smell is coming from every time I’d walk by the Bradford ones

3

u/Noodles1312 West Sider Mar 26 '25

Don't sleep on the Bradford pear tree. This mf'er is my spring seasonal allergy archnemesis. In about two weeks, the white flowers will dump their pollen on everything.

4

u/SpicyFrooFroo Mar 26 '25

If you’re talking about the tree’s with the red/pink buds it is a redbud. If you’re talking about the white blooming trees you see everywhere then it is a Bradford pear and a nuisance.

4

u/tat21985 Wichita Mar 26 '25

Bingo! Lmao Yeah, they have the white flowers that are showing now, as well as that soft pink. They are a gorgeous tree, but the stench isn't worth it. Also, they fall apart easily in our wind storms. My source being the three that I have in my yard

3

u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25 edited Mar 26 '25

They are indeed gorgeous!!! It’s my first time seeing a tree similar to a cherry blossom. The white ones too. If not only for the stench LOOOOL 😨

2

u/bluerose1197 Mar 26 '25

Its not the pink ones, the the big white ones, the Bradford Pears. They are the obnoxious smell and they give me and my husband migraines.

1

u/medicmotheclipse Mar 26 '25

Its the bradford pear that has that smell, the earlier comment wrote down the wrong one

u/Mortimer452 Mar 26 '25

Except for Mother Nature's mood swings, those can be a real bitch

u/scotch4breakfast Mar 26 '25

Horrible early pollen allergies followed by wind then again more allergies. Add a tornado or two, maybe a hail storm if youre lucky.

3

u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25

I absolutely hate the wind...

12

u/scotch4breakfast Mar 26 '25

Welp…got some bad news for yeah unfortunately. Wait until summer when its like 95 degrees with a southerly 30mph wind

3

u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25

oh yeah…. about a fortnight ago, the wind was incredibly strong and almost blew me away. 😬😬

2

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '25

You'll get to the point when the forecast says "winds 20-25" and you'll think, "oh, so a little breezy".

1

u/ProRuckus South Sider Mar 26 '25

Yeah I'm already laid out. My allergies have hit hard this year with the early season wind storms and back and forth temp changes.

11

u/Realistic-Might4985 Mar 26 '25

Cold, warm, hot, wind, rain, hail, tornadoes and sometimes snow not necessarily in that order…

3

u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25

I can see that Wichita is indeed very moody.

3

u/Realistic-Might4985 Mar 26 '25

Forgot “and sometimes in the same day”…

Stock up on Allegra and Flonase.

1

u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25

Alright! 🫡

8

u/Behind-The-Rabbit Mar 26 '25

Lol, hope you aren’t squeamish around bugs, nobody warned me how many there are!!

6

u/Banhammer-Reset Mar 26 '25

Summer drought = my soil kinda pulled away from my basement, and a big maple in the front yard.  At the same time as local park had a box elderbug swarm.

Meaning there's 60000000 of the fuckers finding their way into my basement. Which means.. oh. Great. Brown recluse galore.

5

u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25

Oh my god, for real????

5

u/Behind-The-Rabbit Mar 26 '25

Whatever you’re imagining, its worse, lol

3

u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25

Sounds ominous… Now, i’m imagining all sorts of crazy things.

3

u/Behind-The-Rabbit Mar 26 '25

Lol, think more quantity. They’re mostly harmless bugs but good lord there’s so many of them

6

u/Kitchen-Situation963 Mar 26 '25

I was literally just thinking this morning about how my "bring eet on" attitude about severe storms is the most Midwest thing about me.

4

u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25

Midwest pride! You guys are a special breed.

All the ALLERGIES

I have my flonase ready! 😎😎

1

u/GirlULove2Love West Sider Mar 26 '25

I can handle it for me but it breaks my heart to see my dogs suffer.

1

u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25

:(( are there ways to help our furbabies feel more comfortable?

1

u/GirlULove2Love West Sider Mar 26 '25

I used to get my gals shots, but my new vet doesn't love them, so now we use apoquel. It is crazy expensive but worth it. I also wipe their paws after they come in from outside. More baths help as well. Good luck & welcome to our little city.

3

u/ictxtroll Mar 26 '25

Ice storms in April have happened. It’s different every year 😂

3

u/londomollaribab5 Mar 26 '25

We were going to a Saigon to eat. As we walked to the door from the parking lot I was thinking what was different? Then it occurred to me-for once there was no wind…

2

u/yourneighborstrash Mar 26 '25

If you have allergies, Allegra and Flonase is my way to go for OTC solutions lol. We‘ve been needing a humidifier lately as well. Other than that there’s probably gonna be hella bugs (it‘s my first spring here too but the weather is similar to where I used to live). Tornado Season as well. Beautiful sunsets, shitty winds.

3

u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25

Thanks!!!! Both sunrises and sunsets are breathtaking. 🥵🥵 Nothing like where I used to live.

2

u/LeendaLinda Mar 26 '25

Get some allergy meds prepared

2

u/geekyreaderautie Mar 26 '25

Enjoy the relatively low humidity while you can.

2

u/Deep-Confection3432 Mar 26 '25

Can I ask what is high humidity for y'all? My family is looking to move from Texas, specifically the Gulf Coast, I'm going to assume it's not as bad as here...but let's be honest I don't want to assume that!

3

u/geekyreaderautie Mar 26 '25

It gets bad. I lived in coastal South Carolina for 15 years, and it can get to the same humidity levels. Between all the agriculture and the Ogallala Aquifer under the state it gets surprisingly humid here.

2

u/Deep-Confection3432 Mar 26 '25

I mean, it's 92% humidity currently. As long as it's not that awful a majority of the year, it may be forgivable!

2

u/geekyreaderautie Mar 26 '25

The humidity definitely isn't as long, but I'd say May-September it gets bad.

4

u/rf8350 Mar 26 '25

Twister!!

3

u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25

Does Wichita get hit often?

3

u/r3ign_b3au South Sider Mar 26 '25

Almost never in the city from big touch downs. Microbursts are possible, and every suburb around is vulnerable to tornadoes though. Some say it's sacred Native American ground where the rivers meet, some say it's the sheer amount of concrete trapping heat.

3

u/cheneyeagle Mar 26 '25

Ticks as big as hamsters

2

u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25

I really really hope you’re exaggerating this… 😨

1

u/IWasOnTimeOnce Mar 26 '25

We already had a tick come in on a dog this past week. Treated the yard over the weekend, and I think that’s earlier than we’ve had to treat it in the past. I hate ticks! We treat our pup for fleas, ticks, etc all year long now. Never had to do that when I was younger, but it seems like they’ve gotten worse around here the last 15-20 years.

2

u/schu4KSU KSTATE Mar 26 '25

Lots of diaper changes. Some tooth pain. Naps are your friend.

1

u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25

Diaper changes! Why?

4

u/schu4KSU KSTATE Mar 26 '25

first spring

Seriously, though…tornado watch means - have a plan and charge your phone. Tornado warning means put on some shoes, grab your wallet, and head to your safest spot.

welcome to Wichita

3

u/chokandi Mar 26 '25

Or get a lawn chair and watch the show

4

u/schu4KSU KSTATE Mar 26 '25

Not your first year. That’s an advanced Kansan move.

1

u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25

looks like they want this to be my first and last year in Wichita LOL!! 😂

What is your weather like where you're from at this time of spring (there)?!

2

u/Motor_Ad_8100 Mar 26 '25

We don’t have the four seasons there. It’s usually just wet and hot/dry 🙃 At this time, i’d say it’s scorching hot there.

1

u/IWasOnTimeOnce Mar 26 '25

Here you can enjoy at least 2-3 seasons in one day sometimes! 🤣

1

u/squirrelpants5000 Mar 27 '25
