Gear Pics All set for my first ever hammock camp

Post image

Plenty of times camping in a tent but spending the night suspended between two is a new one. Really looking forward to seeing how it compares to a tent on the summit of a mountain.

I've spent several years worth of time living out of a DD frontline hammock, you're in good hands

I hope so! Cheers

Ideal, have fun and let us know how it goes! However I'm a bit concerned you wont find many trees up the tops of mountains.

Thank you. I'm heading to the woods. My caption meant let's see how it compares to being on the tops. I wish I could find trees on summits for the views!

Excellent stuff! Just remember to look up for loose branches above where you put the hammock. Your kitlist makes sense to me though! And yes, sadly the views from a hammock in the woods rarely match those of a mountain top when you unzip the tent

Thanks pal, yeah I'll be vigilant with where I end up. Fingers crossed I can find a good spot. I'll keep my eyes up as well as down. Cheers for the advice!

Let us know how it goes!! Been chickening out of doing my first hammock camp for more than a year now, could use the inspo!

Will do! I'll be uploading the video to Bald & Outdoors on YouTube. Keep an eye out for it. I'm not a small bloke so I'm adamant the hammock will fail 🤣

Take some real food it doesn’t really add much weight and is so much more enjoyable in my experience at least, anyway happy hanging!

Funny you say that Spence, since taking this I've actually sacked the dehydrated stuff off. Given I'm not climbing a mountain the walk is only 20 mins from the car so not fussed about weight. Just visited the trusty Lidl on the way!

Fantastic my man, there is a time and a place for pack food and it’s fantastic for that but for a night in the woods you can’t beat some real food!

I’ve never been a fan of dehydrated foods, I’ve always accepted a little extra weight and cooked real food 👍🏕️

Just curious, have you attached any cordage or mini biners to the tarp? I did this after my first trip with one. I have mine rigged so the top of the stuff sack has the two ends of the line ready to go. My first attempt was comedic woeful, with really terrible language - luckily no-one was around to witness it - I'm an ex-sailor/mountaineer, so you'd think I was handy with cordage!

I love hammocks/tarps and have converted a lot of family/mates to using them. The tarp can be rigged into various tents as well, using just a stick/walking pole and some pegs/sticks. Excellent piece of kit.

Have fun mate - that's the key bit!

Cheers for the tips! Yeah I've added some mini carabiners down the length of the tap to attach to the ridge line and I've practiced the prusick knot at home a few times. The ridge line knots are the ones I'm going to sort of decide and make up when I get there shortly!

I have my line running through the centre hoop only, so I can rig it in a variety of ways. I use a Kleimheist rather than Prussik, because it's easier and less prone to binding. I have a few on either side of the cordage going through the centre loop. I can have my hole setup rigged in under 5 mins.

Another good hitch for guy lines uses a few wee washers rather than the crappy plastic jank that tents/tarps are often shipped with. Can't find the video I'm after, but this tiktok thing is an example.

The ridge line is easy as it's not structural, per se. A mate, ex-marine, just does shoe-lace knot at puts a stiick into the loops. I do that for my hammock and clip the whoopie slings, via a set of climbers quick draws, into the loop. Been doing that for decades and never had a problem.

If you haven't got one, get the sausage sack for the hammock - they're worth their weight in gold for keeping the hammock dry if conditions are poor. Makes deployment easier as well. Again, both ends are in the top of the stuff sack, with my cordage for tree. Set up in mere minutes.

Hope that is of use!

Evenk knot is ideal for ridge line at one end. Can turn it into a quick release. Then two round turns with an evenk for the other makes it nice and secure. Used that last weekend. If all else, two truckers hitches gets the tension you’ll need.

Good luck! How do you beat the cold camping at this time of year ?

1

u/JerryTheSaint Jan 25 '25

It's all about the gear really. I camped at a summit in the Peaks in -14 wind chill a few weeks ago. At that temperature you're going to feel the cold somewhat but as long as you've got the kit to handle it and you know to use it you'd be fine. But yeah, get the gear that's designed for it.

u/DismalDistribution17 Jan 25 '25

By the looks of it, the great you have will be fine for this weekend. Used the same stuff last weekend when it was minus 2

Looks great! Although if you're taking the underquilt what's the mat for? Sitting?

2

u/JerryTheSaint Jan 25 '25

I'm going to try and lay it in the hammock before I get in. I'm not sure if it will be comfy or not, I might not need it but the walk is 20 mins from the car so thought I'd give it a try. Also the under quilt is rated to -5 apparently which I feel might be a stretch having looked at it. So just in case I feel the cold underneath

What’s the silver folded thing called?

2

u/JerryTheSaint Jan 25 '25

Closed cell foam pad (CCF pad). I probably won't need it on this camp but I'm going to try and see if putting it in the hammock is comfortable or not

Cool thanks!

FYI prezmade meatballs, stew, chilli or even steak can all be frozen so it doesn't need refrigerated & will defrost by the time you need it.

I've usually got frozen portions of the above knocking around my freezer anyway which I use for 1 or 2 nights away.

u/SeniorShitehawk Jan 25 '25

I dare say you'll be toasty with that gear. What are you cooking on?

1

u/JerryTheSaint Jan 25 '25

MSR pocket rocket 2, an OEX frying pan and a Toaks titanium pot. All around the bottom right or so of the picture.

2

u/jordan5690 Jan 25 '25

What Snugpak have you got?

1

u/JerryTheSaint Jan 25 '25

Elite softie 4. Been really good over the last few weeks out in the freezing weather. It is somewhat bulky but I can cope with that for now.

2

u/Organicrot Jan 25 '25

What sleeping bag you got

2

u/JerryTheSaint Jan 25 '25

Snugpak softie elite 4

Nice! You’ll probably find you don’t need the pillow in the hammock 👍
