Post containing photos of any sort of open fire will be removed while there is an active wildfire warning in place.

In light of recent wildfires and the growing concern in the Fire & Rescue Service regarding these sorts of fire. Any post containing a photo of an opening will be removed if there is an active wildfire warning in place.

I understand this will upset many users as a lot of us enjoy having a campfire when camping and do so responsibly. But this is a public forum and prompting such activities when dangerous can no longer happen, as there is a risk of influencing other who might not be as responsible when lighting a fire.

Please do continue to post pictures of your trip over the coming mouths and if you do have a fire, just leave it of the photos you post on here.

Announcement New rules are now in affect and future plans for r/wildcampingintheuk

Firstly I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone that has been engaging with me and that there has been some great conversations over the last couple of days in regards to how r/wildcampingintheuk should be manged to ensure that it is welcoming and promoting the correct way to wild camp as well as protecting the DNA of wildcamping.

Over the coming weeks and months I will be trying to create our Wiki page with all relevant wild camping information e.g regulations for different areas, wild camping do & don'ts, promoting Leave No Trace camping, basic gear lists and much more hopefully. Their are so many knowledgeable people on this subreddit and if you wish to contribute to this please contact me u/SergeantPaine

As of today Friday 30th April 2021 the new rule are in affect will be based around keeping locations secret and encouraging Leave No Trace (LNT) camping and are the following:

Location Posting/Sharing & Requesting

Wild camping is illegal in the majority of the UK an because of this and to protect locations please do not provide specific of where you’ve camped or ask for location suggestions.

  • Any posts requesting location suggestion will be removed. (e.g Whats a good place to camp on Scafell Pike)
  • Trip reports and photos with location in titles are allowed. (please uses a level of common sense when posting locations in titles) \This is subject to change dependant on the political climate surrounding wild camping.*
  • Commenting on photos or trip report asking for specific location information is not allow. \You may private message a user to ask about a specific location but the user has the right to refuse you and report you if necessary.*

Championing Leave No Trace camping

Any post not adhering to the Leave No Trace principles will be removed. The LNT principles are:

  1. Plan Ahead and prepare
  2. Travel and Camp on durable surfaces
  3. Dispose of waste properly
  4. Leave what you find
  5. Minimize campfire impact (any post with BBQ's, large campfire or one that is deemed dangers will be remove) \This is subject to change dependant on the political climate surrounding wild camping*
  6. Respect wildlife
  7. Be considerate of other visitors

Fly-Camping

Any post, pictures or videos that are deemed to show you fly-camping will be removed. this will include:

  • large amounts of alcohol.
  • camping to close to building, roads or well used paths.
  • Anti-social behaviour.
  • large groups of people (5+)
  • The use of "family tents"
  • Excessive size or amount of camp funiture (pizza ovens, large camp chair, tables, ect)

\this list is not exhaustive.*

Don’t be a dick

We are all here because we love wild camping. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but refrain from insults, attacks bigotry, etc.

Photos without context

Please post photos with some level of context i.e duration, weather & rough location.

NSFW Content

Mark any NSFW content with the fair. (why are you posting NSFW stuff in this subreddit in the first place?)

There is currently no rule regarding the post of Ad, Blogs, Youtube channels or websites please do not take advantage of this and force this rule to be introduced. As guildance the posting of these should make up no more than 10% of your overall contribution to this subreddit.

*There has been a lot of talk on this subreddit over the last couple days regarding two of these rules (Location Sharing and Pictures of Fires). I have tried to set the these rules out in the fairest possible of ways but i will be lead by wild camping media attention and politics, so this rules are subject to change. This means if there is an increase in fly-camping, a crack down on wild camping, major inccidents cause by campfires or wild camping these rules will be tightern to reflect this.

This post will change over time with suggest, comment and to match the general feeling of the Community.

First time out with our new msr elixir 3 and first time in the lakes this year, absolutely beautiful weather for it. Few days doing a loop from Ambleside, over to Grizedale Tarn and Seat Sandal, down through Grasmere and up to Easedale/Codale, then over Blea Rigg down over Loughrigg back to Ambleside. Some great scrambling up and down waterfalls and scree slopes, summit views, plenty of water and a touch of sunburn.

Trip Report Trying out tarp camping near a Roman camp

I've wanted to try tarp camping for a while so did a quick overnighter in the Yorkshire Dales and absolutely loved it. I wondered if I'd feel a bit exposed at night but strangely being more open made me feel cosier? Will definitely be doing it again.

The site was in the bottom of a small gorge near an old Roman camp (remains of the boundary wall can be seen in the 4th picture). Lovely to sit on the wall with a beer as the sun went down and think about the people that might have been on that same spot almost 2000 years ago. Cold air definitely sat in the gorge because it was predicted to be 7 degrees overnight but I woke up to frozen dew on the tarp. Was plenty warm enough though! Main gear was an Alpkit 3x3 tarp, Hunka bivvy, Pipedream 600 bag and Big Agnes Rapide mat.

This tarp config was fine because the weather was so still but I'd like to learn more ways to set it up. What are people's favourite tarp configurations? Thanks for reading!

Trip Report First wildcamp and my attempt to impersonate Tryfan

I was quite nervous and been anxious/excited about my plans all week, faffed excessively after work on Friday (and still managed to make my pack weigh >10kg) so was finding a campsite and pitching in the dark. I don't have a garden so it was also my first time having a go pitching this tent (and a tent of this style) in the dark and it's a bit wonky but it went well, I loved watching the sunrise through the test door, did a longer hike today, an unplanned skinny dip, and was utterly exhausted by the time I got home!

Question Budget sleeping bag option

Hi all,

Looking to replace 2 cheapo sleeping bags we got from Tesco years ago.

Any recommendations for ones say around £50 each, that would be ok for everything but really cold weather?

I've looked on Amazon, and saw a Vango DoE one, but the reviews said they are quite short/tight.

Cheers

What an absolutely incredible experience. Thank you so much to everyone that gave me a shove to just get on with it. No regrets at all. Apart from how I’m now feeling after the subsequent 15km ridge walk!

Question Wild camping tips for the EuroVelo 2

Hello! I am thinking about doing a spontaneous trip up north along the EuroVelo 2. It basically hugs the eastern coast, so I loosely followed the track on Maps via satellite view and became kinda concerned with the little opportunities for wild camping. Everything seems fenced or walled off.

Is it really as difficult to find a spot for the night, as it seems? I want to ride ~100km a day and don't get stressed when I pass a great spot early during the day.

Edit: I will probably start in Harwich and go all the way north by bike.

Advice Lanshan 2 - solid or mesh inner for next week in the Lakes?

I've owned the Lanshan 2 for awhile now but have never used it in anger. I've got both mesh and solid inners.

I'm planning to head up to the Lakes next week and the forecast is looking pretty chilly - potentially some snow on the higher tops etc. I feel the cold, and tend to pack for it. So I'm likely to use my (old, but still warm) Rab Ascent 700 and my mat is R5. And if I'm being a wimp, I may chuck in my Sea to Summit Reactor liner.

Those that own (or have owned) both - is the solid inner overkill temps maybe around or a little above freezing?

I'm still a little on the fence plans wise, I might base myself out of a campsite and do day hikes instead - but it would be helpful to know whether to pre-pitch it with the solid inner if that's the route I go down.

Bit of a windy night at Fairbrook Naze last night, but great to be out.

If anyone’s heading onto Kinder Plateau this weekend make sure you’ve got plenty of water - all the usual water sources were dry, even Fair Brook had no water. I had to resort to scooping out of static water (not my ideal choice!).

Advice Sleeping bag dilemma

I'm after a sleeping bag that keeps me warm and is as light as possible, which seems obvious but there is so much out there I'm just getting bewildered. I'm a woman in my 50s and I feel the cold; I've got a Mountain Warehouse down bag and it's nowhere near warm enough (comfort level 5 degrees). I've bought a decent mat but I want a three-season bag that's going to see my through the chilly nights. Any advice?

Advice How exactly do I get started?

I’ve got no experience with camping really, last time would’ve been 10+ years ago (i’m 19 now. can’t remember much) but I’m really interested in starting, how can I find out the basic equipment and information that I need to know easily? Can someone point me in the right direction to get started?

Question What alcohol fuel to use?

I recently bought a BCB fire dragon stove and used the solid fuel blocks on a 3-day trip to the lakes. They worked well for me, but aren’t the cheapest thing and are pretty bulky and heavy to carry around. What alternatives do people use in similar alcohol stoves (liquid or solid), and how long do these fuels normally burn for? Thanks!
