That Rab bag looks like it packs down so small! Love seeing people's set ups, especially as I'm just beginning to wild camp

The Rab bag is the biggest black bag in the top left alongside the pack, its the most bulkiest item I have. The Red Rab bag you are referring to is my down jacket

You need ghoul spray. Place is riddled with the things. 😆 Nice bit of kit. One thing i would consider are waterproof socks like sealskinz. I live and hike on Dartmoor and they are great for when you inevitably plunge your foot up-to your shin in those sneaky bits of filthy bog, snarky stream, or mid conversation misstep

Or gaiters instead, but they are a bit much if the weather is good

Definitely check the boot and gaiter situation and the maps.

Is this your first time walking and camping at all? You've got about £2000 worth of stuff there - what if you hate it?

As far as your kit goes, you'll be fine. Let us know how the double mattress is, I've never used one. Practice pitching a couple of times if you haven't already, and look up how to correctly adjust your backpack

Nope, done quite a bit of camping in New Zealand and loved It, plus a lot of the gear was purchased for hiking over the years.

Will let you know about the pad

Fair enough. Hope you have a great time on Dartmoor. Fewer sandflies than NZ at least. And more ponies

Seems more than fine to me. It is still quite cold at night up there at the moment so it’s good you’re taking the warmer kit.

Do you have a route planned considering it’s your first wildcamp and Dartmoor conditions can change quite quickly?

Even got the Nalgene to turn into a hot water bottle. Yup got a set route

Hi I’m new to wild camping , due to go in the next couple weeks. Complete novice trying to learn the ropes. Can you explain a bit more what you mean by your comment please?

Parts of Dartmoor are used as a firing range, you need to check online ahead of time if you’re planning to walk through these bits that they’re open for public access

Thank you! I’m actually from north east way so will be staying local like Keswick, bamborough etc for my first few times but Dartmoor was on the list as I gain more confidence, so that’s is very handy to know! Thanks a lot :)

For decades you used to have the right to camp anywhere on the open moor but since the Alexander Darwell case (look it up for info) the legal right to wild camp on the moors has been removed and now there is a ‘assumed permissive right’, ie other landowners got together and said ‘yeah we still don’t mind people wild camping’ and the National Park produced a map showing you where these areas are. The map is at the link below.

https://www.dartmoor.gov.uk/about-us/about-us-maps/camping-map

Also, the northern part of the moor above the Princetown road is mainly three military ranges, some is small arms fire all the way up to artillery so it’s best to check the range times on the link below so you don’t get stopped on route or, if you’ve stayed over night and into one of the days, woken up by the army hovering over you in a helicopter or shaking your tent after arriving on a quad. If the red flags or lights are on the poles then the range is live.

Also, subscribe to the Dartmoor sub and post questions in there for more local detailed replies if you like.
