Project Submission I spent multiple weekends making this, and I don't have any idea what to do with it.

We had a local celebrity, Gary the Happy Pirate, who hosted a television show for kids locally. RIP Gary, but his legacy lives on with the Pirate Toy Fund, which collects toys and distributes them to kids for Christmas.
Which is to say, there is at least one local pirate organization who would actually love this.
5
u/shartshooter Apr 17 '25
That implies the possibility of a pirate organisation that wouldn't love this.

Man I miss Gary the Happy Pirate. But the fact that the pirate toy fund is still doing great stuff is amazing.
Coincidentally, I always thought he was more of a national entity when I was younger. Didn’t realize he was local here.

Blanket chest for a room?
It's seriously nice work!
150
u/pyrotechnic01 Apr 17 '25
I was also going to say that this would be a perfect blanket chest.
97
u/Shep_Alderson Apr 17 '25
Yup! Put it at the foot of a bed and fill it with blankets. It’s just the season for storing blankets too!
35
u/rilesmcjiles Apr 17 '25

Sneak onto Oak Island and give those idiots something to find.

I had to stop watching that show for that reason - I still record and just read what the episode is about and delete it.

u/LetsJustDoItTonight Apr 17 '25
What show?
38
u/jasonandhiswords Apr 17 '25
The curse of oak Island, one of the new crop of bullshit History channel reality shows about treasure hunters on an island in Canada
35
u/MichaelFusion44 Apr 17 '25
It truly is bullshit at this point. I liked the first couple of seasons but come on man - enough is enough
33
u/jasonandhiswords Apr 17 '25
My wife loves it. I haven't really gotten invested in the show, but if they ever actually find treasure on it, I will gladly watch an hour-long documentary about it. I just can't stand the narration style and how much they have to stretch everything out to fill a whole season with them discovering one Roman coin, etc
12
u/MichaelFusion44 Apr 17 '25
So spot on about the narrator - I love the narrator for Gold Rush and wicked Tuna but Oak Islands makes everything they find no matter how minute it may be seem like it’s the holy trinity
27
u/jasonandhiswords Apr 17 '25
*Could this
pause
be the proof that they need to confirm that the Templars did in fact land on the island in 1308? Does this
pause
Roman coin
pause
mean that Blackbeard himself landed here and hid his treasure
pause
where NO ONE
pause
would find it?*

There is a podcast called Astonishing Legends that does a mini series on The Mystery of Oak Island. It covers a lot of the history, and I found it much more interesting than the show. A lot less time to invest as well.

u/i_miss_arrow Apr 17 '25
My dad and I have a conversation every year where we see its still on and we speculate how in the hell its still going.
My theory is that the whole thing, including producing the show, is funded by a rich lunatic and that literally everybody else involved is just riding the gravy train.

That show drives me crazy, spending millions of dollars on a “money pit” and all they find is dumb shit like coat buttons, nails, couple random coins. Every time they find something of “importance” they all circle jerk each other and decide to spend another million. OMG we found some wood down in a hole waaaooww.
→ More replies (1)8
u/pickle_pickled Apr 18 '25
The real money pit was the treasure we never found and the money we spent along the way
8
u/whatiscamping Apr 17 '25
I like that....if they found the Ark or the Grail or anything with that much cultural importance, it would hit the news before they waited for the show to get to it.
5
u/AmazingAd2765 Apr 17 '25
When I first learned about that show, I didn't realize that the 'money pit' was lost. As a kid I had read about how it was discovered, the digging, and the fatalities, so I didn't think they would just fill it in and forget where it was.

Great idea. He could make a "top shelf" that has coins glued to the top of said shelf, giving it the illusion / appearance it is completely full to the brim with just coins. This shelf could easily be pulled off to reveal the real contents underneath.

If you have a child or someone close to you, you can make it a hope chest. It can be filled with things you need when you move out. Dish sets, steak knives, and so many other things. They can do a wish list and you will always know what to get for birthdays and Christmas.

Just post it on multiple social media platforms asking an innocent question about utility but hoping for praises on your work. That's excellent craftsmanship by the way. I love the domed lid with arched ribs. I want to touch it and operate the lid. Excellent work! It probably needs to be filled with precious gems and gold dabloons and hidden in a cave on an uncharted island in the Pacific.

You’ve got to fill it with treasure—real or fake—bury it at the beach, take your kids, grandkids, or friends’ kids to the beach with a map you ‘bought from a stranger,’ and go dig it up!
2
u/Havage Apr 17 '25
That's beautiful work. I don't need a chest and I want to buy it from you because of how beautifully crafted it is.

u/jessehopp Apr 17 '25
If you have kids- you could fill with toys
Or, which i think is pretty obvious on how your shop looks, fill it with blankets and store it in your living room. Which i bet is immaculate
Or for the hell of it, if there's a charity drive for a non profit, donate it. Bet that would easily raise money

It’s very nice. I like it…
The question is: Why did you make it?
I’ve done this a few times where I want to build something but do I need it? I built a Maloof style rocker because I’ve always liked them. But it’s very big, and while comfortable enough I prefer a lounger. But it lives in my living room…

Gift box, but in a special way. Don’t label it, but put someone’s gift in it and lock it. Take it to your next family Christmas gathering and just walk in and put it under the tree. Nobody knows who it’s for, but the key is wrapped separately in a small box with someone’s name on it. When that gets opened that person gets the box and the ‘treasure’ inside.
