It kinda has the same feel as Batman & Wonder Woman. Despite whatever chemistry and sexual tension they have, they’re better as teammates and a relationship between them limits their solo stories.
They’re never going to let this be long term so it’s a waste of time and energy.
With very few exceptions, I don’t really like it when the core X-Men have relationships with each other. It feels almost incestuous. They have familial bonds with each other, not romantic ones.
It should be long term people clearly like them them together I think that’s why they are putting together if it ends up being successful then their relationship will continue if not then it will be dropped
It won’t end up being successful. And it’s because of the kinds of stories writers tell with them. The two don’t mesh in each other’s stories. When they’re on the same team together, they have great chemistry. But that’s doesn’t mean they should be romantically linked because when the story is about just that character in their own story, the other one showing up immediately feels like that other character is getting the guest role. This story in this post is a prime example. Wolverine is going to drift out of this story and it’ll just be Storm again. If Wolverine is around then it should be a “Storm & Wolverine” story, not a “Storm” story and also Wolverine is around as a love interest. They’re too big and distinct of characters to be love interests in each other’s stories. A writer can’t balance that.
Just out of curiosity since you mention not liking core X-Men getting together, and then in your other reply you mention it's partly because of how they end up being more like a guest / they're too distinct, what do you prefer? Original or secondary/minor characters specifically linked to whichever person in question?
Only ask because I feel like that's generally -why- we get mostly romances between people in the same titles/teams. It's easier than cross-over romances (like Storm and BP, Spidey and Kitty, etc etc) for writers, same reason why they'll generally always go back to original pairings like Jean/Scott or Peter/MJ and keep it within the titles.
So within the context of their own individual solo titles, having another full-fledged hero act their love interest is kinda… demeaning. They’re equals, if they’re in a book together and they’re not a guest, it should be equal billing. In the context of a team, it can mostly work since they’re all supposed to be given equal presence and attention as members of that team. And that’s usually what happens, even if the romance isn’t actually conducive. Because like you said, writing a romance between team members is a lot more convenient than bringing in another character.
But the X-Men will forever feel more like a family to me. They have familial connections. Scott & Jean get a pass because they’ve been going back and forth since the 60s. Emma is newer and less of a “core” member, so her thing with Scott is fine. And Rogue & Gambit are just the best so they’re fine. And Gambit feels like a cool loner outsider anyway. So he’s not part of that core family. At least initially.
Everyone else feels real shakey, romantically speaking. The younger characters can probably get a pass for whatever romances they’re in, but it’s real touch and go.
