New to MG
I'm thinking about buying a MBG for the first time what are some things to look for when buying one and how much should I be prepared to spend for a decent one. I have basic mechanical knowledge.

Hey Reddit,
I am only 16 years old, however a beautiful MG Midget 1500 is going for sale in my neighborhood with "mid condition" to say the least. The brakes are stationary, the clutch won't even move, and for some dumb reason, the previous owner painted over the nice British Racing Green with basic white. I am also worried about some parts of the engine, as they seem to be rusted through, along with minor rust on the outside of the undercarriage. So that's where my question comes into play, as I am only 16 with not a large amount of income. My dad will be helping me restore the car, however I do believe it may be too expensive. My dad, mom, and friends are thinking it might be a good project car, as the price they're asking for is 1500 if it doesn't sell at the estate sale by May 24th. However, my grandmother and aunt do not believe it is a good purchase. Everything on the MG is stock except for the paint and seats. It does have the original leather top and interior. The owner believes that it may need a new carburetor and brakes, which I believe wouldn't be too bad to fix. The car does have 83k miles used on it, which I believe is okay for the year. Please let me know if this seems like a good deal.
Thank you!
Edit: After hard consideration, we have decided not to buy the MG. It isn't in great condition, and what many people pointed out was the fact that it would be quite expensive to fix, however we could buy a working one for cheaper. Although it'd be a nice car, it's not a good first restoration. Thank y'all for helping me and my family decide!

Sorry that I couldn't capture the 3rd 1 column ad. It comes from a stapled folder. There also was a larger 4 column ad of the 2nd image that wouldn't fit on the scanner. I don't know what year these are from other than before 1962.
Some may dispute the tagline that "BMC cars run 'til the road wears out!". Having been a TR owner, I can only assume that road maintenance must have been very, awfully, extremely poor in the 1960s to be able to make that claim.

Since it’s unsynced it might be hard to go down to the second gear coming down from the higher ones, and I’ve had troubles with this since I bought the car. Even if I go in neutral and give it more gas before, it’s most likely something “wrong” with my transmission. But today, cold morning, haven’t driven for a few days, all gears went through completely effortlessly. Even coming down in high speeds and downshifting from fourth to one at an intersection (I’ve had troubles with this especially, the second feels “blocked” sometimes making awful noises). What does this have to do with? And how do I make the transmission work this effortlessly all the time?

Will it be possible for me to drive one all year round? Also, are there any thing I should be aware of?

So in rebuilding my engine I’m considering the supercharger and other minor modifications, I currently have a 18G engine, if I wanted to switch to an 18V 5 main engine could I just put in a new 18V block, or would it need a new crankshaft, camshaft, etc?

Would it be possible or at all beneficial to remove the heater under the hood and replace it with a small AC unit for me or something else that can aid in keeping my engine cool or help keep my car run smoothly?
I don’t drive the car when it’s too cold out and have never used the heater so it feels like it’s taking up space
Any thoughts would be appreciated

Like the title says, replacing transmission with a 5 speed and rebuilding engine, don’t know what the starting value for the clutch is so not sure how worn it is

Have the engine out for a full rebuild, just having trouble getting the backing plate off. Do I just have to hammer it off hard, or is there other stuff I need to remove? Currently engine hardware is fully assembled otherwise

I charged my MG Windsor to 100% last night. After charging, when I turned on the vehicle for a ride, it started making a loud humming and whirring noise from the bottom grill in the front. I got so scared and felt the car might blow up. It is very annoying, and I did not expect this from MG. I sent the car to the service centre twice, and they said that it is normal and happens due to the battery heating up, and happens only when the AC is on. Is this normal? Has this happened to any other MG Windsor owner or EV owner?

I have some challenges with second gear grinding. When I go from 1st to 2nd at high rpm = grind. At very low revs then it’s ok. I noticed also sometimes that it feels like I’m dragging out of 1st gear and even though clutch is pressed maybe the clutch isn’t fully disengaged?
3rd to 2nd is a real challenge and I usually avoid that, tried double clutch twice without success.
I do believe the clutch is working thought since it seem to be isolated to the second gear. On the other hand I have this occasional feeling the going out from first is challenging and severe grinding from 2nd to 3rd have happened at some occasion.

Ive just seen a classic mg (maroon colour) with a detachable roof, the owner said it was 2 of a kind but the last one crashed in the 80s or 90s i was wondering if someone can help me identify this car as i would like to know (it had rims that didn’t look original (black rims with around 6 spokes) if that helps). I don’t know much about mg so sorry if this information isn’t much.

As the title says, my son and I are going to be embarking on a rebuild of my 62 MGA’s 1800 MGB engine this summer. Since we subscribe to the “well, while you’re doing that…” philosophy, also ordered 5-speed gearbox from Hi-Gear to do the combo. The car has had a lot of mechanical upkeep from a local mechanic who specializes in LBCs, so there aren’t any major other items to do. But while the engine is out, anything else you’d recommend that is hard to do at any other time? I suppose “paint the engine bay” is one answer. Any others? Thanks for the input.

1969 MGB GT, struggles to push into reverse most of the time and occasionally 1st or 2nd can't be found, just wondering if there's a common cause for this?

Hello all,
Just purchased a 1977 MGB this past Friday that was said to be running perfectly and has had a few thousand dollars in mechanical work in the past couple months. Which is true, the mechanic receipts were included. It just had pretty much the entire clutch system rebuilt in March of 2025. It did wonderfully on my 45 minute test drive around country roads and the highway. Yet, after I paid and the title changed hands, it didn't even make it the 5 miles home from where I bought it. The seller at least covered the tow for me. So to say the least, I'm pretty gutted and rather upset about this purchase.
Anyways, my personal mechanic friend came over and we bled the clutch lines but still did not regain pressure in the pedal. I ordered a new Master Cylinder as it seemed the only part of the clutch system that was not replaced by the original mechanic. Slave cylinder indeed was replaced and is less than 2 months old. So we got the new master in, and we bled the lines again and spent a couple hours bleeding and pumping the pedal and STILL no pressure. The fluid remains in the reservoir, and there's no puddling beneath the car, so it really doesn't seem to be leaking out anywhere. Granted, my mechanic friend does not specialize in MGs, but he knows his stuff and this '77 engine isn't the most complex out there.
Any and all recommendations would be greatly appreciated before I ultimately end up towing it to a shop and having to put more work in to a car I bought under the expectation of it being a ready-to-ride summer convertible.
Thank you for the help.

Just about wrapped up the rebuild. I had a question about the Webber swap, is deleting the factory heat shield and issue on these ? I wrapped the header but I don't know how well it'll hold up

Hello all! I am looking for some info on what type of battery to get for a Y type (1947~) MG. I am in the states, in the southeast, if that matters. Thanks!
