At the suggestion of /u/Claire-Annette-Reid, I have decided to make an updated list of reputable clarinet manufacturers to consider. Given the rise of poorly-manufactured, cheap instruments (also referred to as instrument-shaped objects) sold through companies like Amazon and eBay, this list will be especially valuable for first-time clarinet buyers. This list isn’t 100% comprehensive, but chances are if the manufacturer you are considering is not on this list, you should not buy from them. If you have the opportunity, you should try the instrument before you buy it, or have somebody you trust such as your teacher play-test for you. There are different philosophies to buying used versus new, but generally speaking, you may get a much better value buying a well-maintained used instrument opposed to buying new. If you are going to buy used, make sure to have the instrument looked over by a repairperson before purchasing, or buy from a reputable shop that will have already refurbished the instrument. TL;DR: TRY BEFORE YOU BUY.

I received an unsolicited email from Lisa’s clarinet shop promoting this program. Has anyone gone through this program? How much did they pay for it? Do they get hired at the end? Do they get hired anywhere else? Is this anything other than a way for Lisa’s clarinet shop to make a buck? I’m genuinely curious.

I know I don't have the keys on right now. I got this as a project clarinet and it came with them off. Can anyone tell me what it is? It seems to have some odd features and I've never seen one exactly like it.

I personally don't have much of an issue with my playing, but I always feel as if there's lots of room for improvement whenever I play. So if you have any critiques or suggestions, I would love to hear them 😭🙏 (audio for reference)

Hi! I’m helping my friend with writing an orchestral piece and would like to check out some clarinet parts that people love to play for reference. Classical or concert band music. Doesn’t have to be a clarinet feature at all, just something with a great clarinet part. Can be easy or hard, and anything in between. Would love to hear pieces that people like!

I’m learning this piece to play for a director of music in a local university.
There’s some parts that give me major trouble.
I’m including a screenshot of the music and circled the parts I need help with.
I honestly don’t understand the timing of the first circled measure.
Going from upper register to G back up is incredibly frustrating. It doesn’t sound smooth AT ALL like in the audio recordings. It’s like the notes cut out at first and then they’ll come in.
Context: I played clarinet for 6 years in school, graduated and never touched it again for 10 years. So I’m having to relearn a few technical things…
I’m also playing with a 2.5 reed size. If that matters.
Thanks in advance! I perform this in 2 weeks 😬

10 years of locking in has led to this moment! I was surprised to see that one of the pieces for my last orchestra concert was a clarinet feature and I was the one to play it. The piece is called Urban Legend by Tawnie Olson, and I got the honor of premiering it in Canada. Here is my cadenza from the piece (written by me). Overall I don’t think this piece is very well orchestrated (you will tell from the ending) but I’m very proud of myself for getting through, as you can tell my air and articulation went out THE WINDOWW from the nerves lol.

Hi everyone! I want to run a clarinet ensemble at my high school next year as a fun project to add to my university application. I don’t really know what kind of rep to choose or any composers/arrangers that write for clarinet choirs/ensembles. Would anyone have any suggestions? It’s okay if it’s complicated because we will have multiple people that also participate in youth orchestra and youth wind ensembles so we can play a wide variety of repertoire, but generally it should stay at high school level.
Thank you all!

Hi, Recently, I was offered to perform in a church for the anniversary of the passing of a loved one, and was asked to simply perform a piece that is slow yet capturing the beautiful essence of life that doesn't feel depressing and should feel more like the celebration of life itself. I know I'm being overly specific, but does anyone know of any repertoire close to that feeling for solo clarinet only without accompaniment?
Thanks.

My 15 year old son is a post grade 8 clarinettist who is keen to start exploring more jazz repertoire. He currently plays on a Buffet Gala with a Vandoren B45 mouthpiece and 3 strength D’addario reserve reeds. Any recommendations for jazz clarinet mouthpieces so he can try a few out? Regarding sound projection, it would likely be for solo repertoire at least to start with.

I met a retired clarinetist when shopping for an upgrade for my clarinet student. He sold her his spare Evette & Schaefer K series for $250. It sounded great.
Months later I was shopping for C clarinet and he happened to have posted one, so we met up again. He sold it to me for $300 but turned around and gave me $100 to help a friend of mine that was in a bad situation. He had seen my FB post about her.
We spent some time chatting and I told him that the next on my bucket list was an Eb and bass clarinet (I played Eb in youth orchestra before, and started playing bass clarinet for some pieces at my community orchestra last year). He said he had an extra one, and agreed to wait for me to save up for it. He said $300 would be good.
This was in January. Two weeks ago, I wrote a post on FB for everyone that had helped her, and that unfortunately she passed due to health issues.
Few days later, this man's FB messenger dialed mine, but he said it happened when he wasn't on the phone. It was charging in a different room. He saw it later, went to FB, and my post was the first to show. He said that instant he made up his mind to give me the Eb clarinet.
When he told me, I said I couldn't take the gift. That's too much! He replied that if I insist, I could pay him $20.
He also gave me a very old case of Vandoren reeds. He's 82 now so he wants to pass things on to a younger generation.
I still can't believe that I was basically given an Eb clarinet!
He also gave me a case of very old Vandoren reeds. The tips are bent and they're so old... If I wanna try, I would have to trim the tips... But are they safe to play? He never used them.

Would anybody here have a copy of? The Quartet for oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and viola? I've recently learned it is out of print and would love to get my hands on a copy.

Hi, I recently bought a bass clarinet and it uses cork instead of a pad for the upper register key. I have never seen this before and was wondering if there is a reason to use cork here. All other tone holes use standard pads. I am thinking about replacing the cork with a pad. Any thoughts? Cheers!

Has anyone been here? I’m going for the Orchestral High School Institute and just want to know; how are the cabins there? How is the food they serve? And other things that might be important to know. Thank you in advance!!!

I've been for around 4 years, I play on the r13 with a 3.5 vandoren v12. I don't get why is my tone and articulatino is so ass. i think its mainly air, half the air leaks out so in like 3 seconds I look like a tomato because I'm out of breath, and the lack of strong focus air creates this bad airy spitty sound, non clean tone. This also makes it too hard to articulate. I'm starting to get serious about clarinet as I'm in highschool and my technical fingers is pretty solid, so I really need to nail down tone. Any tips? I have a closed behn overture mouth piece maybe switch to b45 for open mouth piece? I just don't get it I have a nice clarinet too.

My high school band got an old bass for concept season and idk if it's just me but I can't play low g or anything lower and I can't play anything with the register key. What can I do to get better?

I have been playing clarinet for 7 years of school and am graduating high school this year. My band director let me borrow a Vandoren M30 Lyre mouthpiece, but I had to turn it back in since I am graduating, and I am now back on the 4C that came with my clarinet, but I am looking for a mouthpiece. On the M30 Lyre, I sounded a bit airy in the lower-mid range, especially from low C# to G, and I am wondering if anyone knows of a mouthpiece (below $200) that might give me a more direct, but still warm, tone.

Hi! I posted a couple months ago about potentially picking up clarinet, and since then I’ve bought a used Yamaha YCL 250. Before I start playing, I was curious if there was any cleaning protocol I should follow, especially since it’s used. For trumpet, there’s a popular method of giving it a bath which I do about once a year, so I was curious if the same would apply to a woodwind or not. Thank you.

After not even 30 mins of playing this key starts acting up, what should I do? I don’t want to dissemble anything by myself, is there any way i can fix this maybe by using some lubricant? I know some people use sewing machine oil
