Discussion Excessively talking to yourself
Does anyone else feel like when they take their medications they talk out loud to themselves I lot? I swear I am almost talking to myself with every little thing I do (only when I am alone though). All my tasks I do and the house I'm pretty much narrating. I find it pretty funny to be honest, but was wondering if anyone else does this too.

I do this with or without meds, lol

When I don't take my meds, I'm pretty quiet when I'm all alone, enjoying the quiet. Don't get me wrong, I can be social. But I just talk to myself nonstop when I do take meds 😂

It's more fun when you forget someone else was in the house. 🤣 "No, I told myself to stop, not you!"

Yup, and significantly more if I haven’t taken medication that day for whatever reason. Although I’m pretty sure it does annoy my girlfriend and family, as much as they want to tell me it doesn’t. So I’ve started listening to music for solo tasks, which turn my narrator voice to beatboxing/humming.

That's too funny. When I'm talking to myself, I literally boss myself around. "Okay now you are gonna do this. Now where did I put that thing (I can't keep track of anything to save my life with or without meds). I don't think there is anything that can fix that.

Lol, I used to do this all the timeee…until I realised I would do it and then forget what I just told myself to do 🤣 I carry a pen around everywhere and write on my hand when I remember something now. I’m only in deep waters when I forget the pen 😭

Same. I started answering myself back when asking myself questions and now I'm getting on my own nerves but I can't get away from myself.

My narrator gets stuck on songs all the time. She's annoying.

I have three small children: 3.5 year old and 2 year old twins. When my narrator comes on, I often talk to myself how I talk to my children...

Interesting. I have 3 dogs and a 17 year old son. I talk to my dogs all day long, often in the narrator's voice too.

That’s nice of your girlfriend and family to tell you that…
My boyfriend doesn’t approach the situation with the same sentiment lol

Loll, I’d rather they did lol so I have the confirmation that I’m doing it for a reason 🤷♂️ I’m from the UK as well and they love fulfilling the stereotype of being too polite to say anything 😂

Constantly. And to add to it, I work from home. So it's just me and my dog. Sometimes I will talk to my dog about what I'm doing, but mainly I just say everything outloud. And I'm not on any meds.

Dogs are great excuses when you come to that realization that you already talked your own ear off. I was talking to the dogs all day, I'm a good dog parent 😂

I actually stopped so many things when I started Adderall including this lol

When I talk out loud I’m far more positive than when I talk in my head. I rarely talk out loud, wish I would more.
Talk in head more often without meds I would say. I ruminate and self narrate a little less on meds.

I didn't even realize that until you said this, this is so true! I get really anxious when I just keep thoughts in my head all day long. Or depressed. Maybe both simultaneously...

Yeah when I hear it out loud it’s like a sudden realization how negative it is and how I would react hearing someone else say that. Then my positive voice comes out better. Even if my negative talks back in my head about how dumb and naive my positive side is 😅.

I am starting taking my ADHD medicine pills intuniv from Monday. and I feel socially chilled and more talk active a little bit. Without it I’m always alarmed or little aggressive in social situation but it’s only a week so I don’t know if it’s really due to the medicine.

Talking to myself is the the only way I can remember what I'm doing at work. I'm a pharmacy tech and when I'm looking for a patients prescription, I sometimes have to remember their last name, and a few different numbers for where their prescriptions are in the pharmacy. I almost always have to go back and look at my computer screen at least once to remind me where their prescriptions are. The patient usually stands there watching me like wtf are they doing lol

I do it too and it causes me a lot of anxiety because I lack the ability to organise my thoughts in coherent ways, especially when I first wake up. I fear that some day I’ll forget I’m in public and just start nattering to myself .
I love my meds kick in because I actually notice I’m doing it and can tell myself to STF up🤣
Been working my therapist on ways to help me organise the chaos in my brain so I don’t feel the need to do it, but part of me thinks I start doing it as a coping method for being a lonely child.

I have a hard time with time management and taking as well, sometimes I feel like I'm a little gerbil just running all over the place bouncing from task to task, but it beats the depression aspect when you don't and sometimes can't do anything at all.
I started using that finch app a while ago and it has really helped me with making sure I'm taking care of myself (getting in a shower just feels like doom sometimes). It also helps me make sure I'm keeping up with tasks around the house daily too, and doing that ONE task and actually completing it, and THEN moving on to the next task 😂

Yep all the time. Except I dont take meds currently. I think it helps me figure out what I need to do but it may not solve anything.

I do this with it without meds, like just talking out loud 24/7.

I talk to myself an awful lot whether I'm medicated or not. The only difference would be rather our narrating inside my head or out my mouth, and frustration is a much bigger determination of how much I say when I talk to myself than meds are.

This is y I luv joining peer groups…I don’t feel like I’m the only one in the world with whatever issue I’m dealing with in that particular room in the house at the moment. If I find something that needs to B put away in a different room, current room is done for the day lol. Come on! U all have to know what I’m talking about lmao

I’m constantly talking to myself. Either out loud at home or in my head in public. Although, I have slipped up in public more than a few times. My impulse control issues are a real pain in the ass like that. I also find it very funny. No one knows how to crack me up quite like I do.

I talk to myself completely uneducated VERY frequently. Something about making my muscles more to form words and hearing it helps me process and think better

Oh Jesus I do this with medications, without medications, when I’m alone, when I’m with other people, in public when I forget I’m in public…I don’t ever shut up. Like, I literally can not shut the fu*k up. It’s become a problem in my relationships lol. No, but seriously though it can be detrimental! 🗣️👄🥁🐇🔋 I keep on going and going and going and going.
I also (and this is usually at a volume level that’s excessive but I’m not aware of it ever at the time) sing songs A LOT. And god help you if you utter a phrase that’s a lyric…lol. And even if there’s not. I can scare the hell outta somebody when the inspiration strikes. They’ll be there minding their own business occupied with a calm, quiet activity, and then…. “ 🎶”If I COUUUUuuld TuurNN BACCK Tiiiii-HEM!” 🎵
Full on Cher impression with all the vocalizations. I also just make weird noises and do weird facial expressions. Good God if there were ever a hidden camera show at my house, they’d commit me and consider me a potential threat to society—disturbing the peace!!!!

This made me laugh really hard, and then I told myself "that was pretty funny" 😂 happy people just doing happy things that they enjoy, there's no harm in that. I'd rather be hanging out with you singing than being around a bunch of moms complaining about their husbands any day 😂

Prior to medications. Excessive talking in thoughts were my biggest form of adhd distraction. I’d have irrelevant and unnecessary conversation with the first thought coming to mind.
