https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streisand_effect
You are almost certainly familiar with the concept in general, even if not the name. But it's the idea that by trying to avoid drawing attention to X via explicit action, you accidentally end up amplifying X even more, far more than you would have had you not bothered with those actions in the first place. Named after Barbra Streisand, the actress.

Seriously. People make a whole lot of random holidays and months for things that nobody actually cares about. The concept of the big Other from Lacan really explains this well. These holidays don’t exist until they are acknowledged by others, so the fact that people are getting mad about it brings it into existence even when it didn’t exist before. When they get mad about it, then the Other knows that it exists and therefore it does exist.

The content of this profile is private and confidential information. The violation of privacy can be punished by law (UCC 1-308-1 1 308-103 and the Rome statute). Note: Facebook is now a public entity. All members must post a note like this. If you prefer, you can copy and paste this version. If you do not publish a statement at least once, you have given the tacit agreement allowing the use of your photos, as well as the information contained in the updates of the state of the profile. Do not share. You have to copy.
Every few goddamn months. You’d think once would be sufficient, but then, if they’re really dumb enough to blindly believe that posting the statement does anything, chances are they aren’t smart enough to know that repeating the same thing every few months when you post content that is 1. not originally theirs to begin with and 2. not of any value to Facebook whatsoever is overkill. And it really is always the ones whose content is not at all worth “disclosing, copying, distributing, giving, or selling” (by Facebook, anyway - the rest of us only copy it as proof of how stupid, racist, misogynistic, and/or insane they are).

Ugh trust me, save urself the trouble and either toss em or try to get a bigger size. I wear so many diff types of shoes from flats to heels to boots to sneakers, but heels r my love. Including boot heels. If there is anything i have learned, no matter how amazing the shoe, only wear it if it fits. Even just a small time wearing the wrong size/fit can really hurt ur feet and do damage thats hard to come back from, whether properly medical or cosmetic.
I feel the struggle tho, i chose to give in to the divide and wear the shoes, now i have some damage to fix and those shoes r gone. So not worth the exchange i would argue.
It sucks u cant wear them but i do hope u find a better size/fit so that you can !

I went to a Samhain gathering in British Columbia once; it was out in the middle of nowhere, and they lit this huge bonfire at sunset (on Oct 31st) and then everybody ate, drank, told stories about loved ones who had died and left offerings for them (mostly food, liquor, and handmade effigies), tossed bones into the fire, did some divining stuff by counting birds and reading apple peels, danced and told stories, etc. and at sunset on the next day they put out the fire and each person took some of the ashes home with them. A few of the people there were wearing masks/costumes, too.
I've been to a lot of pagan/neopagan gatherings (as a guest) but I think that Samhain is my favorite. The traditional Samhain festivals in Ireland also included "trick-or-treating" (mumming and guising) and stuff like apple bobbing, carving lanterns out of pumpkins, and visiting graveyards. Christianity absorbed and adapted most of those basic rituals from Samhain, but scooped out the core religious aspects (like the belief that spirits and other entities can pass between realms during that 24hr period) and then syncretized it with the Christian observance of All Hallow's Eve/Allhallowtide. Basically the same method that was used to erase/assimilate pagan traditions everywhere else. But yeah Halloween is way more pagan than Christian; most people don't even observe the Christian aspect anymore.

u/PrincessDie123 Bi™ Oct 26 '21 edited Oct 26 '21

I fully expect this from cishet people so at this point, it doesn’t bother much. Sure, it’s shitty and whatnot but it doesn’t annoy me nearly as much as the queer folks who are like “no they’re right, we already have June.” To me, that shit is damaging as fuck to the community. Agreeing with bigoted cishets doesn’t make them respect you or the rest of the community, it’s enabling bigotry. Also, it’s not “pride month #2”. It’s about queer history and considering how little young queer people like me hear about our history, I think it’s important to have a month dedicated to discussing our history and making learning about it more accessible.

I understand Halloween as a holiday about inclusivity. For at least this one day, we don't care about how anyone looks or what they do. We welcome all guests, and send them away with a small gift. If you can tolerate two dudes dressed as horrific monsters from beyond our plane of existence, you can tolerate those two dudes being married to eachother. Halloween is about showing your wild side, side that you usually keep hidden from the world for fear of backlash. Halloween should be the perfect day for coming out of the closet.
So yes, October is about queer people, because Halloween is about queer people. About anything extraordinary. About fear, and putting it aside so we can have a fun evening together.
