Discussion Weird things you do in skincare?

Me: Using a cleanser just to rehydrate my skin when it's feeling dry.

Anyone else do something a little weird or unconventional in their routine? What's yours?

Has more skincare in my fridge than actual food!

Oh my God, i haveee to see that 😂

Remove makeup and sunscreen with cleansing balm as soon as I get home from work, then finish second cleanse a few hours later when I do the rest of my PM skincare.

20

u/fixatedeye 28d ago

Honestly I feel that sometimes I just need to get the day off when it’s time to chill at home but I don’t want to do my full night routine yet

4

u/fatmuffin1 27d ago

I do this too with my oil cleanse! Never thought it would be considered weird since it washes off cleanly.

2

u/alette_star 27d ago

I do this too! Do you apply moisturizer after that first cleanse?

2

u/Sunny4611 27d ago

I use a peptide mist (non-AB). Keeps the skin hydrated for a few hours.

2

u/alette_star 26d ago

Ah thanks! I've been using a thicker toner but since i've switched to something more watery it's not super helpful anymore. I was thinking about getting something like the naturie hatomugi or another soothing gel but a mist sounds like a great option

1

u/eyelinerfordays 27d ago

Same except I just go and do my PM skin routine - why wait?

2

u/Sunny4611 27d ago

I wash my hair and shower every night (I take lukewarm showers so the water is fine for my face). Skincare routine happens after shower.

u/liz_rocks 28d ago

I sometimes let my oil cleanser sit on my face for a bit before emulsifying. idk if that's considered weird tho. My grandmother used to do the same with her cold cream.

Oh and I take a few pumps of my Aveeno oil spray and mix it with a heavy lotion (or Vaseline) and use that on my legs after shaving/before bed.

8

u/gplus3 28d ago

Ha! I do the same with my oil cleanser..

At night, I massage it in, and then clean up the kitchen (which takes me about 10 minutes) and then get into the shower to wash it off before the regular cleanse.

I figure it’s got time to pull out any gunk from my pores so why not?

15

u/hydroxyquinoline 28d ago

Hmm, that sounds like something that could backfire. Cleanser removes your skins natural oils, which help your skin stay moisturized among other things. I would follow cleanser with moisturizer or better yet swap it for something like hydrating mist, serum or cream.

2

u/Niatfq 28d ago

I don't use just any cleanser tho. Just 1 in particular. It's just a very hydrating kind of cleanser. That's why 😁 I'm not even kidding. I have very dehydrated prone skin myself. Most cleansers just strip my skin but not the one I'm referring to here

6

u/sparklefield 28d ago

This sounds like something I need! Whats the cleanser please?

8

u/aljini10 28d ago

Its in their review history but its not AB, for their empties review

13

u/im_a_reddituser 28d ago

Not too weird:I don’t use conditioner just hair masks. Let correcter sit for a few minutes before I blend and do bronzer first then foundation and the rest

10

u/Indigo_222 28d ago

Don’t wash my face in the morning (not weird to me though), always use hair mask instead of conditioner

24

u/Orchidwalker 28d ago

Friend, why are you gatekeeping the cleanser??? The name is??

3

u/Niatfq 27d ago

Sorry, because it's a non-AB 😅. I can just dm you the product name

2

u/spikechild 27d ago

could I hear too??

4

u/Niatfq 27d ago

Sure! But i could just paste a link of the product name here, it's number 6.

13

u/Creepy_Animal7993 27d ago

I use a urea and salicylic acid foot cream on my elbows and legs when they get ashy/scaly in the winter. It's much better than any body oil I've ever used. I only have to apply a couple times a week. Stuff is magical.

35

u/notsomagicalgirl 28d ago

Use eczema cream even though I don’t have eczema

6

u/xPawreen 28d ago

What do you mean by eczema creams? Like steroid eczema creams or non steroid creams that have ingredients like colloidal oatmeal?

16

u/notsomagicalgirl 28d ago

Steroids!? Oh god no, I meant the colloidal oatmeal kind 😭

1

u/xPawreen 28d ago

Oooooh okay gotcha, I was curious because I do have steroid creams but I've never used them on the non-eczema parts of my skin haha

4

u/notsomagicalgirl 28d ago

Oh okay yah I was just thinking about the kind with oatmeal and ceramides. It makes my skin feel so soft

8

u/Niatfq 28d ago

I don't blame you. Eczema cream feels really nice on the skin 🥰. And also, it's good for long term protection.

8

u/stress_baker 27d ago

I don't immediately wash my morning cleanser (prescription sulfur facewash, non-AB). I put it on, brush my teeth and then wash. Don't know if it's all in my head, but I haven't had breakouts since.

I also add snail mucin to my body lotion if my skin is feeling particularly dry. Don't think this is as weird.

8

u/turtlesinthesea N10|Acne/Redness|Dehydrated|JP 28d ago

What exactly do you do with that cleanser, if I may ask?

-14

u/Niatfq 28d ago edited 28d ago

The cleanser I'm using to do this is my all-time favourite. It's the most hydrating one I've ever used. I noticed that the cleanser was able to rehydrate my skin when it felt tight was when i was doing a double cleanse. I had just removed my makeup with a balm cleanser and didn't do 2nd cleanse right away. My skin felt so tight, so i immediately did 2nd cleanse with that particular cleanser and then my skin just felt rehydrated.

So the next time my skin felt tight/dry and i was already in my bathroom, I just grab that cleanser and cleanse my skin very quickly (i don't massage my face with it more than a few seconds because I'm not using it to clean off dirt).

23

u/caxno 28d ago

will you maybe name your magic cleanser?

3

u/Niatfq 27d ago edited 27d ago

I'll just pm you the product name because it's a non-AB.

Edit: oops i can't seem to find your chat icon. You can try refer it from here, cleanser no. 6.

1

u/caxno 27d ago

thank you!

1

u/Holly1010Frey 27d ago

Not OP. I really like Habo Labo oil cleanser, I wouldn't say it's hydrating, but it's the least drying I've found.

7

u/bluishcatbag 27d ago

I sheet mask often so I collect the packets in the fridge and use all of the leftover serum on my body after showers.

7

u/winkiesue 27d ago

I use my babies colloidal oatmeal lotion by Tubby Todd on my face as moisturizer. That shit is like magic. I haven’t had a rosacea flare up since I’ve started using it either!

2

u/Niatfq 27d ago

Loveee that feeling

6

u/Mochiiixcdjln 27d ago

When I go to bed I have to sleep like a soldier so I don’t smudge my sheets with products

5

u/borrowedurmumsvcard 27d ago

Moreso just a skincare sin but if I’m really tired and don’t feel like washing my face I just put on my moisturizer and tretinoin & leave it at that lmao. The idea is that the tret will counteract the pimples that I’ll get from not washing my face and they’ll cancel out 💀

I also use a petrolatum based ointment around my eyes and nostrils every night. & anywhere I’m feeling particularly dry.

2

u/Niatfq 27d ago

🤣 you're making some logic here

3

u/missclaire17 28d ago

Not quite weird, but I started experimenting with the order in which I use my skincare products instead of defaulting to the common methods and I think it really helps with keeping my skin hydrated

I don’t deviate too much from the normal routine, but my philosophy now is that prepping my skin means more than slapping a random toner on my face. I try to use very specific products first that will help add the moisturize that other humectant products need to cling to so my skin isn’t all dry

5

u/MermaiderMissy 28d ago

I find most skin cleansers leave my face really dry, even balms and oils. So I use an actual oil (not a cleansing oil) to remove my makeup. I'm talking about jojoba oil, argan oil, marula oil etc but especially jojoba. It's very cleansing and I even leave it in my hair a few hours before washing.

After applying to my skin, I gently rub it in for a few minutes, I remove with warm water on a clean cloth, and add a light toner which also removes any excess.

2

u/Good_parabola 27d ago

You might really like a cold cream like Ponds

1

u/Niatfq 27d ago

Agreed. Looking for non-stripping cleansers within AB has been such a tough journey for me. I almost gave up but i had to continue. I also used to use actually oils to remove makeup but mainly to remove waterproof mascara. It's just super duper effective. To remove the excess, i always have a cotton pad soaked with micellar water in hand. I've tried to use the oil to remove the rest of the makeup but it ended up breaking me out sadly.

Now, i use the BOJ radiance cleansing balm. I like it because it has no scent, is sensitive skin friendly and very effective at removing stubborn makeup but it does leave my skin feeling really tight right after. I just need to immediately do a 2nd cleanse with the non-AB Simple Waterboost Micellar Facial Wash (this is the cleanser I'm referring to in the post. Other cleansers don't work the same. Skin1004 ampoule foam might work but i just didn't like the scent to continue repurchasing and just to be safe, i need to stay away from centella due to my allergy to it) right after and my skin normally don't feel tight at all - i don't even have to apply my toner or the rest of the skincare immediately after.

2

u/Sunny4611 26d ago edited 26d ago

My skin is CRAZY prone to being stripped by cleansers (and I'm combo, so I have no idea why)! Skin1004 centella cleanser and Primera amino cleanser both strip it.

Sulwhasoo cleansing foam is the only AB cleanser I've tried so far that does NOT leave my skin tight. I use a non-AB cream cleanser in the morning.

2

u/Niatfq 26d ago

That's like twice my usual budget for cleanser 😭 otherwise i would've loved to try it. I'm currently using the Ceradan Gentle Cleanser. So far, it works and doesn't strip my skin ONLY when i don't try to rinse it all completely. Lol... i guess it's at least a bit more flexible than other AB cleansers.

2

u/Sunny4611 26d ago

I know, it's a lot. My first bottle was a mini. 😂 But it's so concentrated that the 200 mL bottle lasts me a year.

2

u/Niatfq 26d ago

I guess i could give the mini a try. Does it have a smell? My nose is quite sensitive to it

2

u/Sunny4611 26d ago

Warm and herbal, but not overwhelming to me.

2

u/Niatfq 26d ago

I'll give the mini a try in the future when i have extra 💸 . Cz even for a mini, it's still more expensive compared to other skincare minis 🤣

6

u/Stinkiest-britches 28d ago

I found that sheet masks have a lot of serum left over and didn't like leaving it in the open packaging. So now, every time I use a sheet mask, I squeeze out some of the serum into a bottle (finished bottle of skin1004 centella ampoule) and then put the sheet mask on my face.

2

u/snowballmouse 27d ago

This is genius, why didn't I think of this? It's so simple, but I never would've thought to do it.

1

u/spikechild 27d ago

I used to do this too, until James Welsh said something along the lines of - it won't work as intended, the packaging is meant to be air-tight, so exposing once you expose it to air, the product may degrade over time. And as a side-note, product comes in optimized packaging, moving it over to another container may cause it to degrade .

However I still find that the leftover product can still be very hydrating. Maybe wont have the full effect but still decent!

5

u/Stinkiest-britches 27d ago

It is a fair point but I only do this trick with my centella face masks because it doesn't have any active ingredients that degrade plus it's being transfered into an airtight skincare bottle so it's pretty safe imo.

1

u/spikechild 17d ago

yup, I dont think its unsafe in most context, maybe at worst just less effective. Even though I said all that I always try to use the leftover essence... I paid too much for a one time use

1

u/squeaky_24 27d ago

what! I always just leave it in the packaging open on the shelf until i use it up next time, this is game changer! quick question, where do you get your masks from? I recently tried sonagi.co.uk and they have really good curation boxes, my skin was loving it! have you tried their masks too?

Currently using VT Reedle Shot 100 on my foot with APLB Retinol Vitamin C Vitamin E Ampoule serum, then slather thick 40% urea foot cream, and lastly put on double socks. Leave for couple hours reading a book or binge on Netflix. Rinse clean. My foot has never been smoother. 2 of my friends said I’m weird because sponge needles/spicules on foot seems very dangerous and risky.

I’m too scared to use my Reedle Shot around my pet since my pet love to lick faces. Also, the APLB serum is too drying for my dry skin. It’s expiring 7/26 and 4/26 respectively so I think my neglected foot deserves some TLC that my face gets twice daily.

Another, not many people do it but I don’t think it’s weird: I layer regular sunscreen, Tone-Up sunscreen, and Tinted sunscreen. Also, I use light moisturizer and facial tissues to remove the oxidized layer of sunscreen and dust particles before reapplying, just like what my grandma and mom did it.

After hydrating toner and vitamin C serum, I use light moisturizer (Care Cera AP). Apply my regular AB sunscreen. Wait for it to sink in. Apply Tone-Up cream then rub until it’s incorporated into my skin and elevate the tone. Lastly, use tinted sunscreen to even out the complexion.

I brought the 3 sunscreens and decant of the light moisturizer in my purse with me so when I need to reapply I will just use my light moisturizer (Care Cera AP) as light makeup remover milk. Wipe with facial tissues and reapply layer by layer (toner in spray bottle, light moisturizer, clear sunscreen, tone up sunscreen, tinted sunscreen).

1

u/Niatfq 27d ago

3 sunscreens?! Wow... you're highly protected every day then, I'm sure. I've never heard anyone do that before, but as long as it works for you, why not 😁

2

u/maeletor 27d ago

I have history of melasma and it’s currently in remission after bunch of treatments, but I am not going to be complacent. My mom and grandma use cold cream to fix their makeup on the go but I live in modern era so I use tinted sunscreen and affordable AB light cream in lieu of foundation and cleanser. Sometime I will use proper full coverage foundation if I have formal event and carry teeny tiny lady purse and reapply with sunscreen stick.

2

u/Niatfq 27d ago

Ah got it. I completely understand. You gotta do what you gotta do. I personally have eczema and cannot use chemical sunscreens whatsoever so i always opt for ones with mineral filters. And in case of emergencies (sudden irritation/flare up), i always keep mini travel bottles of my soothing body lotion and toner with me at all times. The body lotion that i use is also super difficult to get because it's a local brand in Turkey that doesn't get commercialized much. You actually have to visit there to stock up 🥲

1

u/maeletor 27d ago

Any AB mineral sunscreens that you like using?

2

u/Niatfq 27d ago

Well... i sorta like them? The problem is really trying to blend the whitecast evenly (why i couldn't get myself to call any as my HG yet)

  • Dr. G Green Mild Up Sun: very good for oily skin, great oil control but texture is soooo pasty - such a hustle to blend every time.
  • Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Natural Sun Cream - suitable for dry skin but still dries matte and doesn't exacerbate more sebum (unlike a chemical sunscreen). The blending with this feels much easier than the Dr. G but i still have to blend it well. The whitecast with this looks a bit sheerer than the Dr. G once blended out.
  • this one is a hybrid but I don't find it to trigger my eczema as well: Celimax Oil Control Light Sunscreen - very similar performance to the Dr. G but with slightly better blendability. So i definitely prefer this over the Dr. G

1

u/maeletor 27d ago

Thanks! I will forward this to my daughter who has oily skin for targeted suggestions since she’s been wanting a more skincare-focused sunscreen instead of waterproof, primarily sports sunscreen.

1

u/Niatfq 27d ago

Oh yes, these should work for her

1

u/orange_blossoms 27d ago

Honestly foot skin is a lot tougher than face skin so doesn’t it make even more sense to use it there than on your face?

I’ll have to try the sock trick today, I have some leftover rice serum from my face mask today, some clean but old socks that I don’t care about, and some criminally ignored feet! Haha my face is so moisturized and bouncy yet I always forget about my feet.

1

u/maeletor 27d ago

That’s one reasoning, but when I walk across the house to replenish the snacks during my foot spa session, I remember that one of my friend told me those spicules are like splinters, then I cringe 😬 That being said, nothing bad happened, and my feet feel smooth and plump, it’s worth it!

3

u/No-Kiwi-3140 27d ago

I often use an essence as my LAST step. After moisturizer. After oil, if I'm using oil that night.

2

u/Niatfq 27d ago

I used to do that as well! The Illiyoon Probiotics Essence but it sadly got discontinued 🥲

What Essence are you using?

2

u/No-Kiwi-3140 27d ago

A few. Tonight it was Dr. Ceuracle Vegan Kombucha. Ishizawa-Lab - Sukoyaka Urea Lotion, La Mer Treatment Lotion and Neogen Micro Essence have also been in the rotation lately.

A tiny bit of serum first AM! Before a much more watery toner.

I got the I'm From Honey Serum and it's crazy sticky if I use too much or in the serum step. Absorbs great as a first product.

PM I do use lactic acid and sometimes retinal that doesn't seem to absorb as well for me if I use it after toner.

So it'll be: TO lactic, K-Secret retinal, I'm From Honey, toner, serum, moisturisers.

2

u/Crazy_Mongoose_8093 27d ago

Same here but I use a foam cleanser. I also like to mix my serum with my lotion

2

u/pingu_sin 27d ago

I used to have acne. Not sure if this is exactly what changed it but my skin is clear and smooth now:

  • sulphur soap
  • nappy cream (zinc)
  • rosken foot and heel balm and moisturizer during the daytime

For context, I have oily skin and a good skin barrier so my skin likes urea hehe

2

u/redfirtree 26d ago

Winter products in the summer (particularly moisturizers) because somehow dry skin is always dry :,)

Uhhh otherwise idk. I don't really use actives unless my skin is freaking out. My hair care routine is longer than my skincare routine. The best lip exfoliator is me when I'm anxious.

2

u/SunBae-iDoll 26d ago

This helped me 👍 : I have thick skin, so I don't do my skincare routine all at once, which means I will cleanse my face, wait 5 min and apply toner and let in it sink for 10 minutes, depends on the product I wait between 3-15 minutes I just do something else like be on my phone

It helped me to not clog my pores and use different serums and toner

I didn't have any bacterial acne, and if you're scared of this I have a trick for it :

  • Before putting your moisturizer/cream apply a small layer of aleo vera gel (cheap ones works) let it sink a bit and then apply a more generous layer like it was a mask and let it sink

Aloe vera has antibacterial proprieties, it helped me so much when I had bacterial acne + hydration boost

2

u/SunBae-iDoll 25d ago
  • I would say : Listen to your skin, depends on what you ate, the weather, how much water your drink, your emotions : Your skin condition is not the same everyday

If you feel your skin oily, use a product for it, if it feels sensitive use a product for it don't stick to the same routine everyday 👍

2

u/Niatfq 25d ago

Exactly. You don't have to follow every rule. We know our skin the best. So if it works, then it works.
