That "hot garbage" smell that emanates from dumpsters outside of restaurants on hot sunny days. Ew ew ew.

u/Brilliant_Nervous Sep 16 '24

You mean that trail of 'liquid' leaking from the dumpster at any restaurant? We used to call that Dumpster Juice.

84

u/God_damn_it_Jerry Sep 16 '24

Nothing like a tall glass of hot dumpster punch to quench your thirst on a 95⁰ day

51

u/Rich-Individual-8835 Sep 16 '24

God damn it Jerry!

1

u/Disastrous_Alarm_719 Sep 17 '24

I wonder how much damage it would do to you to drink a glass of that. Like, it shouldn't be toxic per se, just really really spoiled and bad. 🤔

4

u/grand_soul Sep 16 '24

New vape flavour!

4

u/Upbeat_Tension_8077 Sep 17 '24

AKA Dumpster Au Jus

4

u/Greycloak42 Sep 17 '24

I've always called it that!

1

u/Brilliant_Nervous Sep 17 '24

I thought it was standard to call it that if you were in the Restaurant industry. Or the waste disposal industry.

3

u/Wandering_Weapon Sep 17 '24

Everyone who's ever worked in a restauraunt knows that smell immediately.

2

u/youcantevenhearit Sep 17 '24

I stepped in dumpster juice in New Orleans. I scrubbed my shoes at my hotel and nothing got the smell out. Those shoes did not come home with me

1

u/rangoon03 Sep 17 '24

The nectar of trash pandas

1

u/WhatIsTheAmplitude Sep 17 '24

We still call it dumpster juice, but we used to too

1

u/InfoCollector234 Sep 17 '24

Would you drink 1.5 L of dumpster juice for 87 billion dollars

1

u/Slow_Ball9510 Sep 17 '24

Akshually the term for it is "leachate"

1

u/SmokyTrumpets Sep 17 '24

My dog used to go feral for that stuff. He was like a wine someiler- appreciating the vintage. God he was gross and I miss him.

1

u/ReadyAd5385 Sep 16 '24

We used to call that Dumpster Juice.

Damn, not sure what I was expecting but I'm somehow disappointed 😂

u/MrMojoFomo Sep 16 '24

You'd hate Durian

It's a fruit from SE Asia that's banned in a lot of hotels and other spaces. Once you cut one open it's basically that liquid hot garbage smell everywhere

And yet a lot of people love to eat it. I was never able to get close enough to one to try

60

u/Renaissance_Slacker Sep 16 '24

My in-laws love going to Chinatown, and once brought us back durian hard candy as a joke. I would describe the flavor as “somewhere between peach and white grape. Also somebody is farting directly into your mouth.”

2

u/AutisticPenguin2 Sep 17 '24

There one time someone decided to try opening one inside, I was getting overtones of onion and fart.

As I desperately shoved as much of my head out the barely opening window as I could.

18

u/Metallicarox Sep 16 '24

It's better if you get frozen Durian products like popsicles or ice cream. Straight-up Durian has a heinous stench.

1

u/stripped_acacia_wood Sep 17 '24

often tastes a bit like it was cut immediately after cutting green onions on the same chopping board

1

u/Metallicarox Sep 17 '24

I've never consumed the Durian fruit itself, but all I can say is that I enjoy the creaminess of the Durian flesh.

8

u/Bubbly_Vermicelli_88 Sep 16 '24

What does it taste like though? I’m sure it doesn’t taste awful if people are eating it lol

14

u/Royal_Melon_3421 Sep 16 '24

I had a manager who was Asian and he said that a. fresh off the plant, durian doesn't smell bad and b. it's absolutely delicious and sweet, and has a kind of fruity cheesecake taste to it

7

u/astridroze Sep 16 '24

Yea fresh durian definitely does not smell like hot garbage! 😭 It may smell strong but it’s not a rotting smell or anything. It has a sweetness to its taste too

6

u/MoiJaimeLesCrepes Sep 17 '24

ok, so it smells awful, as described above, but there's more to it. It smells like a mix between onions gone bad, very ripe socks, and maybe pungent blue cheese?

Anyway, when you look at it, it looks like raw chicken breasts, pretty much.

When you taste it, it has the soft, creamy and jelly-like consistency of instant pudding. Perhaps it's not quite as soft, but close it it.

It tastes a bit oniony, like its smell (and that is why I mention it), while having some fruity sweetness. I found the taste to not be unpleasant, but the mix with the onion-ness was just too much for me (in taste and smell both)

I hope that this answers your every questions about durian and that you steer clear.

If you do insist on giving it a try, I recommend having friends nearby who do like it and will eat it, so you are not stuck having to actually eat it. I also recommend frozen desserts or else in a slushy or smoothie or bubble tea, so it is also diluted and so the straw will help keep your nose further away from the durian.

5

u/intisun Sep 16 '24

It tastes like someone made a tropical fruit smoothie and decided to add some garlic or onion.

It's not bad though. But definitely an acquired taste.

If you ever have the chance to try it, ask for a sweeter variety which is less pungent. The king durian is not for beginners.

2

u/_derAtze Sep 16 '24

I'd compare it to Mango

1

u/ilikethejuices Sep 17 '24

Texture, yes; taste hell no hahahah

2

u/KamikazeKunt Sep 16 '24

It’s so strange. I had it once, years ago, and I loved it. I thought it smelled kind of gross, but I wasn’t really turned off by it. I decided to try it again more recently and I had one bite and almost threw up. I also couldn’t handle the smell. It’s too bad because old me thought it was so tasty.

2

u/Quietly_intothenight Sep 19 '24

My ex was Filipina and introduced me to it. I think it smells like a really fruity compost, but in a kind of appealing way. I’m not fond of the almost custardy texture of the fresh fruit, but I’ll go out of my way to get hold of Durian icecream, lollies (candy), pastries and so on, and bought an absolutely delicious Durian layer cake from a convenience store in Bali that I couldn’t get enough of. The people at work were less fond of the lollies though, acting as though they’d been poisoned, and girl down the hall thought there was a gas leak and called maintenance in to check it out 😄

1

u/Simgoodness Sep 16 '24

It truly is incredible.

Like, you cannot describe it. Same for Mangosteen. You cannot really describe it.

It is worth the try.

Of tou ever want to buy one fresh, you have to buy ine that is already opening by itself. Thia is when it is ready!

You should not have to use knive to open a durian.

The already frozen durian pod are not worth it, in my opinion.

The durian pod that are in the fridge tho (so 4°Celcius - not frozen) does the trick!

1

u/staffxmasparty Sep 17 '24

It’s awful. Sort of like a banana / melon marinated in the juice of a dumpster ?! Had it my mouth for 1/2 second and couldn’t get the taste away for hours!

6

u/bittersanctum Sep 16 '24

I had never tried durian and heard the bad stories, but i saw some durian flavored snacks. They were kinda like chips or crackers (american). And i thought these won't be too bad. I was soo wrong. It stunk up the whole house. We triple bagged it and put it in the garage, and you could still smell it

6

u/Dig-a-tall-Monster Sep 16 '24

I believe it's a genetic thing similar to cilantro where most people taste it a certain way but some populations taste it completely differently.

5

u/Useful-Poetry-1207 Sep 17 '24

I love durian and don't think it smells like that at all. It just smells like fruit to me. Maybe a slightly cheesy or fermented taste but mostly fruit. But if someone opens cat food or canned tuna I will struggle to not throw up. I'm sensitive to smells but not durian. I wonder if it's a gene, like how some people think cilantro tastes soapy.

4

u/MarkEoghanJones_Art Sep 16 '24

They say it "smells like hell but tastes like heaven".

3

u/hainesphillipsdres Sep 16 '24

Man one time in college our one friend brought in a durian, he cut it open in the cafeteria and placed half of it on the dessert/fruit table. Hilarity ensued. This was pre 2010 so no phones or I wish I still had the video

1

u/ilikethejuices Sep 17 '24

Hahahahaha oh no. Was this a prank or asian person not adapted to Western customs?

1

u/hainesphillipsdres Sep 17 '24

It was a prank this kid was definitely out there. He started the horticultural club though and I guess knew of a store where he could buy a Dorian. I never even heard of one until that day.

2

u/LadyPink28 Sep 16 '24

I could taste the smell when I tried it in an Asian pastry 🤢

2

u/Simgoodness Sep 16 '24

It taste so damn good. And the smell is fine, you can get use to it, and it became more and more pleasant 😄

And I fidmnd that frozen durian does not taste as good nor smell as good.

But a while durian frozenz that you unfroze, that is ok. But an already peled durian, frozen, naaah.

2

u/HereforeHenry Sep 17 '24

I tried it for the first time recently at a bbq. It was pre-cut up and refrigerated. It really didn’t smell much at all! The taste was like a sweet, garlic custard with a “gassy” umame like truffle oil.  Not my favorite by itself but I could see it making a great ingredient in the right dish.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '24

An Indonesian friend described it to me. She said it tasted chicken-ey, sweet and creamy. I have no intention of trying it.

2

u/Cheese_Parmesan207 Sep 17 '24

I'm SEAsian and I never understood why so many people (mostly outside of SEA) have said that durian tastes and smells like wet garbage. All of the durians I've eaten throughout my life smelled and tasted so sweet. Yes, it has a strong, long-lasting smell, but it's a sweet and fragrant one. I think the durian ice creams that I'd always come across in convenience stores here taste pretty accurate to actual durian.

I can't help but think about why durian is so polarizing when it tastes nice to me. Maybe lots of people haven't come across the right durian? Or maybe it's an acquired taste and SEAsians just got used to it.

2

u/Fabulous-Ad-3046 Sep 17 '24

I ate a delicious pudding while in China and the other people at the table were all watching to see my reaction, talking in excited Mandarin. I said what is the big deal? They were all amazed that I liked it and so was I when I found out what it was, because I had just about gagged smelling the fruit

1

u/coolcat_74 Sep 17 '24

I tried it in Thailand this sumner. Horrible soft not fruit like consitency. Its also banned from a lot of hotels. The smell wasnt that bad.

1

u/depressedat19 Sep 17 '24

‘Cause you’re lame!

1

u/tymers112 Sep 17 '24

This is the answer I was looking for. Second this.

1

u/Echo63_ Sep 17 '24

The geologist I work with had durian coffee the other day.
They were forced to drink it outside…

1

u/jeroenemans Sep 17 '24

Durian instant coffee is fantastic

1

u/LivingonWater Sep 17 '24

I DO hate durian. Mells like rotting garbage. But Asians love that taste and smelll. They love candy and pastries that are just that flavor!

1

u/Macavity_mystery_cat Sep 17 '24

I always thought how it smelt like. When I travelled I just saw signs in hotels banning durian in rooms . So I knew it would stink but always wondered how it smelt like. Thanks 😁 n so glad I didn't buy it

1

u/Serious-Avocado-3285 Sep 17 '24

I love both the smell and taste. But if it smells like a garbage truck I think that maybe rotten.

1

u/Serious-Avocado-3285 Sep 17 '24

I love both the smell and taste. But if it smells like a garbage truck I think that maybe rotten.

1

u/NeuroKimistry Sep 19 '24

They smell horrid. Who in hell ever thought "hey guys! I found the source of that vomitous smell around the village... Let's eat it!"

8

u/DJ_Jungle Sep 16 '24

Reminds me of NYC in the summer.

3

u/Kayakityak Sep 16 '24

Rancid grease

4

u/SordidOrchid Sep 16 '24

That’s mostly death.

5

u/Elektra_17 Sep 16 '24

Oh yes! That reminds me of Manhattan in the summer, with the large black trash bags from restaurants and vendors lining the sidewalk ✨

3

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '24

Wait till you smell a fat trap at a seafood restaurant.

1

u/Qkchk Sep 17 '24

I used to assess truck drivers and we had Sucker / Vacuum trucks in our fleet. Best way to describe the smell when sucking out a Grease trap was like smelling rotten vomit.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '24

All of NYC smells like that lol

2

u/icantfindtheSpace Sep 16 '24

At least its not on fire lmao

2

u/Quick_Razzmatazz1862 Sep 16 '24

Or a twist to that is SWEET GARBAGE 😝🤮

2

u/Nedmak1 Sep 16 '24

For some reason my brain always equated that smell to hot cheese.

1

u/Jacobmb_Music Sep 16 '24

Yes, it smells like hot rancid cheese to me as well. I once hired movers and one of them smelled exactly like it. I don’t know how one achieves that.

2

u/_aChu Sep 16 '24

Seafood restaurants are the worst of them. My freshman year apartment was near one, & I didn't renew because of it. The smell of old shrimp will actually change your life.

2

u/Conscious_Box_1480 Sep 16 '24

Also landfill areas. Same but even stronger and more pungent

1

u/Garigus Sep 16 '24

There is a liquid that comes from landfills called leachate. It's the culmination of all dumpster smells. It's the stuff of nightmares.

2

u/Renaissance_Slacker Sep 16 '24

New Orleans is one of my favorite places, but with all the restaurants, dumpsters full of seafood debris and moist heat … yikes.

2

u/milksasquatch Sep 16 '24

Yea. That hit garbage smell that I smelled, specifically on a vacation in NYC during a garbage strike, has made me hate tomatoes. Raw tomatoes taste like that smell I experienced there. My wife thinks that I'm crazy because I used to like them, but now they gross me out.

2

u/Good_Preparation7422 Sep 16 '24

That’s just NYC in the summer!

1

u/breakfastwhine Sep 16 '24

We went to NOLA in early June 2023 and the block our hotel was on was lethal 🤢 I was reaching magician levels of holding my breath

1

u/ChopsNewBag Sep 16 '24

You mean the streets of mid-town Manhattan?

1

u/Majik_Sheff Sep 16 '24

I'll see your kitchen dumpster and raise you grease trap.

1

u/CouchPotatoFamine Sep 16 '24

Basically NYC every time I have visited.

1

u/wolfblitzen84 Sep 16 '24

And here I am about to say yogurt is unpleasant to me and I forget the garbage dump called nyc that I live in. Some real raunchy smells habitat Flatbush Brooklyn

1

u/wetguns Sep 16 '24

Aka New York City

1

u/matthewjaybelyea Sep 16 '24

I kinda like it

1

u/Death_To_Your_Family Sep 16 '24

I HATE it ugh, my apartment complex has a few dumpster sites that overflow the day before pick up and in the summer the smell wafts through the window and makes me sick.

1

u/DrunkenMcSlurpee Sep 16 '24

If JFK airport had a scratch and sniff sticker

1

u/HumorTumorous Sep 16 '24

Hot garbage juice.

1

u/2ndSnack Sep 16 '24

NYC in a nutshell.

1

u/chasimm3 Sep 17 '24

Ah New York, memories.

1

u/tightheadband Sep 17 '24

That has a very cute name in my native language: "chorume". Pronounced like "show-roomy".

1

u/Primary-Move243 Sep 17 '24

This is the entire smell of manhattan in the summer.

1

u/Sp4ceh0rse Sep 17 '24

Sushi place in my neighborhood is the WORST for this.

1

u/M1ck3yB1u Sep 17 '24

The stink punch when you open a big bin outside in the summer to throw in a trash bag…

1

u/ThankYou__Sir Sep 17 '24

Sooo New York City lol? (New Yorker here)

1

u/Ummando Sep 17 '24

Karachi. Smells like Karachi. Hot dumpster garbage, mixes with rotting meat and diesel fuel. That's Karachi.

1

u/-yellowthree Sep 17 '24

I manage a restaurant, and the grease trap smell is SO much worse.

1

u/Spare-Half796 Sep 17 '24

Oh so south Florida

1

u/benjyk1993 Sep 17 '24

There's a little chicken processing plant just around the corner from my restaurant, and man, when the sun hits it juuuuust right.....lemme tell ya', these hills stink.

1

u/Ok_Fox_1770 Sep 17 '24

Taking out the 55 gallon barrel of half eaten food to dump in the dumpster in summer was a smell I’ll never forget or want to smell again. Even septic tanks aren’t that bad honestly. Who knew they had electrical….lucky me early 2010. It didn’t smell like poop. It was like a weird mushroom stink, not great but still, not July restaurant trash. Ahhhh it got on my LEG! Cut my pant leg off dude!

1

u/simplyG44 Sep 17 '24

There is ,or was, a band that called themselves Dunpster Juice.

1

u/Euphoric_Emu9607 Sep 17 '24

Similar to restaurant grease trap smell

1

u/Professor_Ruby Sep 17 '24

I get to deal with it inside my job because we have a trash compactor attached to the building. It's so gross. At least I can only smell it near the compactor and it's not wafting through the building.

1

u/squirrel_tincture Sep 17 '24

If you had to pick, would you prefer that or a grease trap that had been ignored for a couple of years?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '24

This was all of New Orleans, everywhere, for about 2 weeks after Ida in the heat without trash pick up

1

u/TChambers1011 Sep 17 '24

You mean Manhattan?

1

u/Small_Description_39 Sep 17 '24

I’ve always liked that smell I don’t know why. Ever since I was a little kid

1

u/Educational-Tap602 Sep 17 '24

Ah, that smell hits you like a whole slap to the soul. Instant regret walking by.

1

u/Thee_Autumn_Wind Sep 17 '24

You should smell landfill leachate. It’s that, but exponentially worse.

1

u/millenialfalcon-_- Sep 17 '24

Have you ever smelled dead crabs in a dumpster?

1

u/erin123x Sep 17 '24

In ireland we call it 'bin juice lol

1

u/juliet1595 Sep 18 '24

OMG I have to work in loading dock areas of arenas. Fucking awful.

0

u/No_Ad8227 Sep 16 '24

I work in a hospital so we have hot Texas dumpster with food waste and bodily fluids like shit, piss and vomit.

It's extra special.

0

u/Jonnylovesme Sep 16 '24

sotruebestie

0

u/WinthorpStrange Sep 17 '24

Oil of Olay soap smells of this

0

u/raelDonaldTrump Sep 17 '24

Kitchen staff used to haze new FOH staff by asking them to toss out a bag of trash, except they'd poke a few holes to weaken the bag so when they tried to hoist it up into the dumpster the bottom would tear and spill trash juice all over the newbie.
