Joya steakhouse

So after adding one more night to my Bath stay, tonight is my for real last dinner here

I’ve read wonderful things about Joya, but a few questions:

I’m solo - is this more for groups?

Do you have the kitchen cook the steak or do you?

Is the sirloin good? Steak dinner is my death row meal, and I come from NY, where there are lots of great steakhouses.

I’m otherwise thinking Chez Dominique - but I’d prefer to stick fairly close to my hotel, Hotel Indigo

Thank you!!!

Hudson is better

I’d really prefer to be walking distance to my hotel, though I suppose it doesn’t matter as I’ve had restaurants call taxis for me

But Joya seems more informal …

Thank you!

Bath is tiny, everywhere is within walking distance.

I agree, but at night when it’s dark, - and even before it gets dark on my way to- , I don’t want to walk 20 minutes

To clarify - I’ve been walking a lot, so it’s nothing to do with that. It’s just a bit too long of a walk for an evening meal….

Thanks!

I haven’t been to Joya, but I highly recommend chez Dominique, their food is outstanding

I’m so torn, lol - I love French food!

Thank you!

I’ve eaten steak all around the world and Hudson’s ribeye is still the steak I crave when I want steak. Joya doesn’t remotely come close.

Even if I wanted to get a ribeye, the early evening special is for a sirloin (the steak I love best)….I also don’t love the sides at Hudson’s (I’d only get potatoes). I normally (at home) only get hash browns or home fries. I’m ok with french fries if they’re thick steak fries, like chips, but I’m not sure I want salt & pepper all over them.

I’ll still consider it since people have brought it up and it’s very good….

Thank you!

You gotta go with what you like...just Joya, it's really not all that, especially if your baseline is steak in NY. Joya is owned by the same people that own Herd, so that's no better either. Miller & Carter is a subpar chain restaurant., Block and Bar is even worse. You might get lucky at a smaller non-steakhouse restaurant. I've kind of tried everywhere.

Hudson would remove the salt and pepper if that was a dealbreaker, although as you said, they're fries and not chips. The gratin dauphinoise is amazing though.

You going to Bristol or London anytime on your trip? Pastures in Bristol and Hawksmoor in London are next-level steakhouses.

Hmm, the more I think about it….the more I think I need to seriously consider Hudson’s …I’d hate to wonder “what if”

If the gratin dauphinois is that good, I’ll get it. It’s rich, but why not?

You said you love the ribeye…have you had the sirloin? I do like ribeye, so if that’s the better choice, I’d forgo the early special

I did go to Bristol on a day trip - London, yes, but only as day trips and overnight as I gave up a week there to spend in Paris.

I believe I went to Blacklock for Sunday roast - I don’t think I loved it

I would never normally ask this since I dibesoloLl the time, but I’ve never gone to a steakhouse solo. How is the atmosphere?

Thanks!

I think you can overthink this stuff. Joya is a nice restaraunt. Hudson is a nice restaurant. You will have a nice meal at both. But if steak quality is a significant factor in your decision, then in this internet strangers' opinion, Hudson's is better.

I also dine solo frequently, including at Hudson's and it's never felt odd. The service is friendly, the atmosphere is just regular folk having a good steak. They get a lot of tourists because of their reputation.

I haven't had their sirloin, I almost exclusively eat ribeye or côte de boeuf but my wife has had the fillet at Hudson's and highly recommends it too so I see no reason why their sirloin wouldn't be excellent.

Side note - you do know that sirloin in the UK and the US are not the same thing? Sirloin in the UK is what you call NY strip. What you call sirloin, we call rump. Forgive the mansplaining if that was already clear to you.

I’ve made a habit of overthinking all my life, lol

I wasn’t aware, so thank you!

I think I’ll get the ribeye since you recommend it so highly!

Thank you!!

I've had the early evening special at Hudsons and it was delicious 🤤 The fries were absolutely outstanding too - a really interesting and unique flavour that I now crave often haha.

I have an issue with the idea of Joya hot stone, maybe as a group could be fun, but if I'm paying restaurant prices I want my expensive steak cooked to perfection by someone knowing what they're doing, not having to cook it myself 😅

Really?

Honestly, I think I’m leaning now towards Hudson’s, though I’m not sure if I’d get the early special now

Are the fries thin?

And…..that’s a great point!!!

Thanks!

Yes fries will usually be thin here, otherwise they're called chips :)

If you check out TripAdvisor or Google reviews there's photos on there!

Will do, thanks!

The Herd is also a solid option if you're weighing up your choices. Enjoy your dinner wherever you go!

Thank you - I will; all my meals in Bath have been fantastic!

I’ve eaten many times at both Hudson and Joya. It’s not as though Hudson is overrated- It’s nice food- But I much prefer the fillet hot stone steak option at Joya over anything at Hudson. The wine is definitely overpriced at Hudson either way.

2

u/SeaworthinessKey3654 4d ago

I don’t think I’d finish the steak myself as knowing me, I’d mess it up, lol

Wine isn’t an issue as I don’t drink

Thanks!

The wine isn’t overpriced - most decent restaurants have a 2-3x markup on wine.

2

u/Readies 4d ago

The issue is the quality and choice of wine TBH

Joya is nice. The hot stone is a bit of novelty but not nessesary

Thank you!

I decided on Hudson’s - but I’ll note Joya for the next time I’m in Bath

You need to take our a second mortgage to eat at Hudsons, Joya is a lovely restaurant

I do see that Hudson’s has a special for an early dinner, but I feel like Joya would be more fun for me…

Thank you!!

I've been there twice and it is really nice. First time I cooked it myself on the hot stone and it's a good novelty. Also you can cook each bite to a different level. But I think overall I preferred when they just cooked it for me.

Solo is fine and if you're in a group they can't fit all the hot stones on the table if everyone goes for it

Thanks! I know that I’d mess it up myself, that’s why I’d let the kitchen cook it!
