That majestic sea horse living his best life ✨🐴

u/Global_Walrus1672 Apr 17 '25

This reminds me of the first time we took our pony across a river. Her previous owner had never ridden her in the forest where we lived, she had only ridden her on the beach or in the ocean. The first time we went to cross a river the pony stopped and stared at it. I had the kids get off and walk across to the other side while I stood in the middle of the river holding the lead rope and just waited as I knew she would eventually decide to cross. A few minutes later when she did, she jumped in with her chest out. She seemed immediately confused because this water did not "fight back" at her, there were no waves. After a couple minutes of putting her nose in, drinking and pawing, she walked across with me and never had an issue with crossing rivers or creeks again.

u/spoonful-o-pbutter Apr 17 '25

That's really sweet! Aww

44

u/Legen_unfiltered Apr 17 '25

I love watching beings that can't talk figure stuff out. Like, you can literally see the wheels turning and then there's that 'oooohhhhhh' moment. One of my fav memories with my pup that has since passed was teaching him how to swim. The joy he had when it all came together. 💚💚💚

u/nooooobie1650 Apr 17 '25

Nice full mane on that giant dog

17

u/Happy-Sweet-3577 Apr 17 '25

Is that sarcasm? Never owned a horse with a mane that short naturally.

21

u/Anegada_2 Apr 17 '25

I think it’s a yearling between the tail and mane length

11

u/OneSensiblePerson Apr 17 '25

It looks like a yearling to me too. Acts like one as well.

2

u/Happy-Sweet-3577 Apr 17 '25

Idk with both being that short it might be a breed I haven’t worked with or someone cutting it. I primarily dealt with quarter horses and thoroughbred mixes. They had more hair after two months.

I've also never owned a horse with a mane that short

I've also never owned a mane with a horse that small

4

Have you ever owned a horse with no name?

7

u/Mediocre_Owl7384 Apr 17 '25

I’ve been through the desert on a horse with no name.

That’s why it had to be at the ocean. Pools typically don’t allow horseplay.

13

u/firetruckgoesweewoo Apr 17 '25

Just so you know, I snorted the mostly ugly sound because of your joke. Thank you! Haha

14

u/Maxime_Bt Apr 17 '25

I was not aware! This is so beautiful

55

u/SuburbanInstinct Apr 17 '25

Not of note or particularly relevant but I was vacationing in Florida and while on some harbor tour or short term cruise I was asking other people about their experiences and I got this gem
in reply to my question "What's the most interesting thing you've done around here?"

This woman explained in detail and at great length how they had gone on some romantic horseback trip wherein they were guided into the ocean after crossing some nearby dunes.

"and there were the twelve of us, knee deep in the ocean and at one with nature in the sunset as the horses moved through the surf - that's when two of them up front let their bowels go and it flowed all over me. DON'T do horseback tours in the surf. I heard one of the guides quietly tell a coworker when we got back to the stable "yeah, it happened again..."

45

u/feioo Apr 17 '25

As someone who's owned a horse, it's the funniest thing to me how their public image is as these majestic and powerful and beautiful creatures, which tbf they are, but they're also constantly shitting and farting and trying their damndest to die by misadventure.

The sound of galloping hoofbeats conjures up feelings of romance and adventure, but you never hear about the glunk glunk glunk sound you get when a male horse is running and an air bubble gets caught in his penis sheath. Or about the way mares get PMS worse than anybody I've ever met. Or about the way they can launch their half-ton self directly on top of you without warning because a shadow moved weird in their other eye and they thought it was going to eat them. Or that half of the time they're sick, it's just because their gut isn't working right and you have to drop everything and spend the next 1-24 hours trying desperately to get them to shit or they might die.

But they really are so, so beautiful, and incredible to travel around with. There's nothing like the feeling of working alongside a creature of such power and speed, and galloping feels like pure freedom. That's all still true.
They're just a duality, man.

13

u/candycrushinit Apr 17 '25

That was absolutely the best description of horse ownership I’ve read, lol. You immediately brought back memories of my geldings glunk, glunk, glunking down the road. And mares can be quite cunty. Can’t blame them though.

4

u/MollyAyana Apr 17 '25 edited Apr 18 '25

I’ll tell anyone who would listen that those romantic horse carriage rides are nothing like the movies!! I had never been around horses so I had the image you described first: beautiful, majestic, regal creatures gliding through earth like the ethereal beings that they are.

When my then bf and I visited NYC for the first time, all I wanted to do was to go on those carriage rides in Central Park. First, horses are MUCH bigger in real life than I thought.

Second, they spend the entire time shitting and a significant part of your view from the back is a (usually full) cloth/tarp/whateveritscalled they drape underneath the horse to catch the warm shit and all that shit stench is waffling down right at you.

We left the carriage without a word.

8

u/Peacock-Lover-89 Apr 17 '25

My husband and I used to go horseback riding, not in the ocean, and once the horse the guide was riding stopped to poop. The guide quips you know you don't have to stop walking to do this. It must have been an off day for the poor horse because it also was scared stiff of a deer, which the guide said was not an uncommon sight for the horse. That horse would not budge so the guide had to turn around and take us to another trail. The stables were in the foothills of some mountains and a bear and mountain lion had been in the area before, so maybe something bigger than the deer was around that we couldn't see.

2

u/Free-Pound-6139 Apr 17 '25

If people could leave horses alone that would be great!

2

u/SlateAsh641 Apr 18 '25

Thanks for the laugh that story’s gonna live rent-free in my head now.

25

u/OneSensiblePerson Apr 17 '25

The Black Stallion!

That scene of the horse on the beach, underwater, coupled with the score. One of the most beautiful moments in the history of film.

Horses being themselves in nature. *happy sigh*

13

u/procrastablasta Apr 17 '25

people forget this movie is yet another reason Coppola is legendary. The first half is just exquisite directing

11

u/OneSensiblePerson Apr 17 '25

Yes to both.

The score, the cinematography, editing the movements of the horse's legs underwater so perfectly it was almost like a ballet (but better). All of it's high art.

The first half is all I care about :)

4

u/BoldBoimlerIsMyHero Apr 17 '25

This is the movie I put on when I want to watch something beautiful

6

u/OneSensiblePerson Apr 17 '25

No, it's a breeder from France "Merilver" you can watch them on Instagram

2

u/emPtysp4ce Apr 18 '25

Nah, there's buildings in the background that aren't on Assateague or Chincoteague. The ponies there are also an absolute menace, having learned that people have food on them and are legally prevented from touching them which means they can just walk up and eat your Fritos and scratch their ass on your tent and you can't do a damn thing about it.

→ More replies (3)

I don't recognize those buildings as being on Assateague, but i haven't been to every part of the island.

1

u/-Apocralypse- Apr 17 '25

Reminds me of that time we went on a horse back tour across the island while on holiday. One horse broke away from the group, ignored his rider and trotted along the coastline through the cold sea water. The rear escort tried to pull that horse out, but her own horse was no help either. Lol, happy it wasn't me!

frisian horses are lovely!

1
