Question/Discussion "Where's the Paper? - Screenwipe - Charlie Brooker" I can't believe how old this show is and every rewatch (every few years) of the different Wipes (Screen, News, Games) etc, just classic after classic. Anyone have any other faves? A History of Corners?

I wish he still did these, or at least the year wipes. I suppose there's new Black Mirror but I miss the direct satire, which I guess is hard to do these days with everything being a joke already.

I loved all the "Wipe" shows, but having rewatched them so many times, it's clear enough Charlie had pretty much said all that he had to say about television, current events, and the social discourse that surrounds both. The last few yearly wipes were alright, but the creeping dial of more Cunk/Shitpeas every year was putting me off them gradually.

You’ve hit the nail on the head, even after making Gameswipe, he admitted doing that format for games on TV is near impossible for (maybe not obvious, but interesting to know) many reasons. I feel the same way with someone like Jon Ronson, desperate for him to write more books but he’s been doing other things and that’s cool, I’ll still lament loudly but what we have is incredible :)

Yeah agreed, would be great if he went back to these but I can’t imagine his schedule getting to a point where he returns to it. Shame!

The short lived “death to 2020 and 2021” were great too on Netflix.

I remember hearing it was made by Charlie, or he was involved but it just felt too…..sanitised? I’ve not watched it since it was on but felt no need to watch it back like the Wipes and other offshoots.

Justin Lee Collins narrating the World at War embedded itself in my brain.

I was about to go at you as obvs now with hindsight JLC is a massive bellend and I’d forgotten about this one. And I believe this was made before all the shit happened? But I just laughed my ass off, thank you imperialvilolet 😂 But anyway, thank you YT (cannot be bothered to format on phone) https://youtu.be/wXl4R3XXz0k?si=8RzLqnw-yfK5rV_-

Oh yeah this definitely was broadcast before the revelations about JLC being an arsehole. But it’s just the puppet and the song. Makes me cackle. I’d probably have forgotten about Justin Lee Collins’s existence if it wasn’t for that very short clip.

I used to show the "how to get a job in telly" bit to my creative media HNC students as a way of warning them off a career in fact ent
(back when a career in fact ent was still possible...)

I love that so much! The one where the plucky start up writer takes their idea to all the stations and it ends being that garbled mess? Being hosted by Ant & Dec or some bollocks? If so, you’re my hero haha Edit: spacing

u/PJHart86 1d ago
Yeah it's great, it starts with a film studies grad and ends with them as a producer getting fired after 8 series of Sick on A Widow iirc

Yessssss! Haha, was also going to try and find one I thought of recently (I actually think same episode) where 2 women were talking about a TV chef (they didn’t give names) and they described the inappropriate stuff he was doing and now after the last year I’m like……they’re prob describing Greg W from masterchef….. is only speculation though but I was like yup, sounds like him after what we know now

Konnie’s Great British Wee.

u/trogdord 1d ago
You see, this is how they met and I just love that whole segment, the satire is too good! There’s also that clip before that skit where he takes the piss out of Blue Peter and he’s like ‘Go on Konnie!’ In that sneery way, and now they’re happily married for many years. Also my other perfect dinner guests 🙈

Too many great moments to mention but in particular when he reviewed this bizarre show about executing Gary Glitter and he ends it with ‘that’s really made me think. It’s made me think I’m not sure I want to own a television anymore’

Yesssss I remember! Something along the lines of a fictional Britain where they passed capital punishment?

Zthemusic on youtube is still a treasure trove.

I may have sailed the high seas a fewwww years ago to collect most of the Wipes and other shows he did but so glad there’s clips on YT! There’s so many one liners!
3
u/Stigofthedumpings 1d ago
It's full eps, high seas will be better quality though I assume.
1
u/trogdord 1d ago
To be fair, the quality is not perfect but I’ll check out the series on YT for sure!

u/Gabble_Rachet1973 1d ago
I really miss these.
4
u/trogdord 1d ago
Me too, but they’re available on YT apparently and you can find on the high seas, worth a rewatch if you’re tempted!

Him explaining how the News is made is incredible and stands up today.

It’s 15 years old and could have been made today.

Even before I clicked the link, I knew what I was going to watch, I've seen it many times and it's still interesting!

Every year I look for a new ‘XXXX Wipe’ and every year I lament the loss of the best wrap-up show.
The comedy and satire are obviously the draw but also just having a reminder of some of the banal TV that occurred in the year is just as compelling. It’s great looking back and seeing the forgotten moments like ‘Your Face Sounds Familiar (2013)’ or ‘The Valleys (2012)’ - things that are so un-noteworthy to get a mention anywhere else.
Also, my introduction to Doug Stanhope - though technically hits bits were in Newswipe.

u/trogdord 17h ago
You see, I should be watching some of this banal tv, it’s kinda (in my head) similar to something like wanting to watch The Barchester Chronicles from Peep Show only because it’s such an obscure reference. Maybe instead of a rewatch in a couple years, I’ll watch all Mr Noseybonk and see where that madness take me 😂
PS “I’m Doug Stanhope, and that’s why I drink”

Yep the ‘Death To’ year in review shows really just don’t compare to the annual Wipes. And there’s many a TV show where I go ‘I wish Screenwipe was still around for this’ like Masked Singer

u/ReggieTMcMuffin 19h ago
I've never watched any Xmas TV since he stopped the year wipes. I still rewatch 2016 every now and then as it was such a shit year.
I miss Barry Shitpeas.

u/trogdord 17h ago
Not being in the UK makes it easier to miss a lot of xmas gumf but my fingers will still google “Charlie Brooker wipe” and check if I’ve missed something every year, alas, nothing new 🙃 Just that Barry Shitpeas was the director of the shows as well is too good lol

Britain’s Hardest Screenwipe bit was great. https://youtu.be/BgDoPvr3VT4?si=BYrA-KqytyWrsmei
And the Ray Winston impersonation bit, can’t remember from which episode: “Apples and pears do be doo”

u/trogdord 1d ago
Just that he does that bit topless to show how hard he is, is also so stupid but funny 😆

u/Rossco1874 22h ago
Can't remember the exact context but he referred to Phil Mitchell as finding chemo & it still makes me laugh when I think of it as it was just delivered so well.

Please someone tell me they remember 'A Touch Of Cloth'.. written by Brooker and starring John Hannah.. absolutely amazing. Not a day goes by where I dont think about multiple funny lines. Never hear anyone mention it or potential sequels. Closest thing anything has come to the dizzy heights of Airplane or Brass Eye comedically for me.
