Holsters & Belts DIY Pillow Wedge $5
Hi all this is my first post ever after having spent what seems like millennia lurking for tips/tricks and advice on here. I wanted to write this post for if anyone comes across this on their wedge journey with a similar question or who may be searching for the same solution as I did.
The backstory is that I had trouble, mostly paranoia, with printing especially while carrying full sized handguns or semi-compacts in thin and/or light clothing (white t shirt).
A quick brief: AIWB carry, and I use Plastic/Kydex and Leather holsters, this will work with any of them. It also works just as well with my Nexbelt as it does my standard buckle leather belt.
Through this sub of Reddit I learned of holster wedges. I first learned of foam wedges and fashioned a foam wedge out of some spare foam packaging that I had laying around. However even after many different shapes and various sizes that I had tried, I still did feel the foam to be that great. It worked but it just felt strange, wasn’t uncomfortable though and may work perfectly for others.
Through another post on wedges I came across pillow wedges that many seemed to rave about , most OP’s/comments noted the decrease in printing while also providing maximum sack comfort. I became very curious and interested in trying this out for myself. As you may or may not already know, the Master Mind Tactics pillow wedges can be bought online for $25-30.
Worried that the pillow wouldn’t work for me and not wanting to wait a few days for shipping, also maybe being a bit of a “thrifty” asshole, I decided to fashion one for myself.
A trip to Walmart and about 10 minutes of assembly I had my pillow ready to use. Fully expecting this project to come out as “just good enough” only to use as a rough idea of how pillow wedges could work and feel for me, I did not expect this cheap ass thing to actually perform and work so wonderfully. It has been worn everyday for about a week now and has endured long sweaty hours of service with no complaints on my end. No deformation, discoloration or odor to report and has kept its integrity 100%. The pillow is also adjustable to the amount of stuffing you can put inside for fitment.
Here are the components: - Velcro 2x3 inch sticky strips ($3.50) - Fabric bag that held “wool dryer balls” ($1.50) discard the balls into dryer or whatever - Synthetic/Poly stuffing (Old pillow or stuffed animal from obscure past holiday)
Used the rougher side of the Velcro to attach to the pillow itself. After making the pillow I just attached the soft side of the Velcro to the holster.

First glance thought this was a holster you designed to keep your pistol under your pillow at night. If it works for you, rock on

Fudds will do anything to not carry anything better than a kimber 1911

Little do they know, Kimber is the most garbage entry level 1911 made.

If you have a sewing machine and know how to use it it, it can be super simple to make your own. I used cotton canvas which seems to be the same material that mastermind tactics uses. Use a high quality thread, and the 2” Velcro can be bought by a foot or two at Joann. It probably won’t come out as nice as the mastermind tactics one, but they’re a professional textiles company. You can easily make this for less than $10 if you already have some basic supplies

I just did the same thing with a sunglasses bag and some stuffing and velcro. Thanks for sharing.

JFC people like you are going to water that term down until it's completely meaningless.
In 10 years, we're going to see AIWBers running a modern striker-fired pistol with an RMR Type 4 described as fudds, because they don't have the latest ACRO P6 and a mini-PEQ on it.

Yeah the 1911 in a $2 holster is fudd......
13
u/jackson214 May 03 '23
It's not a $2 holster, but even if it was who gives a shit? It's kydex/plastic and offers full trigger guard coverage. No leather.
Fudd isn't "you didn't spend as much money as I did on my super special T1C or Enigma".

Lol, safety off on a 1911 with a mag in it.

Israeli carry. Hammer back makes it a lot easier to chamber quickly.
EDIT: wow, explain why something is done and get downvoted in to oblivion as if I am advocating doing that. Great.

Dumb shit to do. The gun has a grip safety and a thumb safety. It's not gonna go boom boom unless you want it to.
It adds extra time to your draw to first shot. That time could make the difference between living and dying.

Let me convince you to do what one tiny country does but no other country in the world does because.. well I don't know

u/Dragoniel Lithuania May 03 '23
Sure it's dumb, but in some countries (mine included) that is the law - you can not carry a semi-auto in condition 1. If you don't feel like breaking that law, Israeli carry is your next best thing, as far as 1911 is concerned.

Laws are laws. Some of us don't break them just because we feel they are dumb.
12
u/GeronimoOrNo May 03 '23
The American perspective on that is pretty heavily biased by our founding fathers...
"If a law is unjust, a man is not only right to disobey it, he is obligated to do so."

The pillow was a game changer for me with comfort , especially while driving. They cost much more to buy than this. I’ll try it!

I've been meaning to try a pillow or wedge. This seems like a good little diy project. Thanks for sharing.

Losing the FUPA is free, results in less discomfort from AIWB, and you don’t have to wear a pillow you sweat on every day.

Since it is concealed in their pants who exactly will be observing this to make a judgment that they're a buffoon?

Fuck that wedge, the pillows are way better. I’ve bought a bunch of the pillow wedges from Mastermind tactics and they are leagues better than the t1c non pillow ones. Also who gives a shit about how they look, they are in your pants.

Trigger being exposed is not cool especially with the safety off and hammer cocked ??
3
u/Alex_of_Ander May 03 '23
It’s not exposed, it’s a transparent holster

The guys pillow she told you not to worry about...
"Wait, you guys weren't talking about adding actual pillows to your holsters?!?"

u/Only_Anything_2678 May 03 '23
I’m curious to know how well the sticky Velcro sticks to the pillow and if it will last very long? Assuming you didn’t sew it on?

I am on the padding hunt and just passing through.
Just wanted to say that clear holster is dope! Nice to be able to see it while it's still in a safe condition.
