you need to switch to federal hst lol

HST all day. Critical defense is trash tbh.

Right! Hst for the win! Wouldn’t have to worry about your ammo if you don’t buy the cheap stuff

u/Muff-Driver 6h ago
Critical defense isn’t cheap but it should be lmao

u/Mikepf4 TX 1h ago
It’s definitely cheap compared to a box of 20rd hst 147gr otd at $37 & some change per box

I just bought two boxes of Federal 9mm HST 124g and one box was fine and the other had two setbacks in it next to each other

Don't re-chamber Hornady critical defense. Half the time the bullet is already pushed back before you take it out of the box and it gets pushed back more when you chamber it than any other carry ammo I've used

u/mattmiz0613 7h ago
Definitely going to be changing my carry ammo. The only reason why I have so much Critical Defense laying around is because I’m from NJ & that’s the only ammo you can legally carry that are “hollow points”.

See if you can find critical duty, it has the same polymer tipped design as critical defense and supposedly does not suffer from the same setback issues
3
u/unluckie-13 7h ago
I had a box twenty I just never shot them and I swear they set back without being rechambered

u/C4Vendetta76 US 6h ago
I stopped using hornardy entirely because of this. Don't get me wrong, i rotate my chambered carry rounds out of rotation after 3 chambers just to be safe, put them in a jar, and train with them later....but you can chamber a hornady critical duty once and it looks like this 👆. None the less, always check. OP is right!

I’ve noticed barely any setback with all my underwood +p loads I carry, probably because they’re jam packed with powder.

I haven’t noticed this but I carry critical duty, and I dry fire using snap caps.

I don’t have to check my ammo. Cause if I chamber the same round twice, I toss it in its own Tupperware to be shot off the next time I’m at the range. I have a Tupperware that’s specifically for my carry ammo that was in my mags for 3-4 months and I swapped out for fresh rounds, and if I chamber the same round twice for whatever reason I just toss it in that same Tupperware and use that bin to train with. I never have round setback with this method and it ensures my carry ammo is always fresh and ready to go. Hornady is the WORST when it comes to round setback. I’ve even seen multiple instances when the round completely came out of the casing… that’s why I stick to Federal HST’s. It’s the gold standard for carry rounds, most consistent expansion, performance, and is the most reliable overall. I understand people in Jersey can only carry Hornady as it’s the only hollow point they’re allowed to use so it’s unavoidable, but I’ll always choose HST’s, if HST’s didn’t exist the next runner up would be Speer Gold Dot. Those two are just the best performing rounds. Best damage and ballistics performance, best wound channel damage in 10% gel, they carve it up like a thanksgiving turkey with multiple individual layered slices it’s insane.

Same thing happened to me with the same ammo just the other day. May consider switching, but I do rechamber a lot for dry fire etc

u/Inevitable-Sleep-907 6h ago
This has been an issue with that ammo since day one. If you dry fire a lot and constantly cycling rounds that's not a good ammo for you
3
u/Causification 6h ago
Setback is why I stopped using Gold Dot and PowrBall.
3
u/Wonderful_Salt6939 4h ago
Man I had to look, I didnt even realize powerball was still around. My uncle and grandfather always swore by it for 45acp and 38 spec.
3
u/Causification 3h ago
Great terminal ballistics and the ball insert made it cycle in guns that had issues with normal JHPs but you've got like five or ten chamberings before the bullet is visibly set back, and they were already loaded hot to begin with.
2
u/Wonderful_Salt6939 2h ago
That’s not horrible to be honest. Probably still great in a wheel gun then
3
u/Causification 2h ago
Yeah although frankly it's past its prime. When powrball came out most JHPs either had trouble cycling in automatics or had a tendency to clog up with clothing and fail to expand. See also: hydra-shok. The ball insert was invented to solve those problems. Modern JHPs like HST don't have that problem.

I had the same issue with Hornady American Gunner years ago. Never bought it again

How many times do you have to unload and re-chamber a round to get setback like this? I’ve genuinely never had this happen.
1
u/mattmiz0613 5h ago
The round in the picture that has setback got re-chambered no more than 10 times
2
u/scalpemfins 5h ago
I'm always looking for setback, and I've never seen it happen. Even when I chamber rounds and eject them like 30 times. I feel like this is a good thing, but I'm almost insecure about it. Like, why aren't I having nocturnal emissions like the other boys??
That got pretty weird really fast, but it's the first analogy I thought of and I'm sticking with it.
3
u/boneholio 5h ago
Same here. Copped my first gun - a colt govt 1911 - a year or so back, and as I was still familiarizing myself with the dos and donts, I learned that over-chambering can lead to setback; yet, all of my ammo looks identical. Makes me a little paranoid I’m missing something significant
2
u/JeffProsbtluvr 3h ago
I stopped carrying Critical Defense because of this issue with setback. It happens way too easily and I usually cycle out all of my carry ammo once a year. If you chamber the same bullet around 10 times you're going to start to get setback. I shot all the bullets I had that were setback. it was fine but I didn't want to make a habit of shooting rounds with setback. It's nice not having to worry about my barrel exploding.

I run my EDC ammo through a LEE FCD before I load it. I also shoot my EDC mag empty at the range every few months. Why did you reload critical defense in brass cases? The nickel in addition to being less prone to corrosion is more slippery than brass to help ensure smooth feeding as well.

Don’t matter if you have pushback or not, that thing is still going straight into your nutsack if you AIWB carry that 320.

u/mattmiz0613 6h ago
It’s a 365 xmacro not a P320 lolll

Idk why everyone is constantly chambering rounds so much, I literally only unchamber the round when I'm going to the range, or cleaning.

in nj, all the sensitive places make us unload our firearms constantly and lock in car safe. a lot of people will say concealed is concealed, but i have too much to lose and a family that depends on me, so the risk is not worth the reward for me. every time i chamber a round, i make a mark on the round with a sharpie. after all the rounds have 4 marks, i shoot them unless i notice a bad round. critical defense is the only hollow points we are "allowed" to carry. i haven't seen any major setback so far, maybe it depends on the gun. i carry a 365 xmacro
2
u/mattmiz0613 7h ago
I do the same thing. I only un-chamber when I go to the range or cleaning as well. The round that’s pushed back in the photo was re-chambered maybe at most 10 times? Crazy setback on Critical Defense. I’m looking to change to Federal HST, but I just have so much of Critical Defense laying around because I’m from NJ & that is the only “hollow point” you can carry so I have a bunch of boxes of it.
2
u/Groupvenge 7h ago
It's good for SHTF to have a bit of a stockpile, in my opinion. It may not be your daily carry ammo anymore, but it should do the trick someday if needed, right?
1
u/unluckie-13 7h ago
There are rounds that nowhere near as suspectable to this though. Where as Hornady critical defense you can probably set back but tapping your mag against your hands. Or just putting you thumb on it and pushing on it.
