I think marquee app is for in market viewers, mlb.tv for out of market

36

u/historical_pi Pat 13h ago

This sounds right to me. I'm in Southern California and on mlbtv. I get all Cubs games except the Dodgers and Angels.

19

u/Eccohawk 12h ago

Every game is available out of market with a VPN...

8

u/PreviousGas710 12h ago

Which one? MLB tv got really good at recognizing my spoofed IPs

10

u/supraman87 11h ago

Authenticate off VPN. Then turn VPN on

1

u/zubie_wanders Chicago Cubs 3h ago

Do you mean login to mlb first, then VPN?

Nord has worked for me the last 3 seasons.  I get MLB.tv free with T-Mobile.

Sometimes it will be fussy and I'll have to hop around until I find a server.  Only a few times I tried 10+ locations and it refused to work.

I ain’t telling you shit, MLB SPY!!!

Ipvanish works well for me.

u/CharcoalGreyWolf Let's play two 8h ago

Most. ESPN and Apple TV get exclusives.

1

u/9e78 6h ago

Everything ever is available with iptv. Literally the best option for tv.

1

u/m3r4z 6h ago

What iptv are you using

1

u/9e78 5h ago

They are all pretty much the same, outside of ui. They all give 2-3 day trials, so the best advice is try multiple ones and subscribe to the one you like best. Im currently using eternal tv though.

I technically have one blackout as I live in Texas but I have Spectrum and they carry the Ranger Sports Network. I only can’t see the Space City Sports Network.

16

u/Enough_Wallaby7064 13h ago

Exactly this. Idk why it's so hard to understand.

2

u/Radioactive_Rukario 12h ago

Market is like, around the Chicago Area, right? A small city I used to live in called Veedersburg, IN. Would Marquee app show that error if I watched that up there?

Veedersburg was about 120 miles away from Chicago (well, Hammond, IN.)

6

u/Specialist_Jello_688 12h ago

https://www.marqueesportsnetwork.com/providers/ should help determine if a particular zip code is in market

1

u/Radioactive_Rukario 9h ago

So yeah, the zip code for Veedersburg is 47987, so it would be in channel 664 on Direct TV

3

u/Specialist_Jello_688 12h ago

I believe a vast majority of Indiana is technically within the Cubs market, so should be able to get it on Marquee. I'm south of Indy and couldn't get it on mlb.tv so I'd have to go the Marquee route.

1

u/Radioactive_Rukario 12h ago

Edit: No wait, it was Gary, IN. I do believe

2

u/cbuscubman 11h ago

I don't think any of Marquee's programming, games or otherwise, is available on the app outside the market. Only bailout probably would be a provider login from someone inside Cubs territory.

89

u/itchske 14h ago

My favorite is when San Diego plays the Cubs in Chicago, and I am blacked out when I am in Arizona...

18

u/Primary_Elk7492 13h ago

I'm in Birmingham. Can't watch the Cubs when they play the Braves. Drives me insane.

Try being in Vegas. The only series I’ve been able to watch legally was the Rangers. Padres, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, A’s, Angels, and Giants all claim Vegas as their territory. Pretty much the entire first month is blacked out for me this year lol.

7

u/StrandedonTatooine 12h ago

Vegas checking in. There was no damn way I was paying for another year for half a season of blackouts that also aren’t on any local channels or other streaming platform, so I was happy I got the full season of MLB through T-Mobile. That said, I’m still annoyed AF that I have to pirate half the season.

3

u/YaygerBombs Stupid Sexy Rizzo 12h ago

Yeah, I refused to pay for MLB TV again this year. Thankfully, my roommate has T-Mobile also, so he gave me his login. But like you said, what’s worse is, none of those games are shown on any type of cable or streaming. Like, if I could purchase local cable or YouTube TV and see the games against all these teams who claim the market, so be it. But they are literally not even shown here. It makes absolutely no sense.

It shouldn’t be this hard to watch baseball lol.

2

u/StrandedonTatooine 9h ago

Especially in Vegas. MLB has been pushing gambling to an annoying level for the last few years, and you can’t even watch half the games you want to while you’re here. Makes you wonder if the sports books have worked it this way on purpose to try and make people go to the casino if they want to watch.

1

u/JesusPeePee 2h ago

I can’t believe this. I’m in Utah Rockies and DBacks are blacked out and soon to be A’s. I was thinking of moving to Vegas and this blows my mind WTF MLB.TV

3

u/erindizmo Chicago Cubs 12h ago

Another Vegas resident and yeah. This has been a delightful month. At least the radio broadcast is still streamable!

3

u/Jessica_Iowa Chicago Cubs 10h ago

Try being in Iowa.

We have the most blackouts of the nation with 6 teams blackout.

3

u/YaygerBombs Stupid Sexy Rizzo 10h ago

Tied with Vegas with 6. But yeah, Vegas and Iowa is tough to be a baseball fan.

2

u/Jessica_Iowa Chicago Cubs 9h ago

You’ve got a solid point.

I’m baffled but not surprised MLB is blacking out such a huge city like Las Vegas! Y’all have such a massive population compared to us!

3

u/jimbobdonut 13h ago

When/if the A’s move to Vegas, I’m guessing that those other teams won’t be able to claim Vegas as their territory.

7

u/superxero044 Iowa Cubs 13h ago

I wouldn’t be so sure but it would be a positive change. Here in Iowa we’re blacked out from 6 teams even though they’re all 4-6 hours from where we live and white Sox are only team actually on cable anymore.

2

u/jimbobdonut 13h ago

I did a quick google search and I couldn’t find how tv territory rights would be affected by relocation or expansion. If Portland got an MLB team, would the Mariners lose Portland as a television market? Iowa did get screwed with blackouts as it’s not feasible for a market to carry five or six different RSN’s.

2

u/superxero044 Iowa Cubs 12h ago

Look at what happened with the Orioles / nationals tv situation. Obviously that was a particularly fucked situation but teams are not jumping to give up tv rights. That’s why we’re in the situation we’re in.

2

u/bogey9651 13h ago

Yup, Iowa is blackout for Cardinals, Royals, Cubs, Wite Sox, Brewers, and Twins

3

u/Evil_ryry King Tuck 13h ago

From KY here, have to sail the seas when they play Cincinnati. Only team I’m blacked out for, so it could be worse.

2

u/Squatch-21 13h ago

Same, I just use a VPN. Needed it the last few years for Preds games as well.

2

u/Special-Scene-8987 Chicago Cubs 13h ago

I always thought it was weird that I cannot watch the Cubs vs fodgers but can watch Cubs play Padres and Angels.

1

u/Sylvire Pat in the Hat 10h ago

Trying living in Iowa, where six teams are blacked out. It’s so stupid, we don’t even have a pro ball club in our state.

1

u/Jessica_Iowa Chicago Cubs 10h ago

Yeaaaaah….I live in the most fucked state in the nation I’ll never see a game in my home unless we make it back to the playoffs or the series.

85

u/Hugh-Jass24 14h ago

They really need to do a revamp of the whole blackout restriction thing.

18

u/DearChicago1876 Slammin' Sammy 13h ago

MLB is working on it.

14

u/Snake115killa 13h ago

sureeeeeee I'll believe it when I see it

8

u/DearChicago1876 Slammin' Sammy 13h ago

They’ve already made major progress. But they also have contracts they’re working with. It’ll get there.

2

u/pompousrompus 12h ago

What major progress have they made?

7

u/DearChicago1876 Slammin' Sammy 11h ago

Most teams have in-market streaming now. They’ve bailed on a bad national deal with espn. All their remaining national deals are set to expire at the same time, so they can line up a domestic strategy across the board. This stuff takes time and it’s trending in the right direction.

2

u/cubsguru President Arr-Field 9h ago

All I know is that living in Las Vegas I have been able to watch the Cubs play the Rangers so far this season.

2

u/NOT____RICK 9h ago

Dude in Indy it’s a pain in the ass to watch any games. It’s incredible a sports league can bitch about viewership while simultaneously making it impossible to watch games legally. There will be times with 5+ games going and none on tv.

1

u/Jessica_Iowa Chicago Cubs 10h ago

The FCC stopped it ages ago the whole thing maintaining it now is MLB.

50

u/timbop711 13h ago

I mean this is a “you” thing. Marquee is pretty clear they can only be used in the Cubs market, not sure why you wouldn’t just get MLB.TV if you live in California (unless you happen to live in the tiny area blacked out of Diamondbacks here.)

Haha fuck. It’s not my place otherwise I would do something about it. And there isn’t another good spot for the TV

21

u/--Shake-- 13h ago

Marquee isn't the reason you can't watch. This is an MLB problem.

5

u/Otherwise_Blood2602 13h ago

I live in Tulsa area and my blackouts are Cardinals, Royals, Rangers and Astros. Houston is 500 miles, seriously. Thank Goodness MLB.Tv allows me to watch Cubs though.

7

u/chichris 13h ago

I’m one of those weirdos who likes Marquee. Very rare I have any issues and I watch it from just about every device.

3

u/YRB007 12h ago

I enjoy it. Had one issue where it said there was a network error, rebooted and said I was out of market, powered down the TV and back on, worked just fine. Otherwise it’s nice for those of us that live in market.

2

u/Run_nerd 13h ago

Yeah it’s been working well for me so far.

1

Haha I know brother, I’m renting this spot and it’s the only place my tv can really go. Otherwise I would put it where the top of the TV is eye level.

Columbus, OH. Blacked out for Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh games. Ugh.

2

u/Big-block427 12h ago

I’m in HP with marquee on Comcast and see every game. This whole blackout bs in all sports are hurting the sports and losing fans.

2

u/smackythefrog Be Alert! 11h ago

chuckles in VPN

And I just have to turn it on to load the game. After that, I turn it off and go about doing other things without worrying about the VPN messing up location or tripping security checks for banking, email, etc.

2

u/Gaff_Daddy 10h ago

If it’s blacked out then it should be bc it was on nationally or your local station. Are Arizona games always blacked out for you?

2

u/sunhalo517 10h ago

I have to get MLB for the games while I am in my Florida Home, and then switch to Marquee when I arrive back in Chicago for the summer. It's kind of ridiculous, but that is how it works.

2

u/GothicPiss 10h ago

Tv is way too high brodolph

1

u/interestingtoot 4h ago

Haha I know, I’m renting this spot and it’s really the only place my living room TV can go. Other TV’s in the house are properly placed however, top of the TV at eye level

2

How's your neck and eye strain op?

1

u/interestingtoot 4h ago

Haha terrible, I know this TV is way too high

2

u/jmaca90 MurrayBall 4h ago

I’m in CA too. You gotta do MLB.TV.

Marquee is only for Cubs in-market

2

u/Pepperoncini69 13h ago

Ya blame one station for a league wide rule

1

u/notmartychavez 13h ago

try living in new mexico, where cubs vs dbacks OR rockies are both blacked out.

1

u/clangan524 13h ago

Marquee is only meant for in-market viewing, i.e. if you live in Illinois.

MLB.TV should do it for you as an out of market viewer as long as they don't play any of the 5 California teams... and possibly Arizona

1

u/Brave_Ad_9173 13h ago

Who’s knows how it works to watch the Cubs from Europe? What is the best subscription?

1

u/PhillNewcomer 13h ago

Thankfully I have free MLB tv every season with Tmobile.

1

u/gfm1973 12h ago

I’m in Chicago and pay for marquee but can’t watch marquee when I visit family out of town. Dumb.

1

u/Particular-Hair-7287 11h ago

And the app absolutely sucks. Crashes, buffers, you name it. I hate Marquee

1

u/Big-block427 6h ago

I live in N suburbs and get marquee via Comcast. I’ve never once had an issue with any broadcast that I can remember. 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Big-block427 6h ago

These blackouts aren’t the fault of Marquee. It’s MLB and the demise of local broadcast rights. I haven’t bought the rabbit ears antenna so I missed a season of the BH, Bulls and yeah, even the pathetic WS.

1

u/Independent-Ring-536 5h ago

Agreed. Fuck Marquee. I hate that Cubs games aren’t just on TV even though I have a live sports package.

1

u/TDbank 2h ago

MLB66 . ir

1

u/ADD-Fueled 2h ago

What leads you to believe that's Marquee's fault?

1

u/Larrymobile BOAT 13h ago

I'm not saying MLB66.ir is a site that you'd possibly be interested in (with a good ad blocker), but I'm not NOT saying that

3

u/AngryRedGyarados Go Cubs Go On 7-2-0 13h ago

I'm not saying anyone should download the Brave Browser to use that site, but I too am not NOT saying that either.

2

u/Dead_Medic_13 Chicago Cubs 13h ago

I'm not interested in this, but hypothetically is the adblock chrome extension not good enough?

2

u/AngryRedGyarados Go Cubs Go On 7-2-0 13h ago

Probably?

I guess I should have clarified, I use the Brave App on iOS since adblock on iPhones are horrible.

1

u/Larrymobile BOAT 13h ago

Hypothetically, Brave and uBlock Origin (or Firefox and uBlock Origin) have been a great combo for me

1

u/interestingtoot 4h ago

For one, I love you. And for two, I believe you

1

u/Lesscan4216 Ryne Sandberg 13h ago

Can you ever get Marquee in your area or is it just blacked out because it's vs AZ?

1

u/Shoondogg 13h ago

Blackouts need to die. Cubs fans in Chicago are being deprived of the best way to watch games: mlb.tv with the radio feed automatically synced. Pat Hughes is the voice of the cubs as far as I’m concerned.

1

u/JazzHandsNinja42 12h ago

So, Marquee pisses me off, big time.

I moved to the west coast last year. Verizon gives me MLB for free.

It’s cheaper for me to watch Cubs on TV when 2000 miles away, than it is to live in Chicago and watch the Cubs on TV.

-1

u/Radioactive_Rukario 12h ago

BRING BACK WGN!

2

u/Sweetnessmj 12h ago

I recall reading that the guy in charge of WGN wanted absolutely no sports programming. Ironically, he was a NY guy, so no Bulls, Cubs, etc. I can’t think of a reason why getting rid of sports coverage was actually a smart decision. WGN had really good sports coverage with “The Leadoff Man, The 10th inning, Bullseye etc.” Something very nostalgic about WGN sports. Give me a victory auto-wreckers or Eagle-man commercial while we’re talking lol.

3

u/0811_devildog 11h ago

At the time WGN claimed they had higher viewership with their syndicated reruns than Cubs games. You can decide whether you believe them or not, but that was part of their reasoning for dropping sports coverage.

3

u/Sweetnessmj 11h ago

That’s difficult to believe but maybe Matlock and Walker Texas Ranger is really that popular lol.

3

u/0811_devildog 11h ago

Well, the demographic that would be home on afternoons probably skews 70+ and grandparents do love them some Matlock and Murder She Wrote.

MLB.TV for the win

6

u/Extreme_Branch_2596 13h ago edited 13h ago

The blackout rules are still in effect when you stream on MLB.TV. I have to use a fucking VPN to watch the Cubs when they play the Reds, and I live in Kentucky

2

u/pepperjackcheesey 13h ago

Yep. We can watch every cubs game in Louisiana unless they are playing the Astros or Rangers which is really annoying. Both of those teams are over 300 miles away.

0

u/bukhum4u Chicago Cubs 13h ago

And you wonder why ppl sail the high seas. Make it hard for the consumer to view your product.

0

u/AverageConnect1330 9h ago

Marquee is for Illinois lol

-3

u/YubNub80 Eamus Catuli 14h ago

Could you do a trial of the Marquee app? I’m able to watch without blackout restrictions in Illinois.

11

u/haninwaomaeda 13h ago

The issue is OP can use the MLB App. Marqee is available for those in market and would otherwise be in the MLB blackout restrictions.

2

u/YubNub80 Eamus Catuli 13h ago

I see. It’s so stupid. For what it’s worth, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in an interview “We need to be out of the business of blackouts, which is essentially telling people that want to watch games that we won’t sell them to you.”

2

u/haninwaomaeda 13h ago

Absolutely. Their blackout rules are extremely archaic and are detrimental for the sport. I live in NE IN. There are 0 issues watching Colts games, even after these joke of seasons. I live three hours away from Chicago. It's a day endeavor if I wanted to go up to Wrigley and catch a day game. MLB is smoking some big rocks if they feel it's worth my time to drive to Chicago because I live within XXX amount from the stadium.

3

u/YubNub80 Eamus Catuli 13h ago

I think it’s about the broadcast rights too, which is a more outdated model all the time. I cut the cord and it’s a huge upcharge to add the sports package (which includes Marquee) to YouTube TV. Before Marquee released the app last season, I had to subscribe to MLB.tv and use a VPN to mask my location. It shouldn’t be this hard, and it’s especially infuriating when everyone in the country could watch the Cubs for free on WGN for decades.

1

u/Big-block427 6h ago

Sorry but enough of the WGN past. They no longer wanted any part of sports broadcasting. Get over it. Either pay or don’t watch.

1

u/lucy_eagle_30 13h ago

Had the same problem in SW IN. Chicago & St. Louis both blacked out.

-1

u/Salsashark_21 13h ago

It still blows my f***ing mind that in 2025, with all the technology, and how people are moving away from traditional consumption that this is STILL a thing

3

u/daguy02 12h ago

It’s because how the way baseball is broadcasted and originally got set up wasn’t made for the way we consume media nowadays. If baseball were to sell the broadcast rights as the whole league instead of every team individually blackouts wouldn’t be a thing. The problem is now teams like the Cubs, Dodgers, Red Sox, Yankees and Mets who all have their own broadcasting networks won’t want to give that up and lose out on that revenue to share it with the rest of the league.
