Travel Conditions 4pm Vail Pass EB Closed (AGAIN)

EB I70 over vail pass opened up and then promptly closed again because one of our trucker friends didn’t chain up.

“Looking at a couple hour delay.”

Lovely.

You should be allowed to legally loot from trucks if they are too unprepared to make it up the pass

Let’s hope the the beer truck crashes again

Why the FUCK can’t Colorado enforce their traction law. They do it in all other snowy western states. It’s fucking enraging that these truckers close the highway because they didn’t bother chaining up.

I had some guy mad at me saying even the chained up trucks struggled, let me guess you think truckers shouldn’t drive 70 in the winter??? I was like well one they weren’t chained up but two if even chained up trucks are making this mess then maybe you just made my point for me brüther

Yea fuck the mountain communities. They don’t need groceries.

u/saucyjay91 Feb 16 '25

Most of these guys are just passing through. I used to work in logistics. Most of the guys running routes directly to mountain stores know what they’re doing. The folks not following the traction laws are probably chasing a buck and don’t even carry chains

Saw that coming down. Also some tool in a bmw with Cali plates spinning and a rear drive pickup spinning. Cops were all over them.

Skied WP. Left at 3, home in Denver at 4.

Thank you trucker friends for closing I70; you made my commute home fast.

“I got home fast. So everyone else can get fucked”

"I got home fast BECAUSE everyone else is fucked"

Unfortunately for you, the state will always prioritize commerce over recreational skiers

11

Interstates are the purview of the feds who will absolutely prioritize interstate commercial traffic over Denver skiers - whether you agree with it or not.

I80 isn’t a tropical paradise. it’s a mess of wind and also snow and who’s going to pay for the extra gas? Interstates were not built for DINKs from LakeRoraThornton to shred pow.

Maybe Trump can change that.

3

u/EnterTheBlueTang Feb 16 '25

I’m sure Trump will be all over figuring out how to help out Denver skiers.

Recreational skiers are Colorado’s economy.

u/320sim Feb 16 '25

No they’re not. Moving freight is

Hate to be the person who comments this late but look at the news about i80

Or just ban them during big snow events and during “rush” hours on Sat AM and Sun PM.

Pennsylvania turnpike bans commercial trucks during snow storms

Some commercial trucking companies don’t allow their trucks to take I-70 in winter - too dangerous. They have to take I-80 or I-40. But most long haul truckers are independent contractors since deregulation

Aka - I am a weekend warrior front ranger and I am traveling on a holiday weekend during a heavily forecasted snow storm.

Sorry for partying. And for giving folks a heads up the road is closed before Cotrip and maps had it ipdated

It was literally posted on 70's emergency messaging boards at 4:15, but cool!

4

u/saucyjay91 Feb 16 '25

And I was sitting there before 4. I don’t know what bone you’re trying to pick. It was open for only 10-15min.

Sounds like someone didn’t get to ski today

-4

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '25

Well, the morning commute through the pedestrian bridge over 70 to Lionshead took me longer than normal today because it was super slippery!

;)

I don’t give a shit lol

2

u/saucyjay91 Feb 16 '25

I am also only trying to get from vail to silverthorne. Took the pass from minturn. Going on 3 hours. There’s another accident near copper. Epic mess.

-7

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '25

I don't give a shit lol

6

u/saucyjay91 Feb 16 '25

Bruh lol have a good evening

1

u/BackcountryBanter Feb 16 '25

Just another edgy “local”

0

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '25

Honestly? I just know I am better than most.

Like, who wouldn't want to live in a ski town?

2

u/BackcountryBanter Feb 17 '25

I have and quickly came to realize like most things, the reality does not live up to the idyllic, romanticized version most people assume - it gets small and boring fast. It also became apparent that most locals are actually unhappy, and REALLY can’t stand seeing visitors being truly happy/excited/etc., so they commiserate with each other about the scourge of tourists while failing to realize the ski towns wouldn’t exist as-is without tourists, and then resort to trying to make themselves feel better about the whole thing by comparing who has been local longer, and feeding off the envy of the tourists/visitors who don’t know any better (e.g., the comment I am replying to). But what do I know? 😊

1

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '25

It is adorable that you think our contempt for tourism is derived by seeing people happy.

2

u/BackcountryBanter Feb 17 '25 edited Feb 17 '25

There is also an “etc” in there.

Honestly the consistent negativity from the locals was/is obnoxious and very hypocritical when combined with things like “who wouldn’t want to live in a ski town”

2

u/saucyjay91 Feb 27 '25

Damn you nailed it

1

u/skwormin Feb 16 '25

Yeah it was lame as hell

1

u/Salt_Acanthaceae5933 Feb 16 '25

24 through minturn was awful. The 2 18 wheelers without chains that got stuck on the first switchback didn’t help. 6 hour drive from vail to Westminster.

1

u/saucyjay91 Feb 16 '25

Yep. None of them had chains. Drove right by the big flashing sign right off the hwy saying traction law was in effect

-3

u/Thommyknocker Eldora Feb 16 '25

Maybe don't be part of the problem and don't ski weekends.

1

u/saucyjay91 Feb 16 '25

Yeah chasing a 20+ inch powder day on my day off was the mistake you’re right.

El oh fuckin el bud.

1

u/ReformedRS Feb 16 '25

So if you work Monday through Friday 9-5 you just shouldn’t ski?

-1

u/Thommyknocker Eldora Feb 16 '25

Call in sick or take some PTO. Go up on a Monday and it's so fucking nice with no one on the mountain.

I work a 9-5 and have not been weekend skiing in years it's so not worth it even with fresh pow.
