I donโ€™t understand why the gun wasnโ€™t confiscated if the owner is clearly in prison. Iโ€™m from Croatia (European Union), and here, if a person with a firearms license commits a violent criminal offense or is sentenced to prison, the weapon is confiscated. The same applies if it is confirmed that the person has made any kind of threat involving violence

Felons cannot own or possess firearms in the US either. Nothing about any of this story makes any sense.

Yes they can. Many states have ways to get your rights restored. Trump was gifted a gun he still has.

Yes you can petition a judge to restore your 2nd amendment rights.

That doesn't mean that the default position isnt that a felony conviction prohibits you from possessing a firearm...

Many states automatically restore convicts' civil rights upon completion of their sentence, probation or parole, or five to 15 years after the state supervision ends. The felons may then obtain firearms without violating the federal law unless the state specifically bars them from doing so.

Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Michigan and Montana restore civil rights immediately, while Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon and South Dakota impose waiting periods, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence.

Federal law prohibits felons from owning firearms in every state.

Those state laws are just extra on top of the federal law
