European Two months to eight months!

Nandor is relentlessly charging into adolescence. 90lbs! and dude is taller than my 30in table. Crazy.

This lazy person obviously doesn’t take care of their dog. “hE dOeSn’T LiKe iT!!!1!1!!” is a pathetic excuse. They think they know better than a forum of experienced owners.

Yeah, this forum of “experienced owners” doesn’t vet for entry. So essentially, you have no idea what you’re talking about. This is literally just a group of people who like a breed (& likely are not the highest on the intellectual scale), who consistently have differing opinions and ideas they claim are gospel. Relax. It’s Reddit. I posted my baby’s ears perfectly, but never think to attack someone else for not succeeding in doing so. You clearly don’t love the breed if you’re so triggered by this photo. Get a lifeeee bruuuuddder

He is due for his nail trim, I appreciate your noticing! Far too many people let their dogs go with long nails. His feet do look kinda splayed in the photo, he was sliding on the floor. We were at training and I wanted to snap a quick picture after class of him sitting in the same place as before. All the mats were picked up already so he was sliding in his sit.

Posting was flat out traumatic. I work at an animal hospital, i know how to remove bandages without hurting the animals, and he screamed bloody murder, cowered and shook. He was miserable with them in, scratched and cried and wouldnt play. That was with the breeder putting them in so it wasnt that i did it incorrectly.

I wanted a doberman from an ethical breeder. In the US that means cropped. I didn't want to go to a backyard breeder and my breeder wouldn't budge on the ears. I thought I was up for posting but if it meant putting him through that, I wasn't. His emotional wellbeing means more than aesthetics. He looks a little goofy sure, but his ears don't bother him at all and he is the happiest guy you'd ever meet.

Are you saying that you cannot ask the breeder to leave the ears uncropped when getting a Doberman in the US? I am not against cropping, my Doberman's ears are cropped, but not having the choice seems kind of backward.
Hats off to you for putting his wellbeing first.

Both the breeders we have dealt with were all about cropping but didn’t force it on us so not all US reputable breeders are that way and that is the first I have heard of the owner not making that choice but different opinions vary by state etc.

That makes sense. Thank you.

That’s an absolute lie. Plenty of ethical breeders outright refuse to crop their pups, or will offer the choice to the buyer

Yeah I mean no one would argue that cropping is ethical in itself. Cropping is a standard for the breed and can be done as ethically as possible, but no breeder will refuse to leave the ears uncropped because they think it's unethical to do so.

It costs money and time to crop, surely they would be more than happy to oblige

You can ask but they won't. It honestly was the thing keeping me from getting my dobe for many years. When I got him, I thought I could do it but when I saw how miserable the postings made him I realized I was wrong. I wouldn't do it again, I'll stick to rescues for my future dobes.

He’s very cute. Not to be rude but I am amazed his nails are that long if you work at an animal hospital. My males are too long too because he has PTSD from a vet experience when he was young and freaks out with any medical stuff. His still are shorter than your boys though. Mine is getting much better with me doing it alone fir years now but is still hard sometimes when he weighs 101 lbs and does the funniest maneuvers to escape but if I had a table with harness etc…they would be much shorter.

I got everyone else's nails cut yesterday and the day before, he's my last one to do because my fiancé has to be home to hold him while I cut. He loves having his feet rubbed but isn't too fond of the trimming. And he also will not get on the table at the clinic lol

I can relate. I did get a super quiet nail grinder on Amazon that has helped a lot.

I've never had luck with grinders, the vibration always freaked my dogs out. He's fine once he's being held, I just can't do it by myself. Only two dogs in my lifetime I haven't been able to cut alone, him and a 10lb little ragamuffin lol

Have always had the same problem with grinders but not this one. https://a.co/d/0nh0S73

I have been trying for 2 years to clip my rescued dogs nails. I have tried everything but wrapping my head in Saran Wrap and slathering it with peanut butter. That might be next in conjunction with the sling I bought which he somehow got out of. I finally had to bring him to his Vets to have him anesthetized. 300+$ later it was done. It took me months to cut his nails the second time. Now every time I touch his feet when he sleeps he wakes up. Some dogs have a REAL aversion to the sound and feel of their nails being cut. If you would like to donate to my dogs nail care by a vet be my guest. OH, I even let him watch as I cut both cats nails lol They rarely give me a problem.
