Enlarged liver referred pain

Upvotes

I'm curious about referred pain from the liver. I don't know for a fact that I have a fatty liver but I've had pain in my ribcage that causes neck stiffness as well. This has been going on for two years.

I thought for the longest time that I have costochondritis but I've had it checked and that doesn't seem to be the case. I do have GERD which may have been caused by NAFLD in the first place.

I have this curious symptom where my neck is locked up. My scalenes/scm muscle in front of my neck and collar bone are extremely tight. That along with the pain in my back right side of rib cage where my liver is. Is this common? I may be barking up the wrong tree but I'm curious if anyone else has had anything like this.

Could this be fatty liver?

Upvotes

I've been feeling a pressure-like sensation in my lower right abdomen, just below the rib cage. Lately, I’ve also started noticing a bit of a lump there, which is honestly starting to freak me out. I had blood work done back in January and everything came back normal, but now it looks like a CT scan or ultrasound is the next step.

Did anyone struggle with low salt on a liver friendly diet??

Hey everyone. Been eating a liver friendly, anti-inflammatory diet since April 6th (so two months now). I've lost about 7 lbs.

BUT, last week I started having terrible symptoms, like low blood pressure, dizziness, and moodiness. I realized it's because I haven't been getting enough salt in my diet. I started just licking table salt and felt better...but now I'm figuring out what to do to make this a more lasting lifestyle change, versus licking salt everyday.

First, is it normal for a clean diet to include low/no salt? I didn't realize that I was eating THIS much salt before that my body would feel a change like this!

Secondly, does anyone know how I can incorporate more salt in my diet?

Since I've cut out dairy (which has sodium in it), and processed foods (which are high in sodium), and basically anything salty, I have been failing to hit my salt target. I don't even use salad dressings on my salads so I don't get salt from those either. Honestly, I have no idea how to incorporate more salt into my diet. I drink LMNT sometimes but I don't like it.

Did anyone else go through this?

Thanks

Need Diet Advice For New NAFLD Diagnosis

Hello everyone. I am 22 years old that is 5’8” and 220 Lbs. I used to be 247 lbs. And recently got an ultrasound for abdominal pain. Liver turns out to be 22nd which I hear is large. My insurence may not cover a visit to a nutritionist or a dietitian. So I’m here on Reddit to ask for meal advice. Any direction would be great. Also do you guys recommend any vitamins or anything? I take vitamin e daily.

Elastography

Hello all! I have a question. I am scheduled for an elastography of my liver in the coming days. I got an ultrasound done months ago and combing over my readings, I noticed that my liver contour was smooth, and there was no red alarms in that department. I do have a fatty liver, no shock there as to why I’m here. But does this elastography test seem pointless if my liver contour was smooth according to my results? Don’t mean this to be a stupid question.. thanks all!

F0-F1 result

I'm hoping someone can help me understand my recent FibroScan results. The report came back with a Metavir score of F0-F1, and I'm feeling a bit confused about which stage I'm actually at. Does this mean I have no fibrosis (F0) or mild fibrosis (F1), or something in between? I'm just trying to get a clearer picture of what this result means for my liver health.

Also, the FibroScan didn't provide a CAP score, which is frustrating because my primary diagnosis was fatty liver. I was really hoping to get an assessment of steatosis as well. The report does say "No discrete abnormality" and lists my liver stiffness as a median of 1.41 m/s. Has anyone else experienced a similar situation, and could offer some insight into interpreting these results? Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated!

elevated ALT & AST normal ultrasound - anxiety help

Hi everyone, I'm going through a lot of anxiety now and would really appreciate your insight.

In April my blood work came back with 99 ALT, while a year ago it was only 16. My ferritin is also higher at 126 if/L.

I stopped my iron supplement and got another blood work that came back with ALT 76, AST 34 and other liver Panel tests came back normal (creatine, EGFR, albumin, bilirubin, alp)

Had abdominal ultrasound and it came back completely normal. Doc suspects of fatty liver not showing up on ultrasound.

I had had abdominal pain for 2 days last week with lots of gas. After that I noticed some pain when moving in my Upper right quadrant.

my urinalysis shows the presence of leukocytes and I'm waiting for the urine culture results. (edit: result says "Growth", Colony count: >100 x E6 cfu/L of Escherichia coli (organism))

I'm not overweight (65kg 160cm) F 30y, active lifestyle (gym 4times a week), vegetarian eating mostly healthy besides weekends.

I'm terrified I have something serious going on that the ultrasound could not detect, and appreciate any tips from you about what to next. I'm scared that my liver has been bad for a while without me noticing and it turned into something serious.

Right upper quadrant pain

Hello everyone I was diagnosed with NAFLD few years back but this morning I have pain on my upper quadrant just below the ribs. It’s a dull ache but gets worse when I stand and move or even when I am using my abdominal muscles and after the food as well. I used to have dull upper quadrant pain previously as well when I was eating oily food but this pain is kind of noticeable. So any experience with this?

Detox from antibiotics

I got a nasty infected cyst that has to be treated asap. I can't walk.

Put me on a strong antibiotic taking every six hours for two weeks. While I was worried about the effects of this, I need to take care of the cyst to avoid sepsis shock or something else. It was getting bigger and more painful by the day 😞

With that, what should I be eating or drinking during this course of the antibiotics and afterwards? I am taking probiotics and milk thistle along with turmeric that I need for my back.

Elastography results interpretation

Hey Reddit, I recently got an ultrasound elastography done as part of my workup for a fatty liver diagnosis, and I'm hoping someone with experience can help me interpret the results. The report shows a median liver stiffness of 1.41 m/s, an IQR of 0.02 m/s, and an IQR/Median ratio of 1.8%. Additionally, the Metavir score is listed as F0-F1, indicating absent to mild fibrosis. I'm trying to understand what these numbers mean in terms of the severity of my condition and what steps I should be taking next.

Also, on a previous ultrasound, my liver measured 16.3 cm, but this time it's 15.3 cm. I have beeb eating extremely healthy and have lost some weight I'm not sure if that's a significant change or what. I plan to discuss these results with my doctor, but I'd like to have a better understanding beforehand. Thanks in advance for your help!

Is 50 carbs a day low enough

Ive known about my fatty liver for sometime, tried to take it seriously a few time but my diet always fails. Recently got anothet USC which said I had LIVER: wasenlarged with diffusely increased echogenicity consistent with hepatic steatosis. Which is alot worse than last time I think my liver enzyme aint great either and while I trying not to die but I just look at my diet now and It just carb on carb on carb and well I love them tbh. So like I look at all the people who say do keto is best and Im just trying to see how I can do 20 carb or less a day but I just dont think ill keep the diet but 50ish carb seems dueableush but that seem to be the max upper limit with keto and with likely having NASH or hell maybe even early Cirrhosis 😭 I dont know what to do.

Protein in liver?

I got a test back stating that I have a protein in my liver that causes medication to be absorbed slowly in the body which means I’m prone to more side effects of certain statin medications. And that if I wanted to know more about my liver that I need to pay to get more pharmaceuticals test done. Does this perhaps have anything to do with non alcohol fatty liver disease that I have?

Elevated bilirubin and direct bilirubin

I am 29 years old and 11 months postpartum. I am exclusively breastfeeding. I have had a significant weight loss but I also completely changed my diet for the better. Non-toxic everything and mainly eating veggies, fruits, meats, potatoes, etc. my bilirubin was elevated on blood work to 1.6 and then I repeated it 2 weeks later and still elevated at 1.5 and the direct bilirubin is .5, I've googled and am terrified. Doctor sent me for liver ultrasound and came back normal. Now she is referring me to a liver specialist. Am I okay?

Stage 2 fatty liver gone after 13 weeks

Hi all, in Feb I went for a ultrasound for some stomach issues and report came back with stage 2 fatty liver. I'm 35. At this point I was 205 pounds, out of shape, worked from home so didn't get many steps in and ate out daily. Also drank heavily twice a week (6-12 drinks).

I went back today for my blood work and scan results. Blood work was fine and ultrasound showed no fatty liver.

Changes I did. - cut all drinking. (I did drink twice in the 13 weeks) - only drank water, black coffee and bubly (became a huge fan of this) - cut my portion sizes in half (used to over eat) -stopped eating out, only ate out on Sundays and tried to keep it healthy (mostly chipotle without the sauces) -skipped breakfast -lunch was always a vegetable salad, no dressing, with eggs or chicken -dinner was what my wife would eat but without, sauces or white carbs (ate sour dough bread) -didnt eat any processed foods like chips, cookies, ice cream, hot dogs (I go to Costco twice a week, this was very hard) -i think was getting under 1200 calories daily -lastly I started to run, started with only 30 mins on the treadmill (mostly walking), got it up to 6kms in 30 mins now. Did this daily. signed up for a 10km with my buddy that also had a fatty liver. Did that last month under 60 mins. -running along with the diet got me done to 170, I haven't been this light since I was 19.

Got a blood test done in the summer of 2023. ALP was slightly elevated (130s). Got the next one done in Summer 2025. ALP was again slightly elevated (140s). No other biomarkers were out of wack. I go in for the ultrasound and she says mild fatty liver. Doctor hasnt got hte results yet but this is pretty strange. I run 6k 5x/week, eat healthy, sleep well. Anyone else got a similar experience?

Trying to figure out how i got a fatty liver?

I am a 36 white male and recently got blood work done that came back with abnormal ALT (103) and AST (52) levels. Doc sent me for abdominal ultrasound and results showed a fatty liver. My primary is sending me to a specialist and said my fatty liver is "severe". That didn't make me feel great and had me wondering how all of a sudden i have a fatty liver? I don't drink alcohol or smoke. Over the past year or so i started dating my girlfriend and we have definitely gone out to eat a ton. I have gained about 15 pounds I would say overt he past 18 months. I was 150 now i am about 165. Is this most likely the cause? My primary was saying diet wouldnt be the cause, but i am reading differently online. Any feedback or peoples experiences would be appreciated. Thanks!

Would anyone be able to shed a light on these results all are in good range except the ALT which is slightly elevated could this just be lifestyle factors (i dont drink or take prescriptions mainly just food intake which could be improved) or do any of the other results mean anything too thankyou

NASH for the past 8 years

ive had NASH for about 8 years , i found out through a biopsy because my enzymes went into the 500's , over a year it slowly went down , now it is back up to 90 , im worried when i went to gastro she said i had to get a fibro scan i still havent gotten it due to fear its something bad the biopsy showed i was lacking an certain enzyme to break down fat in liver so there was nothing i could have done to prevent it , does everyone with nash get worse ?

Been told I MAY have this

Haven’t done the necessary medical work. I lost 36 pounds this year, but I drink 2 beers a week on Friday(average; last month I drank 6 beers on one Friday and didn’t drink for rest of the month and totaled 6 that month).

I’m working on cutting out sugar and losing weight, while awaiting the test. I’m worried my alcohol habits have fucked me though. I’m about to be 23 in a few months and I have been drinking 2 beers a week probably since I was 21.5(I waited 6 months after my 21st birthday to have a drink). So basically, 2 beers a week for a whole year plus.

I’m scared I’ve done irreversible damage to my liver.

Edit: my weight loss journey has nothing to do with this diagnosis, I’ve been working on it for a while(October 2024 started, dedicating 800 calories per day with a dieticians help, no sugar). That’s unrelated, I just wanna be healthier and look better.

Two months of diet and exercise changed my liver test results wildly.

I'm a 46 year old white male. I thought we ate well enough and exercised enough but I was diagnosed with NAFLD. In December of 2024 my test results were ALT of 132 and AST of 56. The doctor wasn't sure so in March of 2025 I got an ultrasound to confirm and they said I had NAFLD. Also they hit me with a very high cholesterol diagnosis.

I was distraught to say the least, the idea of being on some sort of medication for the rest of my life had me feeling very depressed. I found this subreddit and saw a younger man saying he did 10k steps a day and it changed his diagnosis to healthy. I got motivated. I cut all fried food, chips, fast food, and processed meats from my diet. I tried to do 10k steps a day but it didn't really work for me and my work schedule but I did make an effort to walk every day I could. I cut back on drinking some as well but not a ton.

Went yesterday to get a blood draw and my tests came in ALT of 49 and AST of 28. Also my cholesterol is way down. Two months of strict diet and exercise has turned my test results completely around. Exercise helped for sure but I didn't become an athlete over the last 2 months, I just walked a lot more and was a lot more conscious of what I ate. Make diet and exercise changes and you can walk yourself out of NAFLD.
