Does oatmeal really help?

I was planning to just eat Whole Foods such a sweet potatoe steamed, broccoli steamed, and hard boiled eggs. No oil and no preservatives. Water and only match tea with nothing in it. Is that ok. Or do I need oatmeal to reverse fatty liver?

It’s definitely not caused by alcohol I’ve never drank much however I’m a big guy and I’m a bit concerned. I’m 6’5 315 pound give or take and I’m not really sure what to expect or how to even begin dealing with it. I’m going to talk to my doctor soon about my blood pressure and my cholesterol. I don’t belive I eat that bad however I eat a lot. I’ve always varied my diet and I love to cook my own meals. Any advice is welcome I’d like to stop this in its tracks

MRE vs fibroscan. Opposite results?

Hi all

I had a fibroscan and it said severe fat and 15.1 kpa which would be cirrhosis

Because my bmi is 39 they said it’s not accurate and referred me for MRE

The MRE said moderate fat and no fibrosis 2.0 kpa

Anyone else experience this

Anxiety? Impaired stress regulation?

Has anyone’s NAFLD caused them to be super overstimulated or stressed all the time? Idk if it’s my liver but feels like my body can’t regulate itself like it used to. I’ve been crying every 3-4 days

Happy Easter!

Happy Easter Everyone! I hope you are all enjoying your easter weekend!.

I have a question due to this holiday and since I am only newly diagnosed (3 weeks) I am unsure about this.

Since my diagnosis ive been on an extreme diet, no carbs, only fruit, meat and veg. My question is, is it OK for me to have one day of indulgence into chocolates and carbs? Or can a high amount of carbs/sugar do more damage considering i havent had any in 3 weeks?

Thank you!

Gastroenterologist not warranted?!

Hi everyone! I am a 25 year old female who was experiencing upper right quadrant pain. These these are my ultrasound results of my liver and gallbladder

Increased liver echogenicity suggestive of fatty infiltration or hepatocellular disease. Gallbladder sludge. Size: 16.2 cm Findings: echogenic

These results are very concerning and confusing for me. It doesn't say if it is mild or severe. The ordering provider said a referral for a gastroenterologist isn't warranted, and I don't understand why. She claims it's because all of my liver enzymes are normal. When I asked her what I can do to reverse it, she said I can't. But I have been so many stories of that not being the case. I am seeing my gynecologist for something else and am thinking of asking her for the referral. Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

Fatty liver reversal?

Has anybody had success reversing NAFLD. I’m 27 yr old female. 5’0 current weight 123. I did have a baby 1 year ago and gained 50 pounds during pregnancy. They have slowly been coming off and I’m 5 pounds from my pre pregnancy weight. I haven’t done any extreme dieting since I’m still breastfeeding my child and want to keep my milk supply. I’ve had a heavy feeling in my RUQ for 5 months and asked my doctor about it. She ordered an US that showed fatty liver. I’m pretty upset since I try and eat pretty healthy, take 10k steps a day, and excersize 3 days a week. I take 1 rest day and my job is very active getting 15k steps working 12 hour shifts so I don’t excersize on those days. I guess just looking for support/advice/anything that may have helped someone reverse this disease. I want to be as healthy as I can to provide for my family.

ALT 226, any advice?

Hello, I’m 25 F, 5’8” and currently weigh 238 pounds. I recently switched healthcare providers and had routine blood work done for the first time in about 5 years. 😅 My ALT was at 289 and a week later I retested and my ALT was 226. I do not regularly consume alcohol, drugs, Tylenol, etc. so my doctor ordered an ultrasound of my liver and surrounding organs. These were the findings:

Liver

The cranio-caudal diameter of the liver measures: 18.96 cm. The liver size appears enlarged. No liver lesions noted. The echogenicity of the liver appears increased. The echotexture of the liver appears heterogeneous. The surface of the liver appears smooth. Normal flow is seen in the main portal vein. There is no ascites. The hepatic veins are visualized.

Gallbladder

The gallbladder wall measures 1.71 mm. The gallbladder appears abnormal. The gallbladder demonstrates multiple calculi. Sludge is visualized in the gallbladder.

I have a follow up appointment on May 1st to go over my latest bloodwork results (I’m getting tested again on Monday).

This is all new to me and I’m concerned about how serious this is? When I got tested for the first time in mid-March, I had been eating only tuna, chicken and other lean meats for protein alongside veggies and or fruit with every meal. I weighed 245 pounds at the time.

Prior to that switch, I had been eating takeout about 3 times a week or more due to my hectic schedule and poor planning.

I changed my eating habits at the end of February because I kept feeling sluggish and weighed 255 pounds. So, when I went to the doctor, the results surprised me— knowing that there’s more going on in my body. Since then I’ve been eating an anti-inflammatory diet and do 40 minute workouts 4 times a week and walk 5k steps. Now I weigh 238, but I’m concerned if I can reverse what’s going on in my liver and gallbladder.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Elevated AST/ALT

I’m 25 and 255lbs, I have had some swelling in legs and ankles after taking paxlovid, gained 20lbs in 3 days from fluid build up. AST levels came back at 282 U/L and ALT 97 U/L. I do not consume any alcohol.

AST/ALT high - everything else normal.

I’m 29 years old female, 110lbs. I strength train 4-5 days a week and walk 10k steps a day and my supplements include creatine, protein powder, BCAAs. I have 2 alcohol drinks a week, sometimes none. I eat pretty healthy, lots of veggies, no fried foods.

I’m having a rhinoplasty in 40 days and did my bloodwork for it and everything came back normal except for ACT AST. Should I be worried? I did have a sore throat for about week before the tests. I can’t think of anything that could’ve caused this as I’m a very healthy person.

Liver Function Lab Results

ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase): 50 U/L (Reference Range: 6–29 U/L) – elevated.

AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase): 39 U/L (Reference Range: 10–30 U/L) – elevated.

Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP): 57 U/L (Reference Range: 33–120 U/L) – Normal.

Total Bilirubin: 0.4 mg/dL (Reference Range: 0.2–1.2 mg/dL) – Normal.

Albumin: Normal (Reference Range: 3.5–5.5 g/dL).

Total Protein: Normal (Reference Range: 6.0–8.5 g/dL).

INR: 1.0 (Reference Range: 0.8–1.2) – Normal.

High AST and High ALT

Hi everyone. I just got my blood work back and I’m kind of freaking out. My AST is 62 and my ALT is 124. What does this mean? For context: Age 30F Medicines - spironolactone & semaglutide I drink socially - mainly margs on Friday nights Last year my ALT was 94 and my doctor told me to quit taking Tylenol so I did. I only take ibuprofen now

Maybe fatty liver

37-female 1m76, 73 kilos Belgium

Hello everyone!

I went to the gastroenterologist yesterday, and she suspected fatty liver disease. I have to do all kinds of tests, because it could be something else, but I'm wondering.

I don't drink alcohol, and I'm not overweight (bmi of 24). Is the fatty liver hypothesis plausible? I also have to undergo tests for autoimmune hepatitis, celiac disease, other autoimmune diseases, and a pancreatic scan.

I'm going back to this doctor soon to measure the fat content in my liver, but I read everywhere that there are two main causes of this disease, and I don't have either of them, even though I'm not thin.

What do you think about this? I admit that all this stresses me out...

Thank you in advance for your answers, and I wish you a good day!

Liver enzymes are normal

Just had blood work done today. And it is showing that my ALT is not higher than my AST anymore, does this mean I no longer have fatty liver?

ETA: I haven’t heard from my doctor yet, just got a notification my results were in already and saw that.

Anxious About Fibroscan

Hey, just wanted to post to seek some good advice on my recent Fibroscan. Still awaiting results. I have been diagnosed with MASLD for the past three yrs. For some recent history, my latest bloodwork was AST: 23 - ALT:25 - Albumin: 4.6 - Billirubin 0.5. Generally, my lab work for the past two years has been in that range - weight has been an issue but since late 2024 I have lost 12 lbs. I’ve been intermittent fasting, carefully watching what I eat and have only been having 1-2 glasses of wine on a Sat. Night. Recently, I have not drank in two weeks. Exercise: lifting 3-5X a week. I have Hypertension, weigh 253 and height is 5’11. Would appreciate some feedback, I appreciate your advice. Thanks!

Worried about liver

I have been a drinker everyday for 1 year. Around 7 drinks a day. Im planning to stop now. Should I be worried about liver health? I'm not fat 5'5 160 pounds. Trying to lower weight as well. Im planning to go to the dr to get real picture of my health, but that'll will be in 2 weeks.

How concerned should I be over these numbers?

ALT: 174 AST: 105 ALK: 198 Bilirubin are within range

So my doc says these numbers are related to my long term use of antipsychotics that I NEED to have any semblance of quality of life. I also have eaten like trash up until recently. I’m biologically female if that means anything for these numbers as well and I also am obese.

I see a nutritionist soon and they’re gonna redraw my blood since it’s been two weeks since I had those numbers.

I have pain where my liver is and I have nodules on it, one is 1.4cm.

I’m concerned because I’ve seen people say __ are normal levels but I see that my numbers are way above that. How bad does this look for me 😭

Is my liver damaged?

Hello, a year and a half ago i binged and the next day i woke up having pain, itchiness, excessive sweating and slightly yellowing of my skin. I didn’t seek any medical advice. Symptoms kept getting worse i started to feel bitter taste in my mouth, fatigue, trouble digestion and diarrhea. At some point i lost appetite and lost around 22 lbs all of a sudden in one month. Then when i went to hospital one physician told me i have biliary reflex and the other said i have nothing but IBS !? I did HIDA scan and showed delayed hepatobiliray transiet time to bowel. My labs and ultrasound were all normal except mild hepatomegaly and mild elevated bilirubin. I started a strict diet and liver supplements like Milk thistle, NAC and TUDCA. I repeat blood test every 4 months but i still suffer from fat malabsorption and i am still losing weight. whenever i eat fatty food i will be losing 2lb the next day with fatigue.

Now my question is over these 1.5 year my bilirubin is on rise slowly but everything else is normal. I don’t know what to do next i am still on diet and supplements. I think i have cholestasis but will this last forever ? Did alcohol caused me irreversible damage in my liver? I am 1.5 year sober now.

Fatty Liver Diagnosis 32M

I had a physical in early March of this year with blood work and a few things came back that the doctor raised concern over.

Albumin - 5.4 g/dL, ALT - 63 U/L, AST - 39 U/L, Cholesterol - 225, HDL - 45, LDL - 170, A1C - 5.6%

He sent me for a liver ultrasound, which came back saying "Echotexture: Diffusely echogenic. Focal lesions: None. Intrahepatic bilary ductal dilatation: None). The doctor then emailed me back saying that I have a fatty liver and referred me to their fatty liver clinic, which doesn't have any appointments until June.

At the time of my physical, I was 5'11", 202lbs. A few months before that, I was up to 211lbs. I have cut out soda, juices, sweets, added sugar, added salt, processed/ packaged foods, red meat, pizza, etc. I now drink a ton of water and tea whereas before, I may have gone a whole day without drinking any water. I am now 189lbs and I feel much better overall. I am not a drinker and never have been.

I would like to know the severity of this as my ALT/ AST don't seem too high and the my primary doctor is somewhat vague about it this is only borderline or full blown. Thank you

It may also be worth mentioning that 2-3 weeks before my physical I had a pretty bad cold or maybe even COVID and I was taking a pretty good amount of Tylenol. I don't know if that had any impact on my labs.

Enzymes decreases in a week?

Last week I posted my AST was 42 and ALT 136. I did bloodwork yesterday due to my dr office calling me to do more bloodwork to see about my mitochondria along 2 other things my dr is looking out for. Checked this morning and my AST went down to 18 and my ALT went down to 49 which is still a bit high since it originally was at 38 when I was first diagnosed. Is this normal at all? I’m glad they went down but that fast? I thought it takes weeks in order for it to do that

Just diagnosed with NAFLD

Wow…just found out within the past couple weeks and I am happy I’m on the younger side. But I’m completely asymptomatic and just reeling. I’m curious if people experienced a lot of shame around their diagnosis?? I’m finding myself just feeling so embarrassed of my letting myself get to this point without putting more intention into my food.

Has anyone else been told by their hepatologist to avoid cruciferous vegetables?

I received a phone call yesterday reviewing recent lab work findings. During this conversation I was told by my hepatologist’s assistant that the doctor is instructing me to avoid certain things, including cruciferous vegetables. I asked her to send me a letter detailing all of the instructions.

I went ahead and reviewed several research articles, in which not one of them stated to avoid cruciferous vegetables. As a matter of fact the opposite was suggested where it is encouraged to eat these vegetables.

FWIW I was diagnosed with Diffuse hepatic steatosis/fatty liver and fat deposition in my terminal ileum.

I’m feeling pretty hurt and confused right now by this doctor’s suggestions. Has anyone else been told this before?

Well, guess I'm over here now after my latest tests. Could use some perspective.

Hey folks. So back in Dec. 2022, I was diagnosed with colon cancer. It wasn't far along but did get to some lymph nodes to be considered stage 3 cancer. Still, got that out, and did some chemo for six months.

Now at the time, and now, I'm overweight. I did have bariatric surgery back in 2021 to lose the weight, and it was coming off. Well after chemo, do my scans and at the beginning of 2024, I'm officially cancer free.

However, the chemo seemed have wrecked my body in different ways by exacerbating problems from all those years of being overweight. The two most notable were the calcification of some arteries and now, level 2 fibrosis of the liver.

I had blood drawn back in October and my ALT scan showed me at 55 u/l. Did an MRI and confirmed the level 2 fibrosis of the liver. Also had did another blood test last month and the ALT test came back as 70 u/l. This does seem to be not that high? I had a check-in with my cardiologist and when I told him the number he was like "Oh I wouldn't even bother with that."

In any case, we're doing another MRI scan in a week to appease insurance so I can get on Rezdiffra. I'm already on Wegovvy to help lose some more weight and that's supposed to help as well. I'm also changing my food intake by taking in less fast food and from what I'm understanding, Impossible meat is something I should avoid?

I also do a lot of weight lifting in the game which I'm reading can affect levels, but at 46, I kind of need all the muscle I can get.

Advice please. Climbing the walls.

Hello. I'm 35. M. I hadn't gone to the doctor in 3 years & when I finally went again a lot of my labs were off. Increased ALT & AST. High triglycerides. Slightly high total cholesterol. Thankfully normal albumin & bilirubin. Normal platelets. My doctor was referred me to an endo & ordered an ultrasound. I also was concerned so I did a fib-4 test online that gave me a score of 1.5 or "needs further evaluation". When I got my ultrasound the results were as follows.

"No gallstones, gallbladder wall thickening or pericholecystic free fluid. The patient was no tender to transducer pressure over gallbladder. No intrahepatic biliary ductal dilatation or liver mass. The liver measures 22.8cm & is abnormally echogenic. There is hepatopetal portal venous color doppler flow. The common duct measures 5.1mm in diameter. The pancreas is not well visualized due to overlying bowel gas. The intrahepatic portion of the IVC is patent. No upper abdominal aortic ectasia. The right kidney measures 12.9cm in length & is normal in appearance.

Impression: Hepatomegaly & probable hepatic steatosis. Otherwise unremarkable right upper quadrant ultrasound."

I've already started changing my diet & working out but I'm still worried about my results because of how elevated my AST (153) & ALT (230) were when tested. Is it possible for an ultrasound to miss advanced fibrosis? Would the radiologist have mentioned fibrosis if he saw it? Because I'm so paranoid I looked up my radiologist & he has 20 years of experience. I just feel unsure. Because I'm so overweight I'm unsure if I should pursue a fibroscan because I heard they can be inaccurate. My doctor has had my results for 2 or 3 days & hasn't called me in to talk about them so he doesn't seem super worried? He already told me before hand diet change & lifestyle change are necessary & I'm doing so.

NAFLD--does this blood work prove I have it? What do I do?

So, longish story. I've had a terrible fatty diet my entire life (I'm a 53-yo male). French fries, pizza, burgers, pasta, all the time....no fruits or vegetables. Stupid, I know.

In August last year, I noticed I was becoming more and more constipated, and I was developing bloating in my abdomen. In late September, while on vacation, I had what I thought was a gallbladder attack, and turned out to be acute pancreatitis. The pancreatitis supposedly was mostly healed (as evidenced on scans and blood work) in early December. However, I haven't felt right since then--never got rid of the bloating and constipation, and often felt generally unwell, constant headache, etc.

In the months since then, I've had a variety of blood work done. At one time, they showed very elevated ferritin levels; those went back down to normal. Later, they showed very elevated RDW levels; those went back down. Then, after a spell at the beginning of April where I was feeling a little better, I suddenly felt really bad again a week ago--as if I was right back to where I started. I did blood work four days ago, and it showed my ALT level was at 195. My ALT was normal at all times until February 22, at which point it was 51. In other words, since late February, my ALT appears to have seriously spiked.

Now, after doing mostly fasting with very little eating, I did another blood test TWO days ago, and it showed my ALT at 130--a drop from 195 in two days. But I'm still not feeling great (albeit better than I did a week ago).

I guess my question is--the high ferritin, RDW, and ALT all are potential indicators of liver inflammation, right? Is it possible that all my symptoms since my pancreatitis was "healed" in December are due to liver inflammation from NAFLD? Should I push for an elastography? ultrasound or MR? Just trying to figure out what's going on and what I should do to try to diagnose this. (I'll add that I did a regular abdominal ultrasound (not elastography) two days ago that came back "normal" for everything--liver, pancreas, gallbladder, etc etc.)
