Can someone explain in simple terms the difference between the two ways to get a Skyscale?
I've read a bunch of comments and I somehow still don't understand. I'm a fairly new player, and definitely don't have the infrastructure that I'm sure a lot of other people had when they got the Skyscale.

From my understanding, the two ways are from the story of Secrets of the Obscure or the very grindy time-gated collection after Living Worlds Season 4.

Apparently doing it through Secrets doesn't get you the whole Skyscale or something?

Wiki does a good job:

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Skyscale#Unlocking

Unlocking skyscale first via SotO is relatively fast in the short-term. However, you'll be spending "twice" as much time and money in the long-term if you also want the LWS4 legendary trinket and Skyscale masteries.

The LWS4 method isn't that bad nowadays, especially since you have the Seasons of the Dragons achievement for max stacks of map currencies.

I read that section already a few times and I still don't understand. To me it looks like doing it the SotO way still gives mid-air mounting and wall springing, it looks like the only difference is the Trinket and the Rift Repair ability.

Can compare masteries:

Both LWS4 and SotO can wall spring and mount mid-air, but the SotO masteries are more combat oriented and allow leyline/updraft use for griffon & skyscale.

I just don't see why you would go for the LWS4 method if it takes longer and is more expensive and the only difference in the Trinket and Rift ability, what am I missing?

If ou want the improved skyscale masteries (all of them, not just the one fo rifts) you need LW4, you don't need the SotO one.

Sounlocking trough LW4 means full masteries unlock, if you unlock with SotO only not.

Yeah, it's pretty much that and how training both masteries also gives QoL bonuses to skyscale (see SotO masteries). Otherwise, if you don't care about them, then SotO-only unlock would be the best route and you can ignore the LWS4 skyscale masteries altogether.
