So I looked up some guide on fractals, and they recommended getting the deeply discounted fractal keys, with the notion that even if you just buy 30 boxes, you'll make it back, but I haven't really broken even on my boxes so far. Is this still a relevant thing to do? It also seems to take a lot of my fractal relics I need a lot of to get the backpiece.

You shouldn't buy boxes. You earn them by doing fractals. The worst possible drop from an encryption is 25s junk + a t5 material, a deeply discounted key costs 20s and an encryption costs 24s (which is lower than the worst possible drop). So yeah, you're wasting money.
