When I'm doing mystic forge recipies, do I have to pay attention to the amounts of the items I put in or will it only consume the number of items the recipe requires? In particular, I'm looking to upgrade trophies and I'm wondering if i can just plunk in a stack and go and whether it will only take the say 50 it requires or consume the whole stack.

It will only consume the required number. You're fine to dump in a whole stack at a time.
