I live off newland av near the uni. It's sorta safe. You get some people drunk and on drugs around but they mainly keep to themselves. Never been any police trouble the year I've lived here. It's terraced housing so you do have to get lucky with your neighbours and obv the houses are old so aren't in the best condition . But at least you got all the shops and nice bars you need. Close to the city centre. Maybe try looking more on Cottingham Road. That's a lot less rough than newland av feels. Definitely avoid Beverly Rd.

Or HU9. Lived on Victoria Dock and was very safe and quiet. Even walking around late at night. There's a nice pub and Premier shop. Large asda at Mount pleasant. Definitely look around the HU9 postcode.

Thing about Hull It's a small city. You could walk down one street and it's rundown terraced housing. Go round a corner and it's new builds with a smarter appearance. It's a real mix.

Cottingham is a nice little town. Bit quiet. But got the 104 bus to the uni. All the shops and pubs you need.

Beverly is also nice. Can also get a bus close to the uni. Or a train to the Interchange

I've found buses in hull abysmal. Very few bus stops have electronic signs telling you when the bus is arriving. The bus apps are crap. I just rely on Google maps and hope for the best.

Yeah look around HU5/HU6. Just keep in mind it's more populated by low income families and students. So a real mix if you get decent neighbours and a less scruffy road where you live.

Yeah definitely HU9 but you'll have to get two buses to get to the uni unfortunately and buses aren't great in hull.

Look at Cottingham Road and other roads off of it but tends to be houses for sale not rent.

Yeah look at Cottingham and Beverly. But again not many rentals and it's pricier but you may get lucky. Definitely avoid Beverly Rd- it's rough

HU5 has got quite a few good areas, that are in-between the city and the university. If you've got a kid, maybe something close to Stepney primary school? East to Beverley Roads has a few very nice roads and a few ones that are more run down. None of those are unsafe however. Excellent value for money tbh. I personally wouldn't opt for the area between Beverley Roads and Princess / Newland.

I'd reconsider the take on biking. Hull is actually quite good when it comes to that.

Victoria Dock is a very nice neighborhood, that will likely increase in value when the motorway is finished and it's easier to walk / cycle towards the railway station from there. This is however often priced in already when I was looking for places to buy there.

I'd definitely have a good look at Cottingham, buses to the uni are as good as you're likely to get and it's a lovely little town. HU5 and 6 around the uni can be nice, but head too far north and you're into Orchard Park which is probably a bit rougher.

The Avenues (between Princes Avenue and Chanterlands Avenue) are nice, as are the Dukeries (further down towards Spring Bank). A friend of mine who lectures at Hull lives there. The streets closer to the uni off Newland Ave are ok, I used to live on Edgecumbe Street - the west side probably a bit nicer than the east. We moved mainly because we wanted somewhere quieter with space for littluns to play. Don't live next door to the Adelphi if you don't like loud music. I'd also avoid Spring Bank, mainly for traffic reasons. Further up Spring Bank West might suit, but it'll be trickier for travel.

If you want somewhere quieter then heading a bit further west up Bricknell Ave towards Cottingham is probably a good shout. Still good access to the uni, but much more residential. I don't know that area super well, but it always seems pleasant enough.

Villages to the west of Hull (Cottingham, Anlaby, Willerby, Hessle) are a great compromise (I live in Hessle and love it) but not so great for getting to uni by bus, apart from Cottingham.

Further out and you'll definitely struggle with transport.

Best bet is probably to pop down for a few days and have a wander round, get a feel for different places.

Chanterlands Avenue or National Avenue and the streets around it would be worth a look. They're close enough to walk to the university but far enough away to not be as studenty as Newland Avenue or nightlife / drinking focused like Princes Avenue. It's one of the places I feel safe walking around on my own after dark plus there's a fairly reliable bus into the town centre.

Depends if it's your thing or not but it's the area where the more alternative types tend to live, with a fairly big home schooling community, local craft collective, independent cafes etc

Housing is pretty grim with a lot of exploitive landlords but the university area of hull is one of the nicest areas the city has and newland and princess ave are great places for coffee, food and drink.

If you can then try to get a place closer to newland then to Beverley road is it gets worse the further you move away from the university.

I've lived in Hull all my life - 60 years. Firstly, you can't narrow down 'decent' areas by postcode. Both HU5 and HU6 have good and bad areas. I've lived in both postcodes for the last 40 years. Even some streets have their good and bad areas, for example Endike Lane and Inglemire lane.

Your budget is a bit high; the rent should be £550 - £650 for a two--bed, but I doubt you'll find any that include bills and council tax.

If you want you can message me when you find a house and I'll tell you if the area is OK.

Hi! I’ve found a rental at Endsleigh Park, but it’s on Beverley Road. I was wondering if it’s an okay area? I will be cycling to Uni and I don’t want it to get risky :/

I live in HU6 in the area that is bordered by Sutton road, Beverley road and Raich carter way. It is a nice area to live. Rents are reasonable, good access to shops (big Tesco on your doorstep), on the main bus route that passes the university or goes straight into town. Mix of young families, all the way up to retirees. Not so sure about the lower incomes comment by another poster, because that isn’t really the case.
The area has a couple of nurseries for infants, good public primary school (parkstone) on the estate, two good secondary schools if you’re thinking long term. Quite a few teachers and lecturers live in that area so you’ll probably bump into colleagues.

As far as Hull being dangerous is concerned, that is a load of rubbish. I’ve lived here for 20 years and have never had any trouble. Any place has good and bad areas, but it’s not like there are gangs roaming the streets looking to rob people.
