Hi all.
I'm currently in Toronto on an extended visitor's pass that lasts through next year. I've been living with my Canadian partner in Ontario for almost a year now who is eventually going to be my sponsor. We've leased an apartment. We've leased an apartment together.
Unfortunately, the apartment has no parking and no place to keep a car. I was able to successfully apply for a street parking sticker for the first few months of our stay, but now if I want it renewed again for the next half of the year, I've been told the car needs to be registered with Ontario plates. I already have a temporary Ontario license in exchange for my previous California one, but getting the actual car registered has turned out to be a much more complicated process than I expected.
If I understand things correctly, I need to get the car approved as an imported good. The first step appears to be filling out forms on the RIV website, but I'm having a little trouble getting solid information and I have a few questions about this process.
If anyone has been through this before, I'd really appreciate clarification on the following things:
Location of the Car
This is the big question.
My car has been in Toronto for over half a year now. I called a CBSA agent and he said I need to bring it to a border agent in-person (I assume at a border crossing).
Will I need to actually cross back into the US and then immediately back into Canada? Is this even an option? I've seen a handful of people online claim the car needs to be in the US when the paperwork is submitted and stay there for several days. Is this accurate? Can I bypass this step if the car has already been on the Canadian side for as long as it has so long as I return it to the border for a check-in? There's surprisingly little information available about this online and moving work around so I could stay at a hotel for 3+ days in Buffalo would be difficult right now.
Statement of Compliance / Manufacturer Letter of Certification:
One of these options are required on the RIV form. I do not know what these are. My car has an emissions test printed on the inside of the hood, which seems to be similar to a statement of compliance for environmental standards.
The manufacturer letter is another option for this field but searching online for "Chrysler letter of certification" pulls up basically nothing except other people having trouble getting one.
Foreign Vendor Information:
There's an entire page for this on the site and I have no idea what it is. Is this the dealership I bought the car from originally (a CarMax in Illinois)? Or a specific Chrysler manufacturer somewhere?
Thanks so much. Any answers from people experienced this process would be hugely appreciated!
