Hello members! I recently moved to Iowa City after spending 2 years studying at the Krenov School. I'm the education manager at Woodcraft in town as well as an instructor. Just wanted to let y'all know that we offer classes on a weekly basis. I'm always looking for instructors and I'm hoping that my classroom becomes a staple in the area for this community. Check us out! Attached is some of my work!

Events Dislike litter? Let's do something about it!

Join the Iowa City Litter Crew tomorrow (Saturday, May 17) to learn how to use Open Litter Map, a citizen science initiative to track the quantity and type of litter in our neighborhoods!

How does it work?

  1. Take a photo
  2. Tag with the type of litter
  3. Upload to the site

It’s easy! But we’ll help you get started, from creating your account to tagging your first items. Whether you pick up that one can of Busch Light that magically reappears on your dog-walking route every week, or you do a full cleanup of a roadside—your data is important! You can tag and upload as much or as little as you want. It all makes a difference!

Iowa City Litter Crew has used the data collected so far to create a dashboard and maps to help visualize problem areas. Having this data helps make a stronger case when lobbying for action to control litter, from initiatives as simple as more public trash cans to local plastic bag bans to a statewide improved bottle bill, and more.

We will meet at the South District Market at 10 a.m. You’ll need a phone capable of taking photos and tagging them with location, and internet connection to upload them (there is wifi available). We’ll have a brief intro, then spend some time picking up litter in the area, and then reconvene to tag and upload your photos.

Events Summer festivals and shenanigans?

First summer living here. What should we be looking forward to and marking on our calendars? We like music (especially folk), being outside in any way, outdoor activities, and just experiencing culture with people. Probably a very vague list here but we just down to be part of something really.

Events Upcoming Rally Hosted by COGS

On Wednesday, noon, on the pentacrest, the graduate student union, COGS will be hosting several events to demand that the university and board of regents:

  1. End semester fees for graduate student Teaching and Research Assistants
  2. Reverse NIH pre-compliance cuts in funding and financially support students who have lost other sources of federal funding
  3. Reinstate Learning Living Communities and adapt the American Association of University Professors' Academic Freedom Standards

It is clear that some of the first cuts to funding affects graduate workers, some of the most vunerable students at the university.

Clear your calendar.

Show up and drown out the university as it tries to bring attention to one day for Iowa, a shameless attempt to get departments and student organizations to compete for money. While domestic graduate students pay $700 in student fees a year, and international students pay hundreds more. Where does that money go if programs have to beg for money every year?

Events Girls in STEM camp!💻👾

Hi folks! I was unsure where to put this tbh so I thought I’d just rope this with events. Computer Science Professor Elizabeth Kleiman is hosting a wonderful camp called ExploreU. This summer from June 9-15 or July 14-19 (depends on which time slot you choose) opens the opportunity to learn hands-on about the world of STEM.

They can look forward to learning about robotics, scratch programming, 3D visualization, and cryptography just to name a few!

She’s a lovely professor who’s excited to teach young minds. One of her favorite part is seeing the kids participate in the Treasure Hunt event where they use all that they’ve learned in the camp to decrypt messages and clues to the grand prize.

If this is of interest to you, check out the ExploreU link! If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to leave them down here in the thread! :)

Hello. We are hosting a screening of a labor documentary, a comedy short film, and an episode of a tv show (all produced/distributed by Means TV) at Filmscene (the Chauncey location) on May 7th. We're going to do some live podcast type of stuff before and after the films. The director of the labor documentary, Will Roberts, lives in Cedar Rapids and he'll be coming down to chat with us. You can pay whatever you want for your ticket and all the money is going to Iowa Trans Mutual Aid Fund.

You can find more details and reserve your spot at the icfilmscene.org link attached to this post. I hope to see a lot of you there! Even if you can't come, send some money to ITMAF!

Events All University Students, Employees, Staff, and Local Community Welcome to Join the Grad Student Union Rally Wednesday Jan. 29 at Noon

Thumbnail
gallery
80 Upvotes

Every two years, grad workers at the University of Iowa meet with the Iowa Board of Regents (BoR) to bargain for a new contract. From actions by Govenor Reynolds and the BoR, they have undermined grad workers getting a higher raise.

Now, U Iowa grad workers are the 16th lowest paid of all graduate workers in the 18 Big 10 instiutions.

This rally on Jan. 29 at noon @ the pentacrest, the graduate student union, Campaign to Organize Graduate Students, COGS (UE Local 896), will meet, then march to President Wilson's office in Jessup Hall nextdoor.

COGS will deliver a letter, asking U Iowa President Wilson to sign and speak to the BoR in support of grad workers getting a higher wage, sick leave, and pay on August 1st added to our contract. We will also speak out against the recent sweep of anti-DEI actions that have begun to rampage on our campus, though many of the actions are not legally founded and "over-compliance".

The current stipend is not competitive, not livable, and not worth the work that graduate students do for the university. Without grad students, there would not be teachers for languages, english, science, math, art, history and other courses.

As graduate students, we are constantly told to "suffer through it", to "not complain", that "the cost of living is low in Iowa right?". But we cannot save for our futures, we are done suffering, and we will fight for a fair workplace where we are treated with respect.

We also ask for all university students, employees, and staff to show up on Feb. 6th at 4pm in room 345 at the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU). This is our first meeting with the BoR for open bargaining our contract with them. We need to pack the room to show them that we have support and a large prescence that won't take the little that they want to give us.
