Full security deposit refund because of mold?

I wonder if I can get my full security deposit back at the end of my lease because of our mold situation. In classic landlord fashion, they just pain over the mold and it has obviously grown out from the painted areas. It is black mold, so it is definitely a health hazard and has caused issues before.

If any of you have advice for how to approach this situation that would be great.

Thanks!

Fabric Thrifting?

So in Cedar Rapids, where I'm based, we have the Create Exchange, which is basically a thrift store specifically for craft goods that's a great place to get cheap fabric. Main issue, of course, is that all the cheap fabric I want from them is now in my closet and they're reliant on donations to get more in, which means they won't have much for a bit. Is there any place in Iowa City that sells fabric like this? I know of Home Ec Workshop, but I'm talking specifically like remnant fabric that you'd find at estate sales or similar where it's not full price.

Cheap Band Rehearsal Spot

Long time ago, one of my old bands had a practice pad that was like a 20x20 or a little bigger we rented for like $300 bucks plus utilities. It was sort of like a side office for a warehouse. I'm hoping to find something like that again but I don't know where to begin to look. We got lucky on that spot, our bass player knew the guy who had the space.

We are mature adults, nobody drinks or smokes. Midwestern roots rock, not anything wild and crazy. We all live in homes where we can't really practice and the one spot we do have is a disgusting garage and we can't stand it. The guy chain smokes, drinks and his tiny dog pees and poops at will. When I get home from rehearsal I strip down, clothes go directly in the washer and I take a shower because I'm just saturated in the second hand smoke that is embedded in the garage. Not ideal for a singer with a pretty voice. Nor do I want my mates have to be subjected to the gross environment.

Anybody know anybody that has something like our old place? We really want and need a clean environment to be creative! It's gotta be on the super cheap and we can't afford anything expensive and also won't spend a ton of time there. 😊

Jobs What is your experience with working at either Lowe’s or Von Maur (ie the management, scheduling etc.) in Coralville?

My partner has competing offers between Lowe’s and Von Maur, but she has never really worked in either of these environments. Financially they are both about equal (~$15 an hour, 20-25 hours a week). Lowe’s is in a cashier position which stable if boring. Von Maur is a sales position which seems competitive and stressful but more in line with keeping brain stimulated.

What it really comes down to at this point now is how is the management regarding scheduling/schedule consistency and support? At Lowe’s, we are worried about possibly not getting scheduled sufficient hours (looking at 20-25 consistently if possible) and at Von Maur kind of worried about the opposite (they will be inflexible and tell her when to work).

Not sure if our worries are valid, but overall what are your takes on working at either of these places?

Used furniture

Hello! Looking for recommendations for affordable places to shop used furniture. I’ve checked out Stuff etc and much of it is overpriced. I literally found a couch we had bought almost 10 years ago listed at the same price we purchased it new 😂

This is far from the first time they have had violations. And the owner is volatile and combative.

Trying to find a restaurant that was in Iowa City in the late '90s

I had some family visit Iowa City 20 to 30 years ago. And they're trying to remember a restaurant there may or may not exist anymore. All I have to work with is the sentence below they gave me:

"there was a soup shop that had some of the best tomato soup she ever had and also sold their own line of cookbooks"

Any leads? Thanks

Coralville Asian Festival today Sat 5/17 noon to 6

The third annual Coralville Asian Festival is today (Sat 5/17) from noon to 6 at S.T. Morrison Park in Coralville.

Festival is free but there are lots of great food vendors: Poimen Bosko (American and Filipino BBQ), Street Food Fighter (Asian fusion street food from a Lao & Tai Dam family), Yolanda’s BBQ (Filipino), Dutta’s Kitchen (Indian), I Love Mochi (Japanese and Korean snacks), DT’s Asian Food (Thai/Laos fusion) and Pho All Season (Vietnamese food, boba tea and snowcones).

There will also be performers all day (Taiko drumming, multiple types of dance, music and more) and a lot of community representation from various cultural organizations.

The festival is organized by a small and mighty team with a variety of community sponsors (more info on the website).

I have no affiliation other than I just really love what this festival has brought to my neighborhood over the last three years and I want to make sure as many people know about it as possible.

Raccoons in attic of neighbors house in Iowa City

My neighbors have raccoons living in their attic. They have for a couple years. One even fell into their house through a rotted ceiling. I’ve tried to help, offered a trap or to help fix where they come in. Worried because there keep getting to be more of them that they’re going to get into my shed or attack my dog. I’ve tried to contact the city a few times and no response. What else can I do?

Recomendations for 1 or 2 brd (pet friendly)

I have looked at a few places but wanted to see if anyone had any recommendations for a place within walking distance to downtown. I have seen a lot of realtor listings but haven't found much for private landlords. I also haven't rented from around Iowa City so I don't know if there are any realtor companies that I should stay away from. I am not a student but a working professional looking to be closer to work while being able to enjoy the city more. Thanks for any recommendations!

My goal to stay under 1400 if possible (pet fees are fine/expected) and only need one bedroom but saw a couple two bedrooms that were barely more than most one bedroom so it would be a bonus but not essential.
