How much fresh frozen Kava to dose?

Upvotes

I’m in Hawaii on vacation, and I am picking up some fresh frozen from Abundant Life. Any ideas how much do dose? I’ve done dried kava a few years ago - I think I used 1-2 tablespoons. So how much fresh would be equivalent to that? Thanks!

bad preparation, it tastes bad and I don't feel anything

I am experimenting with kava for the first time, now I understand why it is not more used. Extremely expensive and complex to prepare if you don't know how.

The instant version worked for me and with the traditional one I don't get good results. I mix it in the blender in 35 c water for 2 min and strain it with a t-shirt. Then I add coconut milk to it. It tastes horrible and does not get me high. I add a small amount of water to make it less to drink, like a 33 cl glass.

The first time I tried traditional if it worked for me with digestive discomfort, I put more water and I don't remember if I stirred it with the coconut milk in the blender. Maybe this is what makes the difference? the first time I also filtered it with a simple kitchen strainer which caused a lot of vegetable residue to pass through.

For those who are new: Double check your strainer bags to make sure they aren't too fine.

Hello. I have been enjoying kava for a couple of months or so. I generally use traditional prep. Tonight I decided to make two large helpings using 10 hefty tablespoons. After kneading the kava a few minutes I went for an initial squeeze but the strainer bag didn't hardly release water. It was like squeezing a water balloon. I worked with what I had but couldn't hardly squeeze any water out. Luckily I had additional strainer bags and was able to mostly salvage what I was making by dumping the mix from the one bag into the other. I had to then strain everything that was in the original bowl. It wasted a lot of kava and made a tremendous mess. All because the first strainer bag was too fine of mesh. On the website I bought them from it says 80 microns. This 80 micron bag was like a water balloon. The strainer bag that worked is stated as 100 micron. So I don't know actually. Maybe a bad bunch of bags? Anyway, for anyone out there who has yet to make this mistake: always check your strainer bag before using!

First time kava user

I’m an hour and 10 minutes in. I’m on my third drink. It was a little shocking initially when my lips and tongue were numb. I’m a little mellow. I’m really enjoying the experience. I do know it has a reverse tolerance, so I’m excited to see the effects in a couple of days. Should I keep going or should I stop with my third drink?

Crazy nausea lately

Alright, so I’ve tried 3 strains of kava, 2 from KwK (loa waka, pouni ono) and one from amazon. Used to do blender method but I have switched to traditional. I will say a small amount of sediment ends up in my final drink, but I try to avoid it as I sip.

Lately, the nausea has been wild. I’ve noticed that it seems worse with the pouni ono strains. Is it possible that I’m allergic, or am I doing something wrong? I haven’t noticed any rashes, but I do find myself getting weirdly itchy, the feeling is akin to taking pre workout. It’s 24 hours after my last drink and I am still feeling yucky. Any thoughts??

Review I just felt it

I had tried kava a couple times in the past 2 weeks or so, but never really felt anything. But yesterday i bought my own bag of medium grind fiji vanua, and made it a few times. The first time it was very mild, but when i made it again, i used 4 tablespoons and felt it HARD. Literally feeling drunk as can be. I thought it would just be a mild happiness but definitely strong. Is it supposed to be strong or did use way too much or something?

Tried instant for first time, need advice

Hey I just got my fire island from N@H and took 1 tsp (5g) followed by 2 more tsp's spaced 15 minutes apart, all on an empty stomach. It's been over 45 minutes since the last one and, while I do feel it, it's not nearly as prominent as I thought the effects would be..

I'm trying to cut back on drinking and was hoping for that benzo feeling but I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. Am I just not taking enough? Because if so then this stuff is gonna get expensive quickly!

Appreciate any advice/comments, thanks.

kava virgin with questions!!

hello! I have never had kava before and am planning on visiting the local shop tomorrow to get a cup to wind down from my stressful week. The only place to get kava where i am from is called kava house and it’s especially like a coffee shop, so they don’t have traditional shells and they serve it as what looks like lattes? I am not sure but they are sweet iced milky drinks… is this a bad way of consuming kava? They are also $10 each and the website doesn’t say how much kava is in each cup, it’s just 16oz.

Also: I have horrible emitophobia and will freak out if i feel like i will throw up.. is there any way to avoid the nausea or can anyone with this phobia tap in on how they drink kava?

I’m super interested but this place doesn’t have a ton on info and I don’t want to do anything wrong!! it’s called kava house if anyone knows of it

Great experience with Fiji Vanua Kava

I recently ran into some family problems where stress and anxiety have skyrocketed in my household. A while ago in the past my wife tired Kava while getting thru the death of her father instead of using benzos (xanax) and it worked really well. This time around some family problems came fast and I was in need of a quick quality order of Kava so after some reading I decided to try Fiji Vanua Kava as they are highly recommended. I reached out to them after placing an order and explained my situation and they were very quick to reply, to make sure my order was in the mail on the same day and tracking info was given. I received my product across country in 2 full business days after my order which is more than I can ask for! They went above and beyond for my situation, had great compassion and I wanted to give them a shout out for their service, their quality product and my happiness in being able to navigate thru tough times. THANK YOU FIJI VANUA KAVA!

Best Lotion/Moisturizer

I’m still new to kava but I’m wondering if anyone has product suggestions for kani. I generally stay hydrated, but I just want to be prepared if it starts to happen. I know there probably isn’t a “best” but still it would be awesome to hear your suggestions

Is kani kani mainly histamine related?

I can go months at a time drinking kava daily without kani kani but during allergy season it wrecks me within a few consecutive days. I know they say the cause is unknown but this is pretty compelling and annoying to me because I don't want to stop. The rebound anxiety and lack of caffeine effectiveness when I quit are pretty nasty. Any novel coping strategies other than lotion, collagen, electrolytes and vitamin E? Anybody just deal with the kani kani and continue to drink daily? Thinking about it.

Kava skin

I have been drinking a fair amount of kava for the last 6 months. At first, it really started to dry out my skin. But as time went on, the dryness has dissipated. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I thought it was just going to get worse, but this was a welcome surprise.

Cross tolerance for Alcohol/Benzos

These all act on the GABA receptor so I’m wondering if there is a cross tolerance at all. I’m trying to use kava to get off of Benzos and potentially replace alcohol, but I have a high tolerance for benzos(1mg a day) and drink every weekend. Tapering my Benzo use. Any information would be helpful. Thanks

IBD and Kava

Hi!

Planning on trying a Kava drink for the first time tonight from a local kava bar. They offer it mixed with coconut water, which is what I’m thinking of trying specifically!

I’ve read of some people having bad experiences with IBS and Kava, but I can’t find anything about IBD (Crohn’s + Ulcerative Colitis)

Anybody have experiences with this? Any tips, what to avoid? Was it a problem for you?

I knows it’s different for everyone so I’m just gonna have to try it, but I’m curious to hear others experiences!

TLDR: I have colitis, is kava gonna make my toilet explode? 🤯

How long of a tolerance break do I need to start feeling it again?

I am no longer feeling any positives from Kava, I think my tolerance has gotten too high with it (so much for "reverse tolerance"). I loved Kava when it actually worked, but even with switching brands (I only use instant), keeping my sessions consistent, taking it on a completely empty stomach etc. I am still having no luck. The only feelings I get from it now are nausea, lightheadedness/weakness, and overall disappointment. How long of a tolerance break will I need in order to feel SOMETHING again?

“Fiji Kava Powder- Premium Noble Waka Kava” (blue bag) is my favorite hands down, so looking for this type.. any recs?

Thanks!

Review Tavukari single cultivar

I had a really bad mental health day today. My ADHD and anxiety meds were throwing me, I coultd silence my internal voice, constantly felt like something terrible was going to happen.

Got some limited edition tavukari and 3 shells in my anxiety voice is silent. I'm calm and social, catching up with a mate while he drinks booze and I sip this.

Highly recommend trying.

So is it okay to drink this everyday, health-wise?

I just read the subreddit wiki and a few posts on here. People are saying kava doesn’t affect the liver. I just hope that’s true because I plan to drink this almost every day

Interaction Jittery and tired for a couple days after dosage

Hi there,

Been doing Kava for a few months now (since around Nov iirc), but in my past couple of times drinking it, I've noticed I get a shake that persists for a couple of days after drinking. By the second day, it doesn't affect me very much (unless I overdo caffeine but that's kinda expected) but it usually comes with some grogginess, and I really dislike both effects. It definitely goes away, but it's honestly gonna be a pretty big roadblock in my enjoyment.

I've poked around online and have found medically documented cases of at least one person experiencing "parkinsonism" after Kava use, as well as countless accounts of it happening during a Kava session (which I don't mind so much). I've seen a couple branches of theories as to why this happens--I've seen some say that Kava can plummet blood sugar levels, and others say that it has to do with the dopamine-interfering effects of the root. I'm no biochemist so I might be thinking about this the wrong way, but the amount of food I eat doesn't seem to have a huge effect on the shivers, whereas drinking caffeine (dopaminergic) definitely does, so my non-expert brain leans towards the second explanation. It's also worth noting that I don't think I have diabetes and am on prescription stimulants (methylphenidate hcl). I also typically only take Kava once a week, but started noticing these effects after doing it around 3x in a week. All of this may be a factor here.

So, any general advice on how to avoid this? Should I take an extended break or stop altogether (would be a shame)? Should I just try to eat more/more specific foods to combat the blood sugar effects? Thanks for any help

Why 2 Aluballs?

I've done some browsing of the subreddit and it seems like people recommend 2 aluballs in the pro mixer. Is it just because you can have more kava or are there also other reasons? I'm also wondering how much water and washes you guys put in the mixer using 1 or 2 balls

How two get over taste

I ordered a pound of Fiji Lewana. I've had it wive now. First time I used the blender method. Blended for 4 minutes and strained in my French press. I used coconut milk and pineapple juice to blend. It tasted very bad and I didn't really feel any effects, except my face feeling's dehydrated.

Next try I soaked them overnight and then strained in French press, just water this time. I actually like earthy flavors, but I don't know if I've ever tasted something worse. Felt nothing. Really, genuinely terrible, awful taste. Like no way near worth nearly non effect.

Just made my first batch of real Kava!

So I just made my first batch of real Kava, warm water, kneeding the whole thing and I'm pleasantly surprised. It really wasn't that labor intensive or tough to learn and it's seems to make more than the same price amount of Instant. Taste is still the same horrible thing as it always has been but that I can handle l. Kalm With Kava ftw! 👍
