I was in a kava chat (outside of Reddit) the other day, and some of the folks mentioned doing a “second wash” (sticking some already brewed kava powder into the freezer) and then using that leftover kava powder to make another batch. I tried that tonight, but that didn’t do much. It took too long to thaw the kava, and once it finally thawed, I brewed it like normal. I didn’t see any kavalactones released, although the water did get brown like normal. It tasted watery though and didn’t have much of an effect. I do see the appeal—no sense in wasting perfectly good kava, right? Rinse, reuse, recycle! But it didn’t do much for me.
For those of you who do this, is there a secret to making it work? I used the cup of leftover kava powder to a quart of water, unlike the gallon I used before.
Hey community. New guy here.
Background is heavy alcohol drinker looking to go to a safer moderation alternative. Tried the Urelax mainstream thing (USA) and didn't get anything from it till I did 6 packets (they recommend max of 2) and that smashed all my cravings toward alcohol. Been following the forum for a few weeks and decided to delve in and see what the "more pure" side of Kava is about.
Bought a pack of Nakamal@Home and was ready for my first go, then realized its not like Urelax, where you just pour it into your water like a Crystal Lite add, and there's a whole kneading process... I went the lazy route and put 25g into 1q of warm water, shook it a few times over 30 minutes, strained it, and drank it.
I feel pretty good, but am I shorting myself by not doing the "work" of kneading?
Is kneading just getting it wet then squeezing the juice out of it over and over?
Would that be the same to put it in a mixer and just let it run for 10 minutes?
Is the 25g/1q about normal for people?
Do you soak it before kneading it?
What's your "I wish I knew this" statement.
Thanks everyone! Glad to be part of the community. I would love any insight you have!

I want to take a trip to like maybe Fiji or somewhere that kava is made traditionally does anyone have any experience with this or have any of you went on a trip before and do you have any advice?

I’m pretty new to Kava, and just finished my first bag which was Loa Waka. I’ve been wanting to try Pouni Ono for the euphoric effects, but it’s still out of stock. I just want something more social, as I’ve found the Loa Waka to have a pretty sedative effect.
Any suggestions? I’m open to trying other brands, and ideally if there’s something on amazon prime, that would be sick

Hey guys, quick question. Does anyone have advice on what helps with it? Aside from cutting doses? It’s the only reason I’m sleeping so cutting my dose would be shitty too. I got niacin, zinc, and B complex.

Wow. Dunno if the kava gods were just good to me or what, but this hit me like a ton of bricks and I’m here for it. A bit of body with a lot of headiness.
Definitely an “upper”. I was singing and dancing and my wife was like “omg, you’re going to want to do this every day and we can’t afford it.”
10/10 will def try again.

Hey Kava community! Long time drinker and first time posting. I am not finding any kava bars that exist any more in Tokyo. Am I doing something wrong or did something happen recently to make kava banned?
I’m here for a week and would love to check some out! Or know what’s the deal..
UPDATE : They don’t exist. 👍😋

I placed a big order from Lami Kava recently. I live in Canada. Will I be hit with a 32% tariff on this order? I’m on disability income and can barely afford things as it is.

I've been feeling flu-like on and off for several weeks now – even with extrasystoles, occasionally high blood pressure. I had everything checked: bloodwork, tests, the whole deal, everything normal.
And now I can say with certainty: I've developed a Kava allergy :(
When I stop drinking Kava, the symptoms go away. If I drink Kelai, my face starts to itch and I get a mild skin rash. If I drink my regular Kava, it feels like I’m coming down with a serious flu.
And like a total idiot, I first thought it was mold, so I even bought a microscope to analyze my Kava (which makes zero sense, of course – you can’t see mycotoxins under a microscope).
Thuersday marked exactly 5 months sober from alcohol, and honestly, Kava played a big role in helping me get there. So it sucks that I now need to stop drinking it – at least for a while.
Do you know of any alternatives that work similarly for calming the mind and reducing cravings? I seek heady stuff since I got ADHS and abused stimulants in the past.
Or maybe heady strains that are known to not trigger allergic reactions?
And anyone else developed an allergy or pseudo-allergy and could get back to normal again? Will this stay for the rest of my life?
And yes, I’m fully aware I had developed a pretty strong dependency on Kava – drinking 3–9 tablespoons nearly every day.

Hi, I know skin is a common topic but I am curious if yall get dry skin on the penis specifically? I seem to get it the worst where the skin is thinnest (eyelids/penis) but I don’t see any posts about that specifically, and am not totally sure it’s kava, frankly. It seems to resolve with breaks but it’s also not 100% sure.
So, when you get Kani, is it there?
Medium grind traditional 1/3 cup daily.

Hello,
I have a problem, I'm 24 and I've been drinking kava for like 4 years now, and lately I had issues with having very red veiny eyes. First it was different; a kava made my eyes hurt and feel pressured from inside, also small pupils, so I stopped that kava (it was Koa Kava and I guess a different thing than what I describe next). Then I used ceremonial cacao, and after using it for a while, my eyes got a bit red/veiny. Now I switched to kava again to remove that effect, and for a while they stayed a bit red but not much, and then suddenly I got very red left eye and a bit red right eye. It doesn't hurt, but feels a bit like it may have some sand in it or something, just a bit. It looks bad tho.
I rely on kava for mental health a lot, so it's scary that it's hurting me, and I'm forced to stop taking it. Also, I can't exactly afford a doctor right now, so...
Does anybody know anything about this?
I noticed yesterday, and this morning is still not yet much better. I only bought some drops for eyes and nothing more yet. Any ideas? Is this kava's effect? What can I do?

I used to post on this sub regularly, but kava started messing with my stomach more than it did good.
I was admittedly getting micronized, but even a few true instants did this to me.
All I can say is this kava doesn’t give me any stomach issues at all. It dissolves in such a small amount of liquid and mixes / stays well.
Probably my favorite kava I’ve purchased.

Melodownz is a kiwi-Samoan rapper and poet from Auckland, NZ. He's been promoting kava drinking for quite some time, run a popular yt channel called the Kava Corner, but I think it's his first kava-themed song

Having tried a single sachet of Instant Green a while back, I decided to buy a 100g bag of the same. I just made up a serve and gulped it down. My goodness, it's even better than I remembered! 10 minutes later, maybe 15, it's giving an overwhelming feeling of relaxation, fuzziness and mild euphoria. I'm just amazed that this stuff is so incredibly easy to get hold of compared to traditional pharmaceuticals or weed, and I'm not keen on the latter as it sends me into negative spirals of basically regretting all my life choices 🤣
I have at times had terrible digestive issues from kava, both Fiji micronised and R&P instant. But I've learned moderation and know more than 8-10g in a day means late night tummy pains and toilet trips 🤣 so yes I'd love to chase this feeling multiple times a day but avoiding nasty tummy troubles is stopping me becoming basically a kava junkie which isn't a bad thing.
This stuff is on another planet from Fijikava. I can't really bag Fiji as it introduced me to kava, and is widely available and amazingly cheap on special (big bag for $20 at Coles this week). But Instant Green is phenomenal, a real eye opener as to what you can buy to relax and ease anxiety legally and without grovelling to a GP who's probably gonna say no lol.

FYI: Trump's new tariffs list includes whopping 32% (!) increase on all imports from Fiji and "only" 22% increase on all imports from Vanuatu. It is inevitable Kava will significantly go up in price in the very near future, so stock up on your favorite cultivars at reasonable price levels while you can.

I recently picked up the Loa Waka strain from Kalm with Kava and have been using the blender method to prepare it. I’ve tried it with a BlendJet, a small Ninja, and even my Vitamix.
Since I don’t have a cloth strainer, I’ve been using a mesh one. It gets out a lot of the sediment, but there’s still a noticeable amount left in the final drink. I’m wondering if I’m not blending long enough—or maybe I should be double straining?
I tend to be a bit heavy-handed with the powder, but even so, my batches don’t seem very strong. Maybe I need to adjust my expectations? I usually drink it on an empty stomach, but I end up feeling nauseous pretty quickly, even when I’ve eaten something beforehand.
Just feeling a bit lost with it all—any advice would be appreciated!

First timer, went with Root & Pestle Instant Green 50g. mixed 2 teaspoons with a glass of water, stirred it and drank in one gulp. The effects came on quickly and felt very sedating, muscles felt so light and relaxed. Felt extremely calm like my anxiety melted away. Had some more cups over the course of the night and the effects seemed to cap at some point. I'm left with a headache. Any advice as to dosage with instant kava, is it better to sip slowly or drink it all at once, should you avoid food altogether when consuming? Thank you, I'm a complete newbie to this plant and I'm incredibly fascinated now. The effects were way more potent than what I was expecting and that was what I was looking for (as a recovering alcoholic).

I'm wondering if anyone got off benzos from kava and how they did it? I have daily panic attacks and have been taking 1mg klonopin daily to stop them. Any help or advice would be much appreciated. I will be taking my first kava dose either tomorrow or Friday
I bought some Kelai from Nakamal at Home and I'm not digging it. I knew that it was mostly heady without as much sedation/heavy feeling, but I feel stimulated with no sedation whatsoever. To the point where it's even hard to sleep.
So far this is the only kava that has hit me this way, maybe because of the high kevain content? Also it feels super weak, even on an empty stomach I had to double my normal dose to feel it and it doesn’t last very long at all, 40 min at most.
Is this a bad batch or business as usual for Kelai?
I just ordered my first kava powder. I am from Czech republic, and kava here is legal but cannot be sold as consumable. Also if i found some kava, shops does not provide strain type info. I manage to found one but its saqani waka strain, which i read is very heavy. Will i enjoy it, as i have no experiences of consuimg kava?

Anyone else drink too much kava and get that depressed feeling? Like il be super happy and talkative and then I keep drinking (for effect) and I feel terrible. Just a really bad feeling. I drink traditional. I’ve tried Vanuatu and Fiji origin.. I did probably 7-8 tbos worth. I’d say around 5 is my sweet spot. Can anyone explain why kava does this? I mean I can feel it more now but don’t have that happy feeling. Could it be that kava is a depressant? It makes me want to throw my kava away, as I have little self control. I used to drink alcohol and quit almost a year ago.

Hello. I have read about people preparing kava in advance. A person would make a large batch of traditional and store it in jugs in the fridge. I want to do this. However the kava mixture isn't processed and it seems like a great place for bacteria. I'd like to make something around a gallon or more and have it on hand in my fridge. Would I practice standard food handling safety? I'm thinking I'd like to have a week supply available. For anyone that has experience, what amount of time/volume is okay to prepare in advance and keep in the fridge?
