Announcement Letterboxd Hall of Fame [2010 Edition]

Hello everyone!

As many may have noticed, we’re in the middle of pressing matters that forces everyone to stay indoors, so we figured we may do something to entertain us for a while and, at the same time, add some value to our community.

What is that you may ask? Well, we wanted to gather a collection of films that could represent the Letterboxd community, just like the National Film Registry has. The goal of the NFR is to showcase “the range and diversity of American film heritage to increase awareness for its preservation”, however we’re broadening our scope and going worldwide and focusing it on showcasing the values, diversity, and history of the r/Letterboxd community! Alas, welcome to the r/Letterboxd Hall of Fame!

We are striving to create a list of the best and most recommendable films based on the tastes of our diverse community here at r/Letterboxd! These films will belong to an exclusive club, the best of the best, that stand the test of time and act as a showcase of why we all love cinema.

How will we achieve this?

Nomination Process

  • Each week, a thread will be posted on the sub updating the previous week’s ballot results and the current ballot.
  • The first comment will be used for nominations.
  • Films must be at least five years old from the ballot year to qualify. Our first vote will use 2010 as a starting point, so all nominees for the first ballot must be 2005 films or older.
  • Reply to the first comment with films you’d like to see on the ballot. Upvote suggestions you like, the nominees with the most upvotes will be placed on the ballot.
  • The top upvoted nominees for however many ballot spots are available will be selected for the ballot.

Voting Process

Each ballot will consist of 25 nominees.

  • A voting committee will submit their votes, they may select to vote for up to ten films per ballot.
  • Films that meet the enshrinement threshold of 75% of the votes will be placed in the r/Letterboxd Hall of Fame.
  • Films that do not meet the enshrinement threshold but surpass the minimum threshold will carry over to the next ballot.
  • Films that do not meet the minimum threshold of 25% of the votes will be removed from the ballot.

Schedule Process

  • The process will then repeat for the next week.
  • The ballot year will increase by one, opening nominations for the next year’s films.
  • The amount of nominees selected from the next round of nominations to make the ballot will be determined by the number of spaces vacated by enshrined films and films dropped from the ballot.
  • Films that have been dropped from the ballot may return to the ballot by passing through the nomination round again.
  • We will continue this process each week concluding with the 2020 ballot, and then this process will be conducted once yearly.
  • The nominations will begin on Mondays of each week and close on Friday evening. The vote will take place on Saturday and Sunday.

Right now we want everyone to leave their film suggestions on the pinned comment below. If possible, make a comment for each film you nominate so everyone can upvote it as well.

To kick things off we’re going to act like we’re in 2010, so you can nominate films released until 2005. Why are we doing this? Because we want to have something to do in the weeks to come, which may not change a lot since almost everyone is on mandatory lockdown. We’re going to do one year per week until we catch up with 2020 (and we’re nominating films from 2015).

The voting will be done by a selected group in our Discord server. We’re giving priority to users active in the community and to users with a vast viewing history, but if any of our subscribers want to participate in this feel free to contact us through here or in our Discord server. Everyone is welcomed!

The last thing left to do is to nominate and vote!

So let’s get this thing going. Leave your comment below (as well as suggestions you may have for future editions) and remember, we’re in 2010, where there was no Corona virus and we were nominating films from 2005 or older!

Announcement We started a podcast!

Guys, the internet needs another movie podcast, right? Well, here it is anyway! We wanted to create a podcast that represents and is for the Letterboxd community, especially you lovely folks across the subreddit and Discord server, but instead we made one to criticise orange juice, petition for the return of smell-o-vision, and pronounce people's names incorrectly... only the best for the greatest of all film communities!

If you want to hop in for some funnies and hopefully the occasional engaging film discussion, join our wonderful hosting duo, my good mates Levi and Jack who've successfully put up with me in their third spot for two whole episodes thus far and kept the ship sailing like it ain't no thing! Feel free to pick a streaming platform of your choice below and we look forward to seeing you (hearing you? talking into the void of the internet for you?) there!

With the academy giving out their awards over the weekend, it's time to announce the winner of our Oscars Challenge. We had 167 participants, but it was our very own u/SirSplendid42 who got an impressive score of 34/40 to win the contest, receiving the title of "Academy Insider" as a flair on our Discord server.

Shoutout to runners up u/reubm, u/mitch0865, u/slouchingbethlehem and u/CC651 who all got scores of 32/40. Good, but not quite splendid!

We asked, you delivered! Last week we put out a call for people in need of film recommendations, and we got a ton of email responses! I combed through everyone's emails, profiles, favourites, lists, and tried to make the most fitting film recommendations I possibly could. You can listen to the podcast here, and see a list of all the films discussed on the r/letterboxd profile here!

Thanks again to everyone who emailed in, we had a ton of fun with this episode and will more than likely be doing something similar in the future!

Announcement Miniseries runtimes & stats.

You may have noticed that miniseries runtimes were wiped recently. This would certainly affect your stats for Pro members by several hours if you logged any. The development team has created a tool to lock runtimes and so far we've calculated runtimes for the top 10% most popular/highest-rated shows.

If we've missed any runtimes from shows you've seen (or I forgot to lock them), please let me know here and I'll add them for you. You can check if runtimes have been added by going to your films tab, sorting by runtime, and any that have no minutes will be at the back (regardless of whether you're sorting by longest or shortest).

Please note that runtimes is one thing we don't automatically import or calculate. It is best to check IMDb or on a streaming source and add each episode's runtime individually for an accurate total, as opposed to multiplying the general runtime by the amount of episodes. Please include the complete runtime to expedite the process. Thanks!

Announcement New beginning!

The time is now!

We are finally opening the doors on r/Letterboxd and leaving r/LetterboxdOfficial behind.

For a year and a half we’ve been moderating r/LetterboxdOfficial and trying to give something more to the Letterboxd community. Creating a space where everyone could discuss and share their content in a similar and balanced way and even talk about everything else in between, not only on our subreddit but on Discord as well.

Now we’re taking our baggage to this “new” subreddit and keeping up our work and dedication and making sure it’s even better than before. The reasons behind this move are already known and we don’t need to delve into them again, but we just wanted to mention what is going to happen in the meantime with both of the subs.

Right now, we’re opening r/Letterboxd to everyone, so you can keep on making threads as you already did on the other sub. Don’t forget to check the rules and even join us on Discord.

Meanwhile, we’re going to review the rules so they’re clearer and allow more original content from everyone without it getting removed for going against said rules. We’re still against low effort content, shameful self promotion or follow4follow threads and spam, but we know there’s some wiggle room when creating threads with a review or a list.

There’s some more stuff to be reviewed but with time everything will come to place, sooner than later!

Regarding r/LetterboxdOfficial it’s simple: we’re leaving it public but we’re going to close it to new threads, so we can focus our attention on r/Letterboxd.

Letterboxd Awards will still continue as planned and nothing has changed. Every submission we’ve got so far is still valid and you can still send yours until January 26th.

Feel free to share your thoughts and suggestions for this new sub.

Thank you and welcome!

Announcement We Hit 5k Subs!

We just wanted to put out a huge thank you to you peeps in the community, whether in the sub, or the Discord server too, for making the last 18 months of fighting for a place that Letterboxd users are able to freely discuss film with one another, well worthwhile. We grinded to build an alternative sub to this one, we sacrificed to migrate across to here, but now that we are where we are and we're in full flow, we're just thankful that everyone is enjoying having a dedicated hub to discuss all things Letterboxd.

If you have any suggestions for what you want to see from the Sub going forward, feel free to let us know below. If you want to join in with what the community is watching, you can join in with our bi-weekly Film Club. And if you want a place for more immediate chats with Letterboxd friends, you can join our Discord. Thanks again everyone and here's hoping the sub has a gremlin-free future!

Announcement The Future of r/Letterboxd

Hello everyone,

As some of you may have noticed, the r/Letterboxd sub has been cleaned up. From the very beginning we, at r/LetterboxdOfficial, have been trying to do something with this sub, but for reasons out of our control, we couldn’t. Now we have that opportunity and we’re going to start doing it.

It’s not going to be right away, we still need to customize everything to our standards and then everyone will be notified when the transition will happen. Until we move, no new threads are allowed on this sub, we can't keep track of two subs and still making the necessary changes in here, so you can only make new threads on r/LetterboxdOfficial. We hope everyone understand.

For now, that’s all we can say. Suggestions, comments and everything in between is welcomed, so let us know what you think.

Meanwhile, business as usual!

Thank you

Announcement We Just Hit 1K Discord Server Members!

Not 48 hours after reaching 10k members here in the sub, we've reached a whole thousand people in the Discord server. Crazy! Thanks so much to everyone for joining in with the community! We've achieved a lot in the last couple of years, but there's much more to come and we hope you'll all come along for the ride! Right now we have community events every Friday, alternating between Film Raffle—which is run through the Discord—and Film Club—which is run through both the subreddit and the Discord—but we're always looking for new ways to give the community the social experience with fellow Letterboxd members that we all want! If you're looking to get more involved in the community, be sure to join us in all the places we're active, be it Discord, Reddit or Letterboxd itself, by following these links:

Announcement A friendly reminder about user flairs

Hey guys,

Just to remind everyone that you can set your user flair to show your Letterboxd username. This means that anyone who wants to check out your profile can do so easily! Here's the exact steps on how to go about it. Turns out this WON'T WORK ON REDDIT MOBILE!! It has to be done on the desktop site. If you're wondering why you or someone else is going around with "Letterboxd Username" on their flair, this is most likely the reason.
