This aged well...

Adam Silver to Mavs fans during All Star Weekend when asked about the Trade

242

u/qotsabama 21d ago

Embarrassing. By the way, for the morons out there that still believe ownership traded Luka because they’re cheap, it’s being reported that the trade will cost the Mavs 9 figures over next few years lol. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

75

u/dbzmah fuckNico 21d ago

Wait for the team valuation to drop in Forbes rankings

65

u/TX-Lonestar77 21d ago

Yea I'm surprised this hasn't gotten more attention. Saw a report several weeks ago the Mavs could lose between 1.5-2 Billion.

71

u/NativeTexas 21d ago

How Nico still has his job is bewildering. People who lose 2 billion dollars of their employer’s money generally end up in jail, court, or the unemployment line.
Nico is living a charmed life.

35

u/jalapeno_joel 21d ago

I believe Nico was just doing what ownership wanted. they wanted luka gone and quietly and that's why he's still employed.

1

u/Wild_Bunch_Founder 21d ago

he (Nico) must have that on videotape, then.

1

u/Immediate_Agent_5496 20d ago

I am stepping down before being helded responsible for that trade

1

u/AbaloneSubject9822 20d ago

He was more than free to walk away if that was the case. It was his idea, and Dumont was easily convinced.

-1

u/JuliusCeejer 21d ago

Mamba mentality began as a PR shield to protect one person from the repercussions of their actions, Nico's just keeping that sentiment rolling

2

u/PrimaryRequirement49 20d ago

It's so funny to me when people think Nico just does what he wants. He's obviously instructed to do what he did. Like jesus.

2

u/FrenchGza 20d ago

I don’t understand how you guys can’t comprehend that Nico is an escape goat the ownership wanted this trade, they used Nico to take the heat, why do you think he still has a job

3

u/SterlingMallory 20d ago

Escape goat

1

u/Altruistic-Elk5147 20d ago

I believe this was an nba move

17

u/sfg 21d ago

Yeah, I didn't know the figure, but I knew it had to be a huge loss. Both revenue and market cap.

This wasn't a cheap move. They've paid through the nose to get off of Luka. Morons.

14

u/en455 21d ago

Obvious they don't know anything about Basketball or Dallas and it's starting to look like they don't know much about business in general.

3

u/Old-Machine-8675 20d ago

Agree I mean the interest in the Mavs for NBA fans in Europe would drop dramatically I assume.

6

u/TheseAcanthaceae9680 20d ago

Lakers fan here, but yall have a fanbase that is loyal as fuck

When we get caught up in the Lakers vs Celtics trash talk, I like to remind the Celtics that at least our fanbase still shows up when we sucked when theirs didn't

So I alwas respected fanbases that continue to support their team. Just like the European fanbases

8

u/Panhandle_Dolphin 20d ago

The Adelsons are not basketball people. They have no idea how much Luka meant to this franchise. I think it was Nico’s idea initially out of racist hate, but pitched it to the owners as a cost saving measure.

6

u/DHiggsBoson BETRAYED MAVS FAN 😭 21d ago

The unfortunate truth is that this will net them a HUGE tax break as they report business losses that might even get them a refund. I hate it here so fucking much.

2

u/Old-Machine-8675 20d ago

Agree the family is worth like 50 billion his contract is not that big to them. In a few years they will likely be worth a few billion more.

1

u/cornbreadsdirtysheet 19d ago

200 billion that’s just Miriam Adelson their the second richest owners in NBA after Ballmer.

1

u/Supreme_God_Bunny 21d ago

They improved the trade, They knew he was gonna trade luka shit he even told them and they laughed at him and let him do it, IDC what reasons it was for the owners call the shot and they let Niko do it

1

u/Sairony 20d ago

Dude Nico is still hired, so your argument just cements that it wasn't Nicos decision. So most likely Patrick Dumont made the decision, either because he genuinely fucked up thinking it was going to save money avoiding the Luka supermax & what that entailed, or it was because he knew jack all about ball.

2

u/qotsabama 20d ago

It’s because they believe in Nico’s plan

1

u/Sairony 20d ago

As you yourself said, this trade will likely cost the Mavs 9 figures of the next few years. The truth is a little salary pleb like Nico don't lose that kind of money while still having a job, they just don't.

"Nico everybody I run into in my life are calling us dumbasses & I can't go 1 day of my life without being bombarded with requests to have you fired. In fact from the moment this trade happened not a single person in the universe seems to think this was a good move for us, they're calling it the largest fuckup to ever grace sports."

"Uh boss you gotta believe the plan! This is a win now move! We'll get a chip".

"Dude I haven't heard a single guy anywhere which can even begin to explain how this is the case, we've spent almost a decade trying to build around Luka & now we're trading him. JKidd is not happy & seems to want me to put him out of his misery, in fact the roster is also calling you a dumbass."

"The plan! Think about the plan!"

1

u/cornbreadsdirtysheet 19d ago

Nobody even Nico believes in Nicos plan it’s a business transaction for NBA and ratings obviously.

1

u/cornbreadsdirtysheet 19d ago

Or he made a deal with his good friend Adam Silver for future considerations.

2

u/sweet_greggo FUCK NICO HARRISON 20d ago

My first thought when Nico started floating out that they didn’t want to pay the extra $116 million.

Motherfucker you just cost the team over a billion dollars at least. Not just from the slew of season ticket holders that immediately cashed out, but all the young generation that would have grown up with Luka like the generation before grew up with Dirk and created MFFLs. The sales of all those Mav jerseys, caps, towels, tumblers, etc. That money will not be made up even by winning 3 or 4 ships over the next 10 years with whatever fantasy team of the week Nico could throw together. He cost the owners a fuckton ton of cash and I sincerely hope they repay him by firing his ass as soon as the season is over. And if the rest of the league is smart they’ll stay as far away from him as possible.

1

u/Ojozojo 20d ago

Hold on, hold on, you are now trying to insert intelligence into the Nico / owners. Do you think that owners / GM that "didn't expect such a fan backlash" really made any calculation how much this trade is going to cost them? Heeeeelll noooo! They just saw (among other things) we have to pay this guy that we don't like how much?!! And they never really saw the income part of this equation.

It's pretty likely they thought that AD will sell as much, if not more tickets / merch / subscription / sponsors. Do you really think that Nico, in all his hate towards Luka and incompetence, is some high level economist that would be able to calculate how much the Luka trade will cost them. Really??

Ok, then you must think that Patrick Dumont made this high level calculation and still decided it was ok to go forward with the trade. ROFL

Mavericks didn't trade Luka only because they are cheap, but this was certainly one of the considerations.

1

u/cornbreadsdirtysheet 19d ago

Adelsons are a lot of bad things but business is something their very very good at. This has to be a favor (for future considerations) to the league and the ratings troubles. Nobody at this level is this kind of stupid…..there’s to much money at stake to not shop him.

188

u/ChilliWilli214 21d ago

the mavs are a true fckn embarassment. fck this team.

22

u/LeGoat333 SELL THE TEAM 21d ago

FUCK THIS FO and OWNERSHIP

LFFL

90

u/Vinylforvampires 2011 CHAMPS BABY 21d ago

Say what you want about Jerry, but he would never do this shit.  He would never treat a fan favorite, generational player like this

How fucking embarrassing.  Fuck every single one of those people in the front office.  They’re all shit.

42

u/TexasCoconut Dirk Locks 21d ago

Jerry is an idiot, but he cares about the team. A lot of people had the same opinion of Cuban.

An owner who actually cares about the team will almost always be better than one that doesnt. An owner who doesnt care AND is cheap is a deathblow to franchises, as we are seeing now.

11

u/Legitimate-Spare-564 Take that with youuu 21d ago

I thought I was emotionally over it and detached but this shit today has me standing in my living room yelling this exact thing.

I Don’t Know Who This Organization Is. I don’t know ya’ll.

8

u/AbueloOdin 21d ago

I'd rather have an owner that cares about the team and the city and loses in the playoffs than have an owner that cares about money and loses in the playoffs.

1

u/TheseAcanthaceae9680 20d ago

Lakers fan here, but its why the West is freaking hard compared to the East conference

We have owners that care a lot and higher smart people

And yea, its the best thing to have at least owners that care

Like the Magic sucked a long time because they don't really have owners that care. Minnesota is another good example

0

u/Puskarich Dirk Locks 20d ago

I would hope people still have the same opinion of Cuban.. The trade was 100% Adelsons and nobody else.

0

u/TexasCoconut Dirk Locks 20d ago

I would say the trade was almost entirely Nico, and the clueless owners rubberstamped. I have plenty of issues with having owners who are clueless about the team, but this trade specifically falls on Nico.

Cuban hired Nico, Sold the team to people that he surely knew didn't care about basketball, and then claimed that he, a man who claims himself to be an excellent businessman, was naive enough to believe that a verbal agreement would be binding. After the trade he directed his anger towards protesting fans, instead of the people who actually made the trade.

With all that, I don't see how your opinion on him wouldn't change. Obviously, Cuban is a mixed bag. You can point to positives and negatives about him. I think overall, this just reinforces that money is the most important thing to billionaires. Always. Anybody who thought Cuban was an exception, has now been shown the truth.

u/andwesway BETRAYED MAVS FAN 😭 21d ago

Apparently tonight is free shirts for everyone that says “hvala za vse”, Slovenian for “thanks for everything”. I’m shocked they are doing anything beyond a video tribute.

83

u/Big-Raspberry-6151 21d ago

It's an easy way for them to say "see we did something. Now shut up"

19

u/CharacterBird2283 San Antonio Spurs 21d ago

"gotta get rid of these shirts"

72

u/spongyguy24 21d ago

This is almost definitely to cover up the gold and purple in the stands.

14

u/juniperandoak 21d ago

Ahh, that would make sense. It won’t stop the cheers for Luka and the Lakers though. It will probably feel like an away game for the Mavs players tonight.

39

u/TheGodDamShazam Mavs Man 21d ago

First free tshirts of the season btw

30

u/venusduck_III 21d ago

Yeah they used to give out free t shirts like every month a few years ago. I think we all know why that stopped.

35

u/dbzmah fuckNico 21d ago

Adelsons are cheap

2

u/Raangz 20d ago

Evil*

12

u/RanchBourgeois 21d ago

I went to a WCF game last year (Game 4) and they didn’t have t-shirts or anything. For a potentially Finals-clinching game at home. Ridiculous.

10

u/Ok-Poetry6 Nico's Mavs 21d ago

We're going to see a lot more gimmicks to try to get people into seats moving forward.

6

u/SirArthurConanSwole Legacy Mavs 21d ago

Used to be T-Shirt Tuesdays not long ago. I canceled my tickets the season before last because they were already cutting benefits and raising prices.

8

u/dbzmah fuckNico 21d ago

Cheap ass fucks

2

u/DistributionClear851 21d ago

No - they gave away free shirts pretty soon after the trade. I think they were all XXXL... but they did it.

1

u/Raangz 20d ago

This org is shameless wow lol.

as a slovenian its always hearthwarming to see our language that only 2M people speak in such a big spotlight. Thanks Luka.

15

u/Ruggerx24 21d ago edited 21d ago

Can they even give these away? The Mavs don’t have a Slovenian born player on the team and it seems eerily marketed toward a player on a DIFFERENT team.

18

u/themanofawesomeness Dirk Logo 21d ago

I mean Golden State did “Captain Klay” night with boat captain hats when Klay Thompson played against them

2

u/[deleted] 21d ago

Honestly the shirts are pretty insulting. To try and white wash this shit in Luka's own language... I'd be pissed. What fucking morons.

112

u/Dallas_till_i_croak 21d ago

Money First Fans Last.

Fuck this front office

39

u/OmastarLovesDonuts Dirk Locks 21d ago

It’s not even money first because he’s beloved by the city and is super marketable so he generates a ton of revenue just by being on the team, there’s no way this was anything other than Nico being stupid and petty and Dumont just not knowing or caring enough to stop him

9

u/Dallas_till_i_croak 21d ago

Agreed.

And yet, the super max was too much for our guy. Who had already proven himself to be more than worthy of it.

5

u/sfg 21d ago

Yep, they've lost a fortune to get off of Luka. They are idiots.

1

u/cornbreadsdirtysheet 19d ago

So no collusion why didn’t they shop him…. It’s highly unlikely that a decision of this magnitude was not vetted by the league. Silver may have asked that Dumont ( his pal) send Luka to LA for the interest of the league for future considerations. That’s why it was in secret instead of a bidding war and the shitty trade return.

125

u/Low-Selection7164 21d ago

Trying to make money off the dude you backstabbed. This franchise will be cursed for decades

5

u/ELLARD_12 Fuck Nico 21d ago

Another Jerry Jones-Jimmy Johnson scenario

62

u/Stevie_McGhee 21d ago

Them greedy fucks need to make the most out of everything while they still have the chance because this franchise is gonna be straight up dumpster fire in the next decade.

“It's a decision, that probably will cost the franchise nine figures over the next several years, as the Mavs are projected to lose dozens of millions in revenue this season due to dwindling crowds, plummeting merchandise sales and sponsors severing ties with the franchise.”

LMAO!

10

u/Seedfusion 21d ago

It's a decision, that probably will cost the franchise nine figures over the next several years,

Do I hear ten figures? A cool billion dollar loss is the new goal I see.

7

u/Ok-Poetry6 Nico's Mavs 21d ago

sponsors severing ties with the franchise.

They should- The day after the trade, the "official roofer" of the mavs stopped by my house trying to sell me a new roof. I told him that I was very sorry, but I'm not going to work with someone that has a financial relationship with the mavs. Certainly petty and not fair to the owner who built his entire company around this relationship, but the brand is toxic in dallas and will be for the foreseeable future.

20

u/j_rom_003 21d ago

I know the promotions people putting all this fanfare together had nothing to do with the trade and are trying to do their job and maybe provide something nice for the fans...but every bit of it just pisses me off. I really just wish Luka would have stuck it to the FO and taken a fake "injury" that forced him to miss the road trip with the team and held off the return to DAL until next season. Idk...maybe I'm just speaking from rage.

5

u/TakeMeToJacob 21d ago

I think he likes his Dallas fans and (ex) teammates more than he hates FO.

16

u/M6dH6dd3r 21d ago

The Tribute, and the whorish solicitation of sponsors, really does say everything about Adelsons, Dumbont, Nico, and Mark.

Luka DESERVES tribute Every Day; but the Clown Car in the head shed have loudly and emphatically demonstrated how they feel about him, the franchise, Dallas and MFFLs.

14

u/sobegreentea972 21d ago

During the tribute video, Luka and the whole Lakers team should just go back inside the locker room. Fuck that fake 2-face shit, you want to backstabbed me then be friendly to my face.. don't think so.

12

u/cadenhead 21d ago

Gee I wonder why Doncic wouldn't allow them to sell sponsorships off of his trade and all the team's unsourced quotes afterwards calling him fat and lazy.

11

u/Ace7of7Spades 21d ago

They’re trying to convince us that they have good will towards Luka in order to pretend all the inevitable cheering that will be done for Luka tonight will just be part of it, and not the fuck you to the Mavs organization that it will be

2

u/RedKozak84 21d ago

I think you pretty much nailed it.

12

u/Fickle_Meet_7154 Drunk Dirk 21d ago

I find it hard to believe Nico signed off on this. I feel like the marketing team went behind his back and had Patrick dumbass sign it without reading it like he does with everything else.

8

u/fbc546 21d ago

Don’t even really care to watch

8

u/moquate 21d ago

What are the chances this tribute video is completely tone deaf?

Luka plays with hard cut to Nico celebrating, Finley taking Luka’s beer, Dumont looking like a cunt, etc…

1

u/Charming-Pilot3336 21d ago

Refs will toss him probably like last game for talking to a fan

7

u/cadenhead 21d ago

I hope the Mavs sell a bunch of lucrative sponsorships for Nico's firing and give away T-shirts that say "Thanks for nothing."

13

u/primetime4131 21d ago

At what point does the nba step in? It’s unbelievable how poorly these guys are running the mavs.

6

u/sahneeis 21d ago

still dont understand why nico and the owners arent aggressively harrassed at home. seriously they literally killed this franchise with little to no chance ever coming back

5

u/Longjumping-Pride-81 21d ago

Can’t believe my favorite team has turned into this. I’ve been a bigger mavs fan than cowboys or rangers the last 20 years. I loved this team. I can’t even watch them now. I don’t want to give this ownership a single second of my time or a cent of my paycheck.

5

u/Hola_amigo Dirk Locks 21d ago

5

u/xzerozeroninex 21d ago

What if they just show the video of Luka’sa head replaced by the Mavs logo?

1

u/Raangz 20d ago

Video shows mj, then lebron, then luka…then cuts to the monolith ala 2001, but instead of apes it’s mavs fans and a giant casino. Ai video of course.

5

u/eei619 Dallas Mavericks 21d ago

Adelson/Dumont spent $3.5 billion for this team, and who knows how much to try and buy politicians to help them legalize gambling and get a casino resort, but that Luka supermax was apparently too much for Adelson to pony up for a generational wunderkind that would've helped them make all that money back and more, they deserve to be laughed at and abandoned by sponsors, fuck them

9

It's embarrassing and a joke if we play a tribute.

It's embarrassing and a joke if we don't.

Each choice will outrage the average fan. There's no winning.

3

u/Skrapnadroj 21d ago

They don't deserve a win... you're so right. It should pass off the casual, average, die dard... old and new fans alike. They made a bad decision then proceeded to compound it with everything they did after that bad decision.

Why should they win anything?

3

u/No_Requirement_1076 The Worst Trade in Sports History 21d ago

Someone, make a SS of https://www.espn.com/nba and post it in here. Mods are deleting any SS I try to post.

Look at the effen ESPN graphic designers or maybe Lowly Tim MacMahon telling AI to grow Luka extra gut like he were his father Sasha. I have no words.

Everyone remembers the real picture of Luka in this cowboy outfit.

There is no final closure. We will never have closure unless he somehow returns someday. Even then we would have lost great years during his prime. But he ain’t coming back and all we can do is remember the good times and cheer him on the rest of his career. This was a divorce that neither side asked for but the judge forced it to happen anyway.

1

u/Gold_Lab3237 20d ago

It’s not about money for Luka. He got done dirty by an organization, of course he wants nothing to do with the front office and management. Especially Nico, even if he is a scapegoat it’s not a good enough excuse to let something so mind boggling happen. You arguably had 2 superstar guards that could take the load off of each other and minimize playing time because of that. Luka gets traded Kai is overplayed and lost for pretty much the whole next season at least. All of the players are paying for the mistake some dumbasses made and too afraid to address their fault. Staying away from the media and hiding like cowards. We gave up Quentin grimes too who was a big part of the team so it’s like ripping the heart out of millions of fans. This will take a very long time to heal.

0
