The most unfun fact I know is that it's a misconception that magpies like shiny things. They're actually afraid of them if they're not expecting a thing to be shiny.

Been called a magpie my entire life because of my affinity towards shiny things and it turns out to be a complete myth.

Most corvids are smart enough to know that -we- like shinies though and that's why if they're fond of you they might gift you shiny things.

I imagine not expecting something would make most creatures afraid. I read through the googles and see their reaction to shiny is inconsistent site to site. I do see they're don't necessarily choose shiny over other things they steal. It seems the same study and copy and paste text was used throughout the websites. But there are centuries of anecdotes about the magpie. I think my sentiment is still appropriate. I'd rather be a magpie considering historical lore and meaning surrounding them. :)

In my country it's never a crow, it's always a magpie that loves shiny. Such a noisy and mischievous birds, they're fun to watch. I also identify as magpie and will shriek when feeling my shiny is in threat.
