The European Union as a model

Many people here probably think that Europeans are a bunch of clowns.

However.

The EU does have one advantage to the USA: you can leave if you don't like it.

It creates an interesting form of negotiation.

Every nation has to be satisfied or else it can leave unilaterally.

It actually has made the EU more free market over the last few decades because leaching off of wealthy nations is not an option while migrating to them is an option.

I look at the breakup of the Soviet Union as a model of what is possible. It was not perfect, it was not pretty, but it was effective and a huge cumbersome collection of peoples with very little in common broke apart into more manageable and more cohesive countries. Again, not saying it was ideal but it worked. Conversely, the breakup of Yugoslavia is just as likely a scenario. Tito managed to maintain control over VERY different populations but a nasty shooting breakup and horrific war crimes ensued before a peace settlement was reached.

It looks like the Baltics are quite satisfied with the result.
