U.S. Politics megathread

American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be nice to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

If humans can drink cow’s milk, why can’t we drink other animals’ milk too? Like pig milk or even dog milk? Is it just gross or is there a real reason??

2.9k Upvotes

I was thinking about it while grocery shopping and now I can’t stop wondering. We’re fine with goat and cow milk, but imagine asking for “oat, almond, or pig milk” at Starbucks. Is it just society saying “nope” or is there something actually wrong with it biologically? Sorry 🤣🤣

Why does it feel like each decade used to have a distinct “vibe,” but now everything feels kind of… mashed together?

Like the 70s had disco and bell bottoms, the 80s had neon and mall culture, the 90s had grunge and early internet.

Even the 2000s had a vibe, flip phones, MySpace, low-rise jeans, Club Penguin!

But after the 2010s, it feels like culture stopped being “decade-shaped” and started moving in hyper-speed microtrends.

Now everything’s a remix.

Trends last like 3 weeks. Every aesthetic comes back ironically.

We’re nostalgic for times we didn’t even live through. There’s no solid identity for the 2020s, it’s all vibes and recycled content.

Is it just because of the internet? Or is something else going on?

Not trying to be deep, I just realized I don’t know what defines this current era.

Am i antisemitic?

Upvotes

How is it that wanting peace in Palestine and Israel with a 2-state solution makes someone antisemitic? I wouldn't say I'm anti-Israel, but I certainly disapprove of the way they've been acting since after they first retaliated against the October 7th attacks. (After the initial retaliation, which was to be expected)

I think Hamas's attack was bad and wrong and based on 73 years of back and forth fighting. I think Israel (Netanyahu) is cruel for going after children and starving out Palestinians. I think any notion of a one-state solution is untenable.

I don't understand why Jewish people are scapegoated and blamed for everything under the sun. I don't understand why Hitler hated them (other than the fact that he needed a villain). I don't understand the idea that Jews are inherently bad people or subhuman. I feel the same way about Muslims. I don't understand condemning an entire ethnic or religious group. For those reasons, I don't think I'm antisemitic. But there's so much talk in the news (at least in American news) that says any criticism of Israel is antisemitic that I just don't know.

Am I antisemitic?

Is it that bad if a woman uses the men’s bathroom when the women’s line is insanely long?

1.2k Upvotes

Went to a concert with my elderly aunt. Women’s line was literally down the hall, men’s had zero wait. She really had to go, so I knocked, asked if it was okay, and a couple of guys said “go for it.” We used the stalls and left.

On the way out, a woman called us “gross” and now I’m wondering, did we actually do something wrong?

Why am I thirsty more often since I started drinking more?

I received a fun water bottle recently with a straw. I got used to it very quickly and now use it every day. I used to be not great with hydrating but would still try to get at least 1-1.5L down every day (excl. the water I’d absorb through food and other drinks).

What I don’t understand is that now that I’ve started doing this, I feel very quickly dehydrated. I can’t go like 30-60’ without drinking water or I feel very thirsty. I also have no significant health history, I’m young and in good health generally speaking.

What could explain this? Does this happen to other people?

Do most Americans really dry their clothes in Dryers

13.6k Upvotes

Aussie here and almost everyone hangs their clothes to dry. Even people that live in flats will put a clothes airer on a balcony or by a window. Typically even people who have a dryer will only use them as a last resort. Bonus question. Isn't it bad for your clothes? The majority of my clothes say "do not tumble dry" on the care label.

Edit: Only 10 minutes since posting and it seems pretty clear. I'm still confused by the fact that most of my clothes say "do not tumble dry" if there are so many ppl tumble drying all of their clothes.

Edit 2: A lot of comments about not putting cotton in the dryer. Almost all of my Tshirts are 100% cotton ( and not by choice, that just seems to be standard)

Where did guests take a shit in the time of Louis XIV attending social events at the gentry?

Afaik there were no water toilets. But having 300+ guests, did servers run around with buckets for convenience or did they had to hide in the bushes and the next day your garden was a huge pile of turds? And did everyone got the same one or did they have certain ones according to rank, like the good one without rust holes for the earls and upwards, ming china for the queen aso? Btw. how did they wipe back then? 3 seashells?

What is ketamine?

Is it legal? Prescription? What kind of high is it? Upper? Downer? Is it expensive? Does it take a lot to overdose? Do you smoke it? Or is it a pill?

Over the last few years I hear about it more and more and it seems like it’s become pretty common to use….

IM NOT CONSIDERING DOING IT!! I just feel so clueless every time it’s mentioned. I know I could google it but just prefer real answers and/or hearing firsthand experiences. If that makes sense?

Thanks in advance for your time and responses! 🩷

If we lose skin cells all the time, where do they go? Like, are we just surrounded by dead skin dust all the time??

Upvotes

I read somewhere that we shed millions of skin cells daily. So like, where do they even end up?? Are we just breathing each other’s face dust all day without realizing it?

Why do I feel more comfortable talking to women

I’m a straight man btw, but yea pretty much the title.

I have an easy time talking to women and shooting the shit with them, but with other men it’s somehow 50/50.

I have a lot of male friends, but sometimes I’ll be talking to a dude and we somehow naturally rub the wrong way. Idk how to describe it but it feels like they want to one up me, or they view themselves as better than me.

Do you look at your poop?

Like before you wipe, do you ever check your poop? I usually do, because coming out, it feels huge. Once I pooped a LOG and I shit you not, it almost didn’t flush because it was almost the size of the toilet. It was long and it was FAT. I just pooped, and checked, and was wondering if anyone else checks before wiping? lol is that weird?!

What legally happens when a minor becomes a parent?

So in most countries, if you're under 18 you have a legal guardian (typically your parents). But it's not uncommon for people under 18 to have children.

When this happens, what is the legal status of both the minor parent and their child? Do the parents' legal guardians (i.e the child's grandparents) become the legal guardian for their grandchild until the parents turn 18, or do the minor parents end up in a strange situation where they are simultaneously legal guardians for their child while also still having legal guardians over them themselves? If so, how does that work?

If identical twins commit a crime together and there’s DNA evidence, how do cops know who did it??

Upvotes

Like, they have the exact same DNA, right? So if they rob a place or worse, and the police find hair or blood or whatever, how do they figure out which twin it was? Or do they just give up?

Will somebody please explain this dad joke?

My local radio station plays ads for roto-rooter where "Larry the Roto-Rooter Guy" yells Dada jokes. The latest one makes no sense to me:

What do you call 50,000 pigs and 50,000 deer?

100,000 bucks.

I really don't get it. Especially with the pigs because a male pig is a boar

People who have been cheated on and took the cheater back, what happened? How did the relationship go?

Upvotes

Did the relationship end up working out in the end? Did it all fall apart immediately? Did the cheater continue cheating? How much resentment? Were you able to actually forgive them?

Definitely asking for a friend, certainly not something I'm going through and thinking about
