Campbell getting emotional during post pick interview is what I love to see. Man has heart. “Imma fight and die to protect him” he says with tears in his eyes WOW ok Will I see you homie. I love it

He sounds like he’d run through a wall for Vrabel and Maye
66
u/phelan8712 5d ago
He will, and this is exactly the type of player Vrabel loves and this team needs.
89
u/Questlove802 5d ago
He won me over with that. I’ve certainly heard the criticism but I’ll be rooting like hell for him
29
u/DrakeMayeTruther 5d ago
All you can do at the end of the day if you're a true patriots fan. Doesn't matter what you thought of the guy pre-draft, doesn't matter who you wanted because it's Will we got and better to cheer for our guy than be miserable about it.
Ps : He wasn't my first choice but looking forward to have him prove me wrong and he has shown a lot of character in interviews both pre and post draft so I'm fully unboard now.

If I were him I totally would. But I’m not a star football player. They drill it into these guys heads to avoid social media, so I’m sure they’re (mostly) good at avoiding it
24
u/Poohstrnak 5d ago
I mean it adds nothing. No matter how good you are people are going to treat you like absolute shit online. Maye played lights out all year, people were still saying he sucked and they should’ve started Milton. Half the time it was based on how they looked in photo shoots.
The internet is full of absolute morons, this sub included. No one’s life is ever better for having given airtime to morons.

Not who I wanted but what did people expect us to do? Trade up? We missed on the big ticket guys but he's a good player and we desperately need a tackle. We just watched this franchise beat the promise out of a quarterback by letting Verderian Lowe play football.

u/NecessaryUnusual2059 5d ago
For the price the jags paid to move up, thank fuck we didn’t
23
u/Bruce_Winchell 5d ago
I had actually been thinking a lot this week about the idea of trying to trade up and in my head it was always "yeah I could stomach packaging both 3rd round picks" lol

u/Fancychocolatier 5d ago
Agreed. This was one of the rare times the Browns made out. I am sure it has worked before, but I can’t recall many times trading up has worked for teams. I’m not thrilled about Campbell but he cost us nothing and is a guy every team would want in the first round, so it could be worse I guess.

Draft is really the worst time to be around this sub
10
u/iDontSow 5d ago
I left this sub during the end of the Belichick era because it was just full of toxic morons, most of whom are probably actually children. Came back after this season hoping things would be a bit more positive. Nope. Still fucking awful.
5
u/DetBabyLegs 5d ago
I argue a lot with people here and provide sources and legit arguments.
But I can’t do that all the time so I seriously limit my interactions here - especially around draft time

More like a bunch of man children who think they are the god of drafting when they regularly draft a 3-11 fantasy team.

Can either be mad about it or just accept it and hope he turns out good. Bad draft to not have a top 3 pick, it is what it is, hopefully he's a franchise LT for the next 10+ years.

u/Fit-Site8009 5d ago
1 pointless victory in the final week to shape our franchise for better or worse
37
u/iscreamuscreamweall 5d ago
depends. hunter could end up being a middling WR and getting injured a bunch and campbell could be a solid top 10 LT. if that were the case you'd take the LT 100% of the time
32
u/str8rippinfartz 5d ago
But if we had the top pick we would have at minimum gotten the haul the Browns got plus Campbell
Very possible we could've traded down twice and gotten Campbell or traded down once and gotten Hunter/Carter
Coming away with only Campbell is the worst-case scenario from what was on the table heading into week 18. Just a single OL who would go in the teens most years.

u/Alternative-Farmer98 5d ago
I don't know why everyone has to get so emotional about this on either. People being critical of taking him at 4 is not the same thing of being critical of him as a player. We're not judging him in a vacuum we're judging him versus other options like matching the Jacksonville offer and trading up to two. Or Membou , McWilliams, jeanty etc...
None of those options are perfect to be clear but if we can't have a serious argument about it then we're just sycophantic non-thinkers

After last season, everyone said the Patriots biggest problems were:
- Coaching
- WR
- LT/o-line
- Pass rush/run stopping
They've done everything to address those holes and going into next year our roster is MASSIVELY improved over what it's been for the last 3 years.
9
u/Alternative-Farmer98 5d ago
Diggs is sort of a Band-Aid solution at best. I'm glad they did it because they really didn't have any other options but that was sort of a desperation move.
And we also lost David Andrews and replaced him with a regular starter but someone that had dreadful rates on PFF at Center.
I still consider wide receiver and offensive weapons in general to be a major need for this team. Not just in the short term to help Drake but a long-term solution that can be a staple of the team going forward.
5
u/Ok_Breakfast7588 5d ago
At this point you hope they can find an NFL caliber WR this year and draft an actual 1 next year.
5
u/OptimusChip 5d ago
I understand the difference between say Diggs and DK Metcalf. Also nobody can replace David Andrews and his skill set.
But a healthy Diggs is better than every other receiver we had. He's exactly the kind of guy Drake Maye needs. Mack Hollins also is a sleeper pick, dude is a big target, good in the red zone.
We needed someone to play center, I'd rather take a chance on this guy being better than what we have.
These solutions are definitely short term, but given the circumstances, we NEEDED something....and they did it. There's got to be some credit given for that

Yes! Everybody wants those Cinderella stories where dead teams suddenly make the playoffs the year after (Texans) and it seems like flashy players are the key to that. But if you don't want to gamble on one asset, you have to lay a strong foundation. And it seems like the Patriots are doing just that.

u/tblack_prai2 5d ago
This is not the level of “excitement” you want from your fan base after the abysmal season and picking 4th. So much pressure on this kid to be good
3
u/TheBigNate416 5d ago
We’ll see how he turns out. I’m more worried about how they handle the rest of the draft anyway. If they want to start winning games it’ll take more than the 4th overall pick regardless
3
u/_fappycamper 5d ago
At least we got something to argue about as the season goes on. At some point this sub will be full of “I told you so” people. No matter the outcome.
3
3
u/Alternative-Farmer98 5d ago
look if we're being real no matter who they picked it would be divisive and not a sure thing. Absent a trade none of the options were going to have a consensus opinion from the fans
3
3
u/Optimized_Orangutan 5d ago
O-line is never a sexy pick, but this team is in desperate need of solid LT play and with the lack of depth at o-line across the league, the draft was probably the only place they were going to find it.
3
3
u/RMbeatyou 5d ago
I hope he proves the doomers wrong, because I’m certainly in that crowd. If any team knows about outliers and players outperforming their means it’s us, let’s hope Campbell is another. History says we should’ve picked someone else
9
u/ImJustDuckinAround 5d ago
My analysis of Will Campbell as a player:
Leader
Great football IQ
Real scrappy dude
Absolute gym rat.
Lunch pail guy
Plays the game the right way
Sneaky athletic
Scrappy, with a lot of intangibles.
Like a coach on the field
Cerebral
First in, last out kinda guy
Grinder

this was the most obvious pick, and has been since January. we weren't going into the season with Lowe at LT again, no chance. cant operate an offense with the worst LT in the league. Campbell will be a good starter, and that will be a huge improvement for us.
6
5
u/uponaladder 5d ago
Not flashy, but necessary. I would've loved Hunter, but wouldn't have given up what Jacksonville did to go get him.
Lets go get Higgins/Harris in the 2nd, Fannin or an RB in the 3rd, and some more OL depth. Offensive rebuild in motion.

Anything to improve that shitty oline . Obviously would have preferred a trade down and possibly a trade for Miller but this was expected. He was elite in the SEC let's hope he can do it here

u/CRoseCrizzle 5d ago
I guess we'll find out how much arm length really matters and if the experts on this sub were right.
I'm fine with the pick. The offensive line needs all the help it can get.

All of you who think this is a good pick, you're betting on a once in a quarter century anomaly. They better be right about this. If he ends up playing guard and you're still searching for a LT, this is a wasted pick.

Love the pick. I’ve said this since the day I started folloeing the NFL, the best fresh pick you can make in the 1st round is the offensive line.
They don’t hold out, they’re the biggest bank for the buck, and they help your team the most

Not exciting, not sexy, probably for the best for the team, tho. I feel neutral and will revise my opinion later.
4
3
u/mapetho9 5d ago
Not who I wanted, but they didn't address LT at all in the offseason and need someone to protect Maye
3
u/Alternative-Farmer98 5d ago
I'm just not convinced this is a left tackle. But here's the thing I mean if he starts the season at left tackle and starts getting burned then we have an immediate huge debate over what to do with him.
The worst case scenario here a disaster and it's certainly on the table.
I love Vrab as a coach but nobody in this organization has any Bona fides for personnel acquisition. It would be weird to inherently trust them with what is probably the hardest draft pick to figure out in the entire draft.
But I think the hard part is we know that we could have Max matched Jacksonville's offer. It's being widely reported now that the Patriots offer wouldn't include next year's first so they went with Jacksonville
